Academic Stand JCornmittee/Faculty Senal.e Recomrnendation Regarding
Appeal Process for Transfer Students with a <2,0 GPA Date: October 27,2015
I have reviewed the Faculty Senate's recommendation and ral.ionale not to allow an appeal
process for transfer students with a cumulative GPA less than 2.00 Although I agree that a
transfer student who has not demonstrated the focus and/or ability to achieve a>2.00 GPA at
other institutions of higher eclucation is not likely to be successful at A&M-Texarkana,I believe
that exceptions may exist based on individual cilcurnstances and that a student should ha've the
right to be heard by an impartial group
My position on this matter is consistent with many of my colleagues across the state While in
Austin last week at the Texas Council of Chief Acadernic Officers (TCCAO) meeting, I
informally polled provosts/associate provosts frorn several other Texas public institutions; of
lrigher education, including Stephen F Austin University, University of I-Ious1.on at Clear Creek,
Texas Southern University, Texas Woman's University, and all other A&M System schools
except A&M College Station, A&M-Corpus Chlisti, and Tarleton All but Texas Southern
University reported having an appeal process for tlansfer students with less than a cumulative
2,00 GPA I have also discussed this mattel with the A&M-Texarkana coilese deans anrj thev
corlcur with offering an appeal plocess
Since the Academic Standards Committee has taken the position not to consider the appeal of a
transfer student with less than a cumulative 2.00 GPA, the deans and I will work with the
admissions and student success offices to develop an alternatjve appeal process that includes a
requiled improvement and intrusive advising plan in the event such an appeal is approvecl I
would welcome a faculty to join this group if the Faculty Senate chooses to make such an
appointment Just let me know before November |,2015.
Please convey my thanks to members of the Academic Standards Committee and Faculty Senate
for their time in considering this important matter,

RECOMMENDATION TO FACULTY SENATE
Appeal Process For Transfer Students With Less Than 2.0 GPA SUBCOMMITT'EE: Academic Standards Committee
RECOMMENDATION DATE: October L6th, Z0t!i
RECOMMENDATION:
Students who wish to transfer to Texas A&M University-Texarkana must have a
grade point avr3rage [GPA) of 2.0 or higher,
RATIONATE FOR RECOMMENDATION: This recommendation is baserl on the following:
1 Other system schools have the similar requirement
2 The A3C committee has considered and voted "NO" orl this issue
3 The university already has an alternative admjssion program that provides remedial services to freshmen students who do not mee:t the minimum admissiort
criteria Instituting a process that would allow students with less than 2.0 grade
point average 1-o be admitted may not be the 'best'thing for the university at this
time
