Trang 41 Introduction
The Internet is fast; computers are powerful
It makes sense, then, that live televised
entertainment has found a new home: PCmonitors Popular commercial services likeNetflix and Hulu are commanding a strong part
of the television market in an age when
watching TV no longer requires a TV I was aresident assistant at my college a few yearsago when they made the decision to cut cableservice There was no reason to keep itanymore - anyone who wanted to watch TVwas using the Internet It was the first salientrealization for a lot of people that Internetstreaming had become huge
However, since its rise in popularity,
streaming has also enabled anyone with acomputer to stream over the Internet Lots ofpeople have been using webcams to interactface-to-face via instant messaging servicesfor years Since higher bandwidth has
Trang 5become more common, many have founduses for personal streams over the Internet tothe public These livestreams can be
accessed by anyone from an Internet browserfrom any common computer
Livestreams have become immensely popular.Large events such as the yearly ElectronicEntertainment Expo have hundreds of
thousands of viewers Many outlets such asnews stations and music events have
livestreams available Best of all, livestreamsare free to watch
Livestreaming is also easy, fun, and free toget into I started using a Twitch.tv account tostream speedruns of various games abouteight months ago – if you’re interested, youcan find my stream at twitch.tv/tekkie55.Since finishing college it’s been a good way tokeep in touch with friends and to talk to otherpeople who are interested in the games Iplay
Trang 6But it’s not just amateurs like me: there aremany different kinds of streams from all levels
of production CBS, NBC, and PBS all runnews livestreams via Ustream.TV NASAhosts streams for its astronauts, which haseven included live video feed of a spacewalk
250 miles above the Earth Red Bull used 35cameras to broadcast Felix Baumgartner'srecord-setting space jump in October 2012.Big events like Bonnaroo, the yearly
Electronic Entertainment Expo, X Games, andthe Supercross World Championships all havelivestreams watched by up to hundreds ofthousands of viewers
However, even though many livestreams havebecome huge productions, many are stillsmall, home-grown projects created by
people all over the world For example, manydigital artists are now streaming their workover the Internet, showing off their techniquesand providing live advice to watchers
Musicians also use livestreams to show off
Trang 7their work – I recently tuned in to watch thetwo members of the group Younger Brotherworking on their new album, toying withsynthesizers and showing off their studio totheir fans Competitive gamers often
livestream events such as tournaments andpractice sessions both in online games likeStarcraft and League of Legends and foroffline games like Street Fighter and SuperSmash Bros Some organizations responsiblefor animal care have even set up public
webcams monitoring the animals they watchover These can be found on the websites oflocal zoos, adoption centers, and even fromcaretakers' homes
Anyone can begin a livestream with nothingmore than a computer with a webcam Usingfree software and an account on any popularservice, users can livestream from theircomputer whenever they like A computeralone can stream the user's desktop, which isgood for PC gaming and digital artists When
Trang 8you add the options of webcams,
microphones, and video capture cards, youhave the cheap and easy ability to create anykind of show you can think of Apps even existthat allow smartphone owners to stream tothe Internet directly from their phones (Youcan read more about these in “How To
Stream Live Video From Your Smartphone”and “Live Reporter: Live Stream From YourAndroid Phone”.)
This guide will go over how to set up yourown livestream for a creative project, gaming,
or anything else you can think of!
Trang 92 Livestream Websites - Which One Is Right For You?
So, you've decided to start a stream Beforeyou worry about the software and hardwarespecifics, you should first consider what type
of stream you'd like to broadcast and whichwebsite that broadcast would best fit with. There are four major sites used by casualstreamers for personal broadcasting Eachhas its advantages and its own target
audiences, so let’s go over them together
2.1 Livestream.com
Livestream has a variety of different
broadcasts that follow a format more similar
to regular television than most stream
websites Livestream's interface is basedaround the concept of live scheduled events.Unlike most other stream sites where the usergenerally begins and ends broadcasts
whenever they like, Livestream has an event
Trang 10scheduling system that broadcasters use toschedule events in advance and begin
streaming when the time comes The
interface is similar to Facebook's eventcreation Pictures, text, and videos can beadded to an event, as well as a live streamfeed
Livestream uses its own range of software, from professional-quality HD broadcastingsuites to simple but effective free desktop-based broadcasting software They alsoboast a strong customer support center Thissite is popular for its big-budget broadcastsfrom concert venues and news studios, butanyone can use the website for their ownstreams
Trang 132.2 Ustream.TV
Ustream has a large and popular set of
broadcasters that stream a diverse range ofshows The site uses a very straightforwardbrowser-based broadcasting method Flashaccesses a web cam input and an audio inputand broadcasting is enabled via a simplestart/stop button Chat and polls are
integrated into the interface as well
Descriptions can also be automatically posted
to Twitter and Facebook Their old
broadcaster is also available, which is apopout window with the same functionality but
a different interface
This website is easy to navigate and use, has
a good user base of all stream sizes, and hasmany features and functionalities Some usersmight also prefer the option to stream withoutdownloading any software
Trang 152.3 Justin.TV
Justin.TV is another all-purpose streamingsite Their "Explore" page, which lists theseven categories for their streams and somelive examples of each, is helpful for theexposure of smaller streams The site alsoimplements a standard search function, making it even easier to use Justin.TV's
Trang 16broadcasting is done via web-browser usingFlash, just like Ustream Their interface iseven simpler, with just a few options for thingslike choosing different cameras and
microphones and changing the stream bitrate.Justin.TV is arguably the easiest to start with, but also allows the use of other software formore advanced users
Trang 17streamers that are playing that game intoeasily-accessible categories This creates aspecific and easy-to-use directory that allowsviewers to find streamers who are playinggames they want to watch.
Unlike Ustream and Justin.TV, Twitch reliescompletely on separate broadcasting
software for streamers Two of these options,OBS and XSplit, will be gone over later in theguide
Ultimately, the major difference between thestreaming sites is in their interface Three ofthe four websites mentioned here are general,
Trang 18multi-category websites that cater to
livestreams of all sorts I recommend stickingwith the website you feel most comfortableusing, as they are all free…and all perfect foryour first broadcast
Trang 193.1 Getting Started
Registration for Justin.TV is fairly simple you'll require a username, password,
-birthday, and email address From your
account settings, you can add a profile picture
as well as change your email/password
“Channel options” has four subsections: info, chat, design, and members From Info, youcan change the channel title, description,
"about me", and category information Keep inmind that this is also where you'll find yourembed code and, importantly, your streamkey Chat has an access on/off check, an
Trang 20intro message, an area to list banned words, and a list of banned users The design section
is where you'll change the look of your
channel There are preset themes, differentcolors for different kinds of text, and theability to use custom backgrounds and
banners with some different options There'salso a preview pane to display how yourchannel looks with the set options Finally, themembers section allows a streamer to send astream key to an email address, allowingothers to stream content to your profile Bygoing through the design, info, and chat
sections, one can set up a new account tolook excellent in a short amount of time Ifyou're starting a new channel, I recommendgoing through the options before starting tobroadcast
Trang 21Note that the purchases and applicationssections are used for premium features anddevelopers, so they aren't necessary for theaverage user.
When you feel satisfied with how your channellooks, click the "BROADCAST NOW" buttonlocated at the top of Justin.TV's website.Don't worry; you don't start broadcastingimmediately after clicking that button Instead,
Trang 22it takes you to the page containing the
broadcast controls and options
The first thing you should see is Justin.TV'sflash-based stream broadcaster, which willhave a 'Welcome' message and a promptfrom Flash (If you don't have Flash installed, you can download it from Adobe's website.)The prompt is a security setting, ensuring thatwebsites don't try to access your camera ormicrophone without your permission Ofcourse, Justin.TV needs access allowed forbroadcasting to work, so click "Allow" whenyou're ready
Trang 23After allowing the site to access your
webcam, you should see its output in thestreaming window – in most cases, you'll seeyour face on the broadcaster! Before you doanything else, you should take a look at yoursettings, found in the lower right in the
streaming window (a gear icon) There aretwo sets of options: video and audio Checkyour Video options first
Trang 24What you'll see is a dropdown list and aslider The dropdown list will list all of thecameras available on your computer Forexample, if you had two webcams plugged in,you can switch between them from this list. There are also programs called "virtual
webcams" that can produce video from yourdesktop We'll go into these more later Fornow, just get familiar with the options
currently available for your computer
Trang 25The slider will change the speed at which yourcomputer will try to stream The lower end willupload at a slower speed, taking up lessbandwidth The ideal setting for this depends
Trang 26on how fast your Internet connection is Oneway to test this is to use a connection testingwebsite such as speedtest.net Simply run thetest and the website will give you a goodestimate for your upload and download
speeds You're uploading the stream, so yourupload speed is what matters in this case. The results will likely be in Mbps, or megabitsper second Remember that Justin.TV's slider
is in kbps, so the total range is from about 1
- 1 Mbps You can also use XSplit, a programwhich will be discussed later, to check yourbitrate
Once you finish with the video settings, take alook at the Audio settings (Close > Settings >
Trang 27Setup Audio) The two settings here are formicrophone selection and volume Microphoneselection is similar to camera selection Ifyour computer has two or more microphonesplugged in, you can choose which one youwant to use to play audio on the stream Forexample, if you plug in a headset but alsohave an external webcam with a built-in
microphone, you might play the video from thewebcam but play the sound from your
headset
Trang 28Input volume is very straightforward You canchange the slider to make sure the volumeplayed over the stream isn't too loud You'llwant the VU (Volume unit) meter to be quietwhen nothing is playing and never stay maxedout for long If the meter is always half-full,that might indicate a microphone problem.Once all of these settings are tinkered with toset your stream up as you like, you can exit
Trang 29the settings menus and click "Start" to start aquick countdown before your stream goeslive This alone is enough to get started
streaming!
3.2 Using a Virtual Webcam: ManyCam
There are many "virtual webcam" softwareapplications available, such as WebcamMax,Virtual Webcam, and Webcamstudio For thistutorial I will go over ManyCam, one popularapplication ManyCam can be downloaded forfree from manycam.com
Installing the application adds an output
labeled "ManyCam Virtual Webcam" to
Justin.TV and any website that uses Flash toaccess cameras (such as Tinychat) What isshown on this virtual webcam is determined
by the application (which, when active, isnormally in your System Icons, to the left ofthe date and time) Once installed, openManyCam, and navigate to the Video tab andthe Sources tab underneath This will list a
Trang 30few categories of items that ManyCam canstream, including actual webcams, yourdesktop, and images.
To start with, click Desktop There are threeoptions: entire desktop, area around cursor, and custom area Click "Capture entire
desktop" You should see your desktop in the
"Live Studio" preview window Now, go back
to Justin.TV, click "Broadcast Now", navigate
to Settings > Setup Video, and choose
"ManyCam Virtual Webcam" from the list Ifall goes well, you should see your computer'sentire desktop output to Justin.TV If you hit
"Start", you'll livestream everything on yourcomputer!
Trang 31There are many other possibilities with
ManyCam For example, click "Capturecustom desktop area" This will produce agray resizable rectangle Drag it and resize it
to any shape and place you like, and anythingwithin the rectangle becomes the area
streamed (Think of "Capture entire desktop"
as having a rectangle covering the entirescreen.) You can stream only a smallerportion of your desktop using this method As
an example, fitting the custom area around a
Trang 32windowed computer game allows you tostream only the game.
Trang 34You can also choose to stream your physicalwebcam through ManyCam This is useful due
to the features and effects you normallywouldn't have access to otherwise For
example, you can force the webcam output to
be a different resolution or frame rate It'llalso be worth taking a look at ManyCam'seffects, such as the ability to draw over anywebcam output This can be useful for
notation, or simply to doodle
Trang 35ManyCam also has an Audio tab with a list ofsources, effects, and settings This changesthe audio output with ManyCam's virtual
webcam You can choose actual webcamoutput here, but what if you want to streamthe audio playing through your computer overthe livestream? There's a quick way to do this
by enabling an audio feature called "StereoMix" Right click the Volume Control systemicon (small speaker icon next to the date/time)and click "Recording devices" Right click
Trang 36anywhere within the "Recording" tab andmake sure both "Show disabled devices" and
"Show disconnected devices" are checked Adevice called "Stereo Mix" should appear.Right click it and click "Enable" Exit andrestart ManyCam Stereo Mix should now beshown in the Audio options In addition, if yourefresh Justin.TV's broadcast page, StereoMix should show up in the "Setup Audio"dropdown list Choosing "ManyCam VirtualWebcam" as the video device and "StereoMix" as the audio device should enable you tostream anything from your desktop!
Trang 38Experiment with the different audio, video, and effects settings as you like to get familiarwith your options Once you feel comfortable
Trang 39it should make it that much easier to createthe sort of livestream you want Finally, notethat ManyCam does allow free users toremove the watermark from their output.Check Video > Effects > Text Over Video, and uncheck "Show Manycam Logo".
Trang 404 Using XSplit for
version While XSplit is a commercial
program, their free trial is indefinite and
comes with all of the features you need tostream The paid license currently starts at
$14.95 for 3 months There are additionalfeatures with the paid version you can
explore, but for now we'll focus on the freetrial version
4.1 Adding Content to Scenes
After creating an account (I also recommendenabling automatic login), you'll be taken to
