Trang 7CHAPTER 1:
CLASSIFICATION OF DATA, CODING AND DATA ENTRY
1.2 Types of scales
a) Nominal Scale
• Labels or tags for identifying and classifying
objects
• One-to-one correspondence between the numbers and the objects
• Numbers do not reflect the amount of the characteristic Nominal scale is only permitted to count
• Frequency Counts
Trang 8Example_1
• RECORD GENDER OF RESPONDENT
MALE (1)

• Think about your purchase of laundry
detergent Would you say that you…
Consistently purchase the same brand _(1) Don not consistently purchase the same brand _(2)
a) Nominal Scale
Trang 9a) Nominal Scale
Trang 10CHAPTER 1:
CLASSIFICATION OF DATA, CODING AND DATA ENTRY
1.2 Types of scales
• Whether an object has more or less of a characteristic than some other object
• Quality Ranking, Ranking of teams in a tournament, Socioeconomic class &
Occupational Status
• No mathematical computation such as addition
& Subtraction
• Frequency Counts

Trang 13CHAPTER 1:
CLASSIFICATION OF DATA, CODING AND DATA ENTRY
1.2 Types of scales
• Numerically equal distances on the scale represent equal values
• Comparison of the differences between objects
• Zero point is not fixed Both the zero & the units of measurement are arbitrary
• Any positive linear transformation preserve the properties of the scale Statistical techniques that may be used include all of those that can be applied
to nominal and ordinal data

this shampoo, the level of satisfaction you like?

Trang 15CHAPTER 1:
CLASSIFICATION OF DATA, CODING AND DATA ENTRY
1.2 Types of scales
• Possesses all the properties of the nominal, ordinal, and interval scales & an absolute zero point.
• Compute ratios of scale values
• y = bx, where b is a positive constant, are allowed All statistical techniques can be applied to ratio
data
Example: sales, costs, profit, height, weight
