CENTRAL FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF

John Zamberlin (Head Coach, 1st Year)

John Zambertin, who played seven seasons in the NFL with the New

England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, begins his first season as Central

Washington University's head football coach this fall

Zamberlin, 41, replaces Jeff Zenisek, who resigned in January to rejoin

former CWU head coach Mike Dunbar, who was named the new head coach

at Northern Iowa

Zamberlin has nine years experience as a NCAA Division 1 assistant,

however, this is his first head coaching job at any level

For the past two seasons, he was the defensive

coordinator at the University of Richmond He also

previous coached at Eastern Washington University

(1992-94) and at the University of Massachusetts

(1987-90)

Last year Zambertin's defensive unit ranked 12th

nationally among NCAA Division 1 schools in total

de-fense

"We will play hard, tough disciplined football,"

Zamberlin, who will also coach CWU's inside

lineback-ers, said "My basic philosophy is to teach an

aggres-sive attacking style of football."

Prior to embarking upon a coaching career, Zamberlin played linebacker

for four seasons with New England (1979-82) and three seasons with

Kan-sas City (1983-85)

He is a 1979 graduate of Pacific Lutheran At PLU, he was a four-year

letterman in both football and baseball He was selected to the Associated

Press small-college All-American football team and was named a NAIA All

-American in 1978

During his collegiate career he had 184 unassisted tackles, 10

intercep-tions and six quarterback sacks Three times he was named all-conference

and all-district His number 56 is the only retired PLU football jersey

In baseball, he was a two-time all-conference outfielder

Zamberlin, who was inducted into PLU's Hall-of-Fame in 1996, was

se-lected in the fifth round of the 1979 NFL draft by New England

Coincidentally, Zambertin began his collegiate coaching career at Massa

-chusetts in 1987 when Dunbar left that school to return to CWU to take over

as head coach

"Mike recommended me for that job," said Zambertin, who played for

Dunbar when he was an assistant at PLU

Zambertin is a native of Tacoma He graduated from Wilson High School

in 1974 At Wilson, he earned four letters each in football and baseball He

earned honorable mention All-City honors in football and was a first team

selection in baseball

Misc: Born 2-13-56 at Tacoma Married Mary Ellen Wolf on June 28,

1997 Mary Ellen previously was an assistant trainer at the University of

Richmond Has two children by previous marriage (daughter Megan, 12,

and son Kyle, 8)

JOHN PICHA (Offensive Coordinator, 9th year)

John Picha, 31, begins his third season this fall as a full-time member of CWU's football coaching staff Picha is also CWU's head men's and women's track-and-field coach

Picha, who previously served as a graduate assistant or part-time coach for six seasons, coached the inside linebackers after joining the full-time staff in 1995 He was named the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach prior to the beginning of the 1996 season

Picha replaced Charles Chandler on the full-time staff

He also replaced Chandler as CWU's men's and women's track-and-field coach

Picha led CWU's men to the 1995 Pacific west Athletic Conference track-and-field title and a 17th place finish in the NAIA National meet and was selected the PNWAC Men's Coach-of-the-Year

North-Last spring both his men's and women's track squads placed second in the conference meet His men's squad also finished 23rd in the NAIA national meet

Picha previously served as an assistant field coach for three seasons, first during the 1990 and 1991 campaigns and then again in 1993 He was in charge of the throwing events

A 1984 graduate of Rogers High School in Puyallup, Picha is a former two-year letterman for the Wildcats He earned honorable mention all-league honors in 1987 and was the recipient of CWU's Best Blocker award in 1986 Picha played two seasons at Wenatchee Valley College before enrolling

at CWU, earning second team NWAACC honors during his sophomore son

At DeSales, Graham's teams compiled a won-loss record of 12-7, win

-ning the 1993 conference championship and advancing to the semifinals of

the Washington State Class B state playoffs

Graham also served as an assistant basketball and assistant

track-and-field coach at DeSales Prior to joining the DeSales staff, he was an

assis-tant coach for one year at Kent-Meridian High School in Kent

Graham is a 1992 graduate of CWU, earning a

bachelor of science degree in business education He

played two seasons for the Wildcats (1990 and 1991),

earning honorable mention all-conference defensive

back honors in his senior season Jn the 1991

sea-son, Graham intercepted three passes and also was

credited with 30 tackles

Prior to enrolling at CWU, he played two seasons

at Walla Walla CC where he earned first team

all-con-ference honors at defensive back

Graham is a 1987 graduate of Reardan High School

At Reardan, he earned four letters each in football,

basketball and track He was a three-time all-league linebacker and

two-time all-league quarterback and also was the team captain and Most Insp

i-rational award winner

BEAU BALDWIN (Quarterbacks, 4th Year) Beau Baldwin begins his fourth season as CWU's quarterback coach this fall It will be his second season as a full-time staff member

Prior to joining the coaching staff three years ago as a graduate assistant,

Baldwin played four seasons for the Wildcats, and ranks 14th in career passing despite the fact he was never a full-time starter

Baldwin, 25, completed 121 of 197 passes for 1,655 yards and eight touchdowns His 61.4 career passing percentage is a school record

He engineered two of the greatest comebacks in school history In 1991, he set school single-game marks for passing attempts (52), completions (32), yards (467), total plays (66) and total yards (550) in a

38-35 win over Simon Fraser His six-yard touchdown pass to Eric Boles with four seconds left gave Central the win

In 1992 he came off bench to lead CWU to the greatest fourth-quarter comeback in Columbia Football Association history He completed 21 of 33

p sses for 222 yards as the Wildcats scored 26 points in the period to overcome 28-3 deficit

Baldwin graduated from Curtis High School in 1990 where he earned three letters in football and three in baseball He Jed Curtis to the 1989 state football title

GRADUATE ASSISTANTS

Joining the four full-time members of CWU's coaching staff this fall are

nine graduate assistants, including seven former Wildcat players

Members of the staff include ex-Wildcats Ryan Fournier (wide receivers),

Mike Henry (assistant offensive line), Shawn John (running backs), Gary

Michael {defensive backs), Todd Murray (tight ends), Greg Stoller (kickers

and Shelby Zamberlin (assistant inside linebackers)

Also on the staff are Josh Fetter {defensive line) and Brian Strandley

(de-fensive tackles) Both Fetter and Strandley both played four seasons at the

University of Idaho

Fournier, Henry, Murray and Stoller were members of last year's Wildcat

squad

Fournier started at quarterback and passed for 1,940 yards and 20

touch-downs His yardage total ranks sixth in CWU history He had a season-best

373-yard performance against Southern Oregon and threw for 200 or more

yards six times

Henry played four seasons on the Wildcat offensive line, making a total of

seven starts Murray is CWU's all-time receiver at the tight end position,

catching a total of 76 passes for 960 yards and five touchdowns Three

times he earned all-conference honors, including twice first team honors

Stoller was the NAIA's national punting leader last fall, averaging 42.4

yards to earn NAIA Division 2 All-American first team honors

John played four seasons for CWU between 1990 and 1993, making a

total of 39 starts In 1993, he was voted CWU's Outstanding Blocker award

winner and earned first team Mt Rainier League and Little All-Northwest

honors

Michael played defensive back for four seasons for the Wildcats, prior to

joining the coaching staff last year He made 27 starts and was twice

selec-tion the team's Most Inspirational winner, including two years ago when the

Wildcats won the national title

Zamberlin, the nephew of CWU's head coach, played for the Wildcats in

Fetter played linebacker for the Vandals between 1991 and 1994

Strandley also played between 1991 and 1994 and had a total of 101 career

tackles from his tackle position, including 39 in his junior season when he

helped the Vandals advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division 1-AA

national playoffs

Central Washington University's sports sponsorship program is in its fifth

year A total of 20 businesses have pledged a total of $75,000 in cash and

services for the 1997-98 school year

Businesses receive exposure with signs and P.A announcements in

ad-dition to program and radio advertising Game sponsorships are also

avail-able

The program, which is under the director of athletic

Director Gary Frederick (pictured), is broken down

into four levels on investment Investment packages

begin at $10,000 and are also available at $5,000,
