Where we started
_ ¬
In 1990 we started with a 1⁄2 ton truck with a cover over the box of the truck and
a lift gate We filled it with cardboard several times a day and empty It at our
storage area where a bailer was located In the afternoon the truck was filled
with cages to pick-up co-mingled containers, office paper and newspaper from

Trang 6Outdoor Equipment
From 1990 to 1995 we used In 1995 we started using
anything we could for outdoor Schaffer poly-carts with
recycling bins rubber wheels We have had
some of these on campus for over 17 years and they are still holding up well

Trang 7Equipment Changes
In 1995 we bought bigger trucks and looked at better ways to pick-
up recycling We replaced the 1⁄2 ton truck with a 16 ft cube van
and had a custom 16 yard-four compartment recycle truck made
that could lift the 95 gal recycle bins =

¢ Automation of the bailing process helped to improve the time spent bailing cardboard This is
a Marathon Gemini series horizontal bailer with a conveyor

Trang 9Equipment Changes
We lost our sorting and storage area in 2003 due to a snow storm that
collapsed the building In 2004 we bought a 26 yard automated side loader
to handle the single stream recycling pick-ups In 2009 we bought a 13 yard
rear load truck for cardboard These trucks improved our pick-up times and
could handle the increased quantities from single stream recycling

Trang 10Best Equipment
" Cardboard is one of the biggest
challenges, we have found that a rear
load truck works well for this application
With a hydraulic lift on the back of this
truck it can also be used to empty poly-
carts when the side-loader is down
= A side-loader works very well to empty
95- gal poly-carts We have found that we
can empty the cardboard bins with this
truck also when the rear load is down
=" A 16 to 20 ft cube van or stake-bed to
deliver/pick-up poly-carts for events or
office clean-outs works very well

¢ Shaffer Carts have been the
best investment for our 95 and
65 gallon carts
¢ Somat is the pulper that is
used at our dining halls We
have had no mechanical
problems with these
Trang 12Rubbermaid Slim Jims work well in copy rooms, mail rooms and
classrooms Rubbermaid 2956 - 28 qt bins work well for under the desk
recycling in offices Public Square recycle bins work well in hallways (we
don't use the tallest bins due to injury risk)
