The American family unit is the process of change In the first half of the 20th century, there were mainly two types of families: the extended and the nuclear An extended family includes mother, father children and some other relatives, living in the same house A nuclear family is composed of just parents and children living under the same roof

As the American economy had progressed from agricultural to industrial one, people were forced to move to different parts of the country to get good jobs These jobs were mainly in the large cities Now, in fact, three-quarters of Americans live in urban areas which occupy 2.5% of the national total

Trang 7

land mass Of the 118 million in the labor force, only 3 million still work on the farm

Since moving for better, jobs have often divided the extended family, the nuclear family becomes more popular At present, 55% of the families in the US are nuclear families But besides the two types of traditional family groupings, the family is now being expanded to include a variety of other living arrangements because of divorce There is an increase in single-parent families, in which a father or a mother live with one or more children Divorce has also led to blended families, which occur when previously married men and women marry again and combine the children from former marriage into a new family There are also some couples who do not want to have children to form two-person childless families

One day a student in grade 8 went home from school on foot On the street, he was stopped by a group

of four other students from his school These students were in grade 10 They were much stronger than him They started making fun of him They called him names They said he has four eyes because he was wearing glasses Then they began pushing him around Finally, they asked him for money When

he said he didn't have any, they beat him There was nobody on the street when this happened The

young student could not stick up for himself He couldn't protect himself.

This happens every day at schools all across the world It is called bullying and is a serious problem The victim, the person who is bullied, is usually a shy, quiet person He or she doesn't have many friends This is mostly because of his or her personality But it can also happen if the victim is new in

a school and looks different than other students For example, he might wear glasses, be fatter or dress funny Social scientists say that bullied victims suffer in silence They often feel ashamed or guilty about what has happened In most cases, they are also afraid of retaliation They are scared that the bullies will come back to hurt them if they say anything Bullied victims tend to withdraw from social life They become even more lonely and isolated They suffer from depression and stress Their grades drop because they do not like to go to school anymore In many cases, they get so sick they have to go to the hospital Often, bullied victims kill themselves

Therefore, it is very important to prevent bullying from happening The problem has to be stopped right away before it gets more serious Teachers and parents alike should look for signs of bullying all

Teenage years are filled with all kinds of problems-lack of self-confidence, nagging parents, peer pressure, doing well in the exams and getting into university Some of their problems result from the emotional and physical changes teenagers are going through

Teenagers are extremely concerned about their appearance So, it's no wonder they spend so much time in front of the mirror! They notice every single thing about themselves – their body changing shape, hair appearing in unlikely places, annoying spots breaking out Teenagers are rarely happy about these changes which can affect how they feel about themselves

Sometimes, parents hurt their teenage children's feelings by making jokes about their appearance They also tend to pay little attention to teenage worries and think of them as being silly Your daughter may be convinced that her nose looks awful and that plastic surgery is the only solution even though everybody else fails to notice the problem By trying to explain that other people do not normally pay as much attention to our physical features as we do ourselves, we can help teenagers feel better about themselves and become more confident

Teenagers also tend to avoid doing things they don't like, especially helping around the house They are likely to try to get out of doing household chores - and certainly don't respond well to orders The more you discuss the type of household chore your teenage son or a daughter might not mind doing, the better He or she, for example, may be happy to go to the supermarket, but hate the idea of washing dishes

It also works better if your children can, at least to some degree, do things in their own way and time This might seem annoying, but if all you do is order them around, you can be sure that next time they will not do a thing Always thank your children for their effort And if they do something that's more than just a simple chore – decorating, perhaps you might want to pay them

Questions

97 What are teenagers very concerned about?

………

Trang 9

98 Do teenagers enjoy doing household chores?

99 How can we help teenagers feel better and about themselves and become more confident?
