Trang 4Unless you’ve been under a rhetorical rock forthe past six years, you’ve probably heardabout LinkedIn Though it’s only one of manyfast growing social media sites out there, including Twitter, Facebook, and so on,
LinkedIn is the one you probably use theleast
That makes sense Many don’t realize howeffective LinkedIn can be as a source ofinformation, resources, or even future
opportunities Unlike other social media sites, which let you see reposts of Reddit from yourfriends or to get the latest and greatest
updates regarding how Mary-Ann checked in
at Starbucks, LinkedIn instead focuses onyour professional world, allowing you to build
a network of professionals and enjoy thecountless perks that can come with that.LinkedIn is a way for you to meet other
Trang 5professionals, build relationships, and perhapsfind yourself new opportunities in ways you’dnever expect If building a living, breathing, online demonstration of your expertise andinterests for potential clients and bosses alikesounds good, keep reading.
In this manual, we’ll show you how to setyourself up on LinkedIn, establish your
account, and develop your “living resume” in
an easy step by step process Those of youwho have no clue about LinkedIn or how itworks, fear not! We’ll go over must-know tipsand information to ensure you don’t make anymistakes For those of you a little seasoned inthe LinkedIniverse, feel free to read on: youwill learn some new tricks, or how to betterpersonalize or develop your living resume. Before we dive into LinkedIn, all of its
features, and the concept of a living resume, let’s first go back to basics, and start withunderstanding just what LinkedIn actually is
Trang 6What is LinkedIn?
Before we can walk, we must crawl Andbefore we crawl, we should probably havesome hands and feet to crawl with
Trang 7Just like tackling any other project you’veworked on before, it’s always best to have alittle background information Nothing fancy, like what color underwear the CEO wears, but some general background knowledge canhelp you understand what LinkedIn is exactly, who it is for, and perhaps even a little bit offun information for your next talk at the watercooler.
LinkedIn was founded in 2003 by Reid
Hoffman, an entrepreneur who made hisname as an executive at Paypal and as owner
of his own social media site, Socialnet, adating website Where Hoffman got the idea
of “Professional Networks” from dating sites
is beyond me, but the site had a quiet start in
2003, a good year before Facebook andthree years before Twitter
While LinkedIn started earlier than the otherpopular social media sites, its professionalatmosphere has, for a long time, scared off
Trang 8new visitors that the more casual Twitter andFacebook built their brands on Despite this, its niche control of a now fast growing market(in the wake of the recent recession) madeLinkedIn an important hub for executives andprofessionals alike, all seeking an edge in auncertain market.
Since 2008 LinkedIn has been booming, nowgrowing to the number 12 spot on the
analytics website Alexa, just behind Twitter at
#9, and not necessarily far from Facebook’s
#2 spot Considering LinkedIn generates over
$150 million a month in advertising revenue, the site has been fairly successful in recentyears
Since their IPO in 2011, LinkedIn marketsitself openly, focusing on new markets andmethods to attract customers to use theirclassified and networking services to findpotential employers or employees This isgood news: it makes the pond ever bigger,
Trang 9providing more potential for its users Whoknows what the next 6-12 months will bringfor LinkedIn, as it grows ever bigger andcaptures more of the web’s spotlight New,now-unknown features could grow the siteeven more, helping you in the process.
Trang 10With that in mind, let’s be aware of the
important stuff, like how we’re not talking
about a service like Facebook or Twitter.
Unlike your everyday social network, LinkedIn
is not about talking about your day with
friends and family or raging about how yourfavorite sitcom was canceled Instead,
LinkedIn is a network of professionals IfTwitter is a rowdy bar and Facebook is yourfavorite coffee shop, LinkedIn is your virtualoffice, a potential passageway to countless
Trang 11opportunities, and an area where everyoneyou could perhaps do business with is
watching
So, act professionally Though you may feelurges to vent, share random thoughts, or(even worse) get political — especially whenothers are doing it — stay strong and keepyour head up high You need to remembereveryone’s watching - bosses, co-workers,friends, and family In order to have an
effective LinkedIn account, you need to have
an effective network of people who can seeyour accomplishments, see what you’re made
of, and perhaps open doors of opportunity foryou to take advantage of It’s important tostay professional
Like I said, this isn’t Facebook or Twitter, full
of friends and family Instead, you have workers, CEOs, executives, managers,
co-directors, and more, all at your disposal, ready to see who you are — and you can
Trang 12reach out to all of them All could be
interested in you, and it’s not uncommon fortalent agents and other various recruiters to
be on the prowl on LinkedIn This guide willhelp you build your profile into somethingworth looking at, which could get you in
contact in future professionals interested inyou or your company
Along with that powerful ability to
communicate and socialize with professionals,LinkedIn offers a variety of resources, all ofwhich are yours to use:
• Ability to connect with co-workers, bosses, and other professional business people youare or have been in contact with
• Ability to reach out to friends, family, andfellow classmates / alumni whom can help youexpand your network
• Ability to reach out to potential clients,
recruiters, or other talent seekers using InMail
Trang 13• Connect, network, and build relationshipsprofessionally and safely
• Post your resume, reach out for potentialwork, and apply for jobs
• Be in the loop with the latest news andinformation on your relevant job field andmore
All of these resources and more are at yourfingertips, thanks to the tools LinkedIn offers. It’s up to you to exploit them, to understandthem, and to know where they can take you.All that’s left, of course, is one question:
Do you want In?
Trang 14What is a Living Resume?
“Living Resume” is, of course, the buzz word
of this manual, but it’s a true indicator of thefeatures that make LinkedIn so amazing
By Living Resume we mean the variety offeatures that make LinkedIn such an excellentsource of information, a source of powerfulresources, and a way to connect with
thousands As such, your LinkedIn profile
should serve as a living, changing,
concise version of you It should state what
you have to offer to your clients, co-workers,bosses, and more
It should not be just some lonely and
unmoving copy-pasted piece of static junk: itshould be alive It’s important to understandhow you must keep an active and accurateLinkedIn account in order to get the most out
of LinkedIn
Once again, remember that LinkedIn is not
Trang 15Facebook, and subsequently is aimed at an
entirely different sphere of people As such, its goals are different than Facebook For onething, LinkedIn is designed for you to connectwith professionals of all types, so you should
be taking advantage of this! Second, it iscatered to hold your information, your skills –even your resume – so lacking any of thisinformation is a big no-no But while we’redeciphering how LinkedIn works as a LivingResume, we should first explain why it is one:
1 LinkedIn is one of the largest websites onthe Internet, used by millions of professionals;remember that size matters when you want toexpose yourself to the market
2 LinkedIn is not only free for most of yourneeds: it offers extremely affordable
pathways to amazing opportunities Plus, thetransition into a “paid” service, such as InMailfor reaching out to recruiters, is seamless andcarefree: your information is already very
Trang 16available and accessible.
3 LinkedIn is catering to professionals of allshapes and sizes No matter your industry,LinkedIn has a crowd for it Even better,LinkedIn allows you to post all informationrelevant to your industry, and even form orjoin groups related to your industry Stay inthe loop with other professionals and seewhat you may be missing out on
4 LinkedIn allows you to post all your
professional data, such as titles, skills, and aresume This sends a silent but powerfulmessage to potential employers As opposed
to a corporate email or other job-search siteswhere you need to hide your intentions,LinkedIn throws them in plain sight Theservice will even entice you to post yourresume, removing any doubt from employersthat you’re looking for opportunities
5 LinkedIn is all about being social, but there
is a lot more here to explore and use
Trang 17All of these aspects combine to provide animmersive world you can dive into and exposeyour skills to others through Reach out andsocialize in the otherwise rigid and
conservative atmosphere of the workplace. However, there are legitimate concerns aboutLinkedIn’s offerings For example, a lot of theinformation you post on LinkedIn could bepersonal, and could be viewed by millions.Thankfully, LinkedIn offers you some privacy.Only paying users of LinkedIn can see themost detailed information about you, unlessthey are already connected to you You canalso see how many people, and in mostcases which people, searched for you onLinkedIn As a result, you always know howmany times your profile has been viewed, and, usually, who looked This adds a feeling
of security, but also a taste of curiosity —something that LinkedIn knows very well isaddictive Keep in mind this factor of
“curiosity” can develop as you view, or are
Trang 18viewed by, various potential connections onLinkedIn and beyond.
With all of this in mind, a reminder once morethat LinkedIn does NOT necessarily need to
be an “all-in” affair As with any relationshipyou may have, LinkedIn could arguably beone you don’t want to rush into, unless you’reready for all the attention you may potentiallyreceive Instead, it’s always safe and likelybest to test the waters before you dive in.After all, there are issues that can alwayscomplicate or develop as you work your wayinto the LinkedIniverse
Be aware that you are creating somethingpublic that will represent you for years tocome Something accessible to anyone inyour sphere of influence: clients, co-workers,and employers Start off with basic
information, along with a profile image Addmore information over time, while finding newconnections Most importantly: see where
Trang 19things go and don’t be afraid to explore! Aslong as you keep your profile clean and
concise it should represent you well and leavegood impressions
What’s both powerful and great about
LinkedIn is the strength of networking The
days of cold calling and leaving your resume
on the doorsteps of offices are long gone.Today, at the very least, you should declareyour intentions — alongside your resume andcover letter — with e-mails, phone calls, andother messages It’s not uncommon to hear ofapplicants to jobs, colleges, and opportunitiesalike reaching out to people “in charge”
through LinkedIn They get in the loop and get
to know the people making decisions
Like GI Joe said - knowing is half the battle. The other half is proving your worth, andLinkedIn makes that easier
Remember: LinkedIn can help you find
opportunities Keep this in mind, and prepare
Trang 20yourself to enter LinkedIn and create anaccount!
Trang 21LinkedIn 101 - Setting up your account
Now that we’re really getting started, it’simportant we know exactly what to do andhow, so let’s start from the very beginning.First: Visit http://www.LinkedIn.com usingyour web browser of choice
Second, take a look at the home screen. You’ll see it’s quite easy for you to jump right
in and get started: a registration page isalready open Let’s take advantage of this
opportunity, and enter our First Name, Last
Name, Email Address and Password.
Trang 22Use a different password than you use forother websites A secure password is long, includes special characters, and uses bothUPPERCASE and lowercase letters Use acombination you can remember for
convenience, but which is secure
Once you enter the initial registration page, you’ll be taken to a page to create your
“Professional Profile”, the real meat of your
application Here, enter your Nationality, ZIP
Code, Employment Status, Job Title, and Industry All of this information will become
the foundation of your profile, which is
important Your employment status and
Trang 23industry are optional choices in this part of theprocess.
After you click “Create my Profile”, you’ll bebrought to a page asking you to begin acontact search LinkedIn will search yourcontact database for people who already useLinkedIn It will return you a list of people youcan connect with, a great way to begin yoursearch This is optional, and don’t feel
obligated to add all those people so quickly. You can always return to the page later, andadd contacts from the various email accountsyou have If you choose to go forward, you’ll
Trang 24be given a list of contacts and you can
connect with whoever you want
DON’T mindlessly connect with people using
LinkedIn! You never know who may be onyour contact list and you want to keep
yourself as networked as possible, but youalso want to be mindful of the people youhave in your network It may be fun to add awhole bunch of people, but remember whatyou’re dealing with: your living resume!
Next, you’ll have to verify your account Youwill need to verify ownership of every emailaddress you add to LinkedIn: an email will be
Trang 25sent to your address Check your email forthis message and use it to verify This step ismandatory for security and helps you keepwould-be hackers from accessing your
account
DO allow time for the email to arrive!
Sometimes LinkedIn’s servers are busy, meaning the email could take up to 30
minutes to arrive If it doesn’t come after 30minutes or so, check that you’ve entered youremail address correctly, and that there are noproblems with your email setup
Trang 26After you enter your confirmation link, and log
in, you’ll likely see a bunch of offers fromLinkedIn These range from telling your
Twitter followers that you’ve joined LinkedIn
to offers of paid memberships to the ability toadd information such as job titles, education, skills and so on These are all aspects of thatLiving Resume, but once again are perfectlyoptional You’ll have the ability to just skipright through as you want to, so don’t hesitateto! We’ll of course have the ability to addinformation later
Once you are done adding the information youwant, click “Finish” Once you do, prepare toenter chaos
As you can see, you’re jumping right into thefray that is the LinkedIn homepage This is notwhat others see when visiting your profile, norare you looking at the profile of others
Instead, this page serves as a dashboardwhere you can catch up with your
Trang 27connections, news in your industry, LinkedIn’s
“Picks” of information you may want to know, available jobs, and (of course)
advertisements All of this can be a bit
overwhelming, so let’s break it down
Since we’re still very fresh on the street,LinkedIn is going to want to connect you with
as many contacts as possible As such, there
is a button here you can click to log into youremail accounts to gather contacts If you don’twant to use this function to add contacts, or itisn’t there, click the “Contacts” button on thetop navigation bar Here you can easily add orimport contacts from other email accounts, orwith email addresses you export from
software like Outlook This is important, asconnecting with people you know is central inthe LinkedInVerse
Trang 28Next you’ll see a very generic ‘person’ iconseated next to a blank blurb offering to give
an update This is how you can, as in
Facebook or Twitter, communicate withmembers of your network and share yourthoughts, updates, successes, and so on It’s
a great way to show your innovation,
Trang 29accomplishments, or general updates Keep
in mind, though, that the communicationsshould be balanced between personal andprofessional; we’ll get into greater detailabout that later
Below and to the right of this is content that isgenerated and devised by LinkedIn and itsalgorithms and as a result may not be
relevant or interesting Some of it is news ofyour industry (such as telecommunications,)news on LinkedIn, updates from the members
of your network, and so on This is all mixed
in with the LinkedIn Job Finder, and the tools
to the right of the main column, which includeJobs, Groups, and other content “You May
Be Interested In”
All of this breaks down into your daily board, and is a great way to see what you’remade of, but we aren’t exactly seeing whatothers see, so let’s take a look at what ourpublic profile might look like
Trang 30dash-As you can see, it’s rather bland We’re ing a whole bunch of information! Don’t beafraid to hunker down and transform your pro-file from a shy pond to a brewing sea ofexcitement On the right hand bar you’ll see a
miss-% bar standing idly by, a gauge of how
“complete” your profile is LinkedIn is not onlyencouraging you but helping you completeyour profile and build something worthy ofexposure
Trang 31Let’s take a moment to break down the profileand see what we can do to build up our
account Let’s add value, quality, and
integrity
Trang 33into this
Trang 34we’ve got a lot of work to do In fact, this is
so essential to having a proper “Living
Resume” that the entire next chapter is allabout getting you to 100% on the LinkedInscale of “profile completeness”
As you can probably see by the blank profilepage, filling in your LinkedIn page is easy.Over each of our empty spaces are options toclick and add content with It’s not
Trang 35complicated, so let’s follow along and slowlybut surely build an application worth showingoff.
The easiest – and perhaps most important –thing to add to your application is a photo
Why? Because a picture is worth a
thousand words As cliché as that sounds,
you’d be surprised what a deal-breaker (ormaker) a photo can be to people seeking tonetwork with, or (perhaps) hire, you
It should be a photo that is personal, yetproper It should feature only you – not others– and be a clearly identifiable photo thatshows you as a professional and a humanbeing (so, resist the urge to overuse
Photoshop) Photos from holidays,
graduation, or other such occasions maywork, but so do simple, clean, professionallydone photos
Remember to smile! It’s essential to gettingthe attention you want to your account As
