The Passive II

● Transitive verbs take direct objects : subject + verb + object

Transitive verb is a verb followed by an object

Only transitive verb can be used in the passive

A cake was made by Doris.

The homework was finished by Luc.

● Intransitive verbs have two characteristics

First, it is an action verb, expressing a doable activity like arrive,

go, lie, sneeze, sit, die, etc Second, unlike a transitive verb,

it will not have a direct object receiving the action

There is no by phrase when we do not know or

● Some participles like 'bored' or 'boring' can be used as adjectives.

These are used in a slightly different way from normal adjectives

We usually use the past participle '-ed' to talk

about how someone feels :

We usually use the present participle '-ing' to talk

about the person, thing, or situation which has caused the feeling :

Ex It was such a long, boring flight
