Dan was born and raised in Detroit and graduated from Wayne State Univ in December

1966 Having previously spent two summers in Quantico, VA with the USMC in their

Officers’ Candidate School, upon graduation, Dan was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant

and returned to Quantico for Leadership Training until June 1967

Deployed as an Infantry Officer to Vietnam, he arrived in country in late June 1967

There he was assigned a Rifle Platoon in the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd

Marine Division in Northern “I Corps” at the D.M.Z Immediately upon arrival, his Unit was

engaged in a fierce 10-day battle with the 324th Division of the North Vietnam Army This

first engagement of his newly deployed unit, called “Operation Buffalo”, included the

griz-zly first assignment of evacuating 85 recently killed brave Marines Their sacrifices, their

deaths, this memory first hand, cemented his dedication to the celebration we now call

“Memorial Day”

Having extended his tour, Dan spent a total of 19 months in Vietnam and received two Purple

Hearts, a Bronze Star award with Combat V, and two crosses of Gallantry He finished his

tour of duty at Camp LeJeune in NC, returning to Detroit to obtain his M.B.A with the plan to

pursue a career in Marketing Discipline

Dan has been married to Kitty Fay Telep for 48 years, has four children and enjoys 7 grandchildren In 1980, he moved his family to Sewickley, where he still now resides, to start Crossroads Development Group, a Marketing company that facilitates corporate growth through Market Research and Navigation Facilitation He is an adjunct professor at Geneva College in their M.B.A program

Dan’s passion has long been American History He has painstakingly built four postal history collections of envelopes and letters from the American Civil War, early Pittsburgh history, Sewickley history, and the Vietnam War With this last postal history collection of N.V.A./V.C military postal history, he recently received a National Grand Gold Award, in competition within the American Philatelic Association This collection will be sold in auction in Stockholm, Sweden, this June Dan is

a published author of 35 philatelic articles over his lifetime, two of which feature Sewickley Valley Postal operations in what originally was called “Sewickley Bottom”

Because of his love for American history and the military, today Dan honors those that died serving our country and de-serve the praise of this Memorial Day celebration

Keynote Speaker Dan Telep

When the United States flag becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be “retired” with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag We are gathered here to

"Tuskegee Airmen" refers to the men and women,

African-Americans and Caucasians, who were involved in the

so-called "Tuskegee Experience", the Army Air

Corps program to train African Americans to fly and

maintain combat aircraft The Tuskegee Airmen included

pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and

support staff, instructors, and all the personnel who

kept the planes in the air

After years of planning, researching, designing and fund-raising, construction on the long-awaited Tuskegee Memorial has been completed at Sewickley Cemetery It was a long road, one that began in the early '90s, when “a group of amateur historians from Sewickley, Pa., took the first step in

a long journey,” said Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Project founder and chairman, Regis Bobonis Sr., about the group from the Daniel B Matthews Historical Society that began research on the airmen Now, two decades later, they have in place the largest outdoor memorial in the country
