Starr King School for the Ministry Advanced Thematic Preaching

Instructor: Rev Sofía Betancourt sbetancourt@sksm.edu January 19-23, 2016 DRAFT SYLLABUS

Course Description:

This is an advanced intensive in thematic preaching intended for students with preaching experience who seek to further develop their own unique preaching presence and voice Topics will focus on thematic development, use of poetic voice, effective sermon construction, pulpit presence, and preaching through the liturgical year This course utilizes a high level of peer collaboration and review All religious traditions welcome Advanced preparation of sermons and some advanced reading will be required

Prerequisites: an introductory level homiletics course or extensive preaching experience with permission of the instructor

To be done IN ADVANCE of the course:

• Read advance materials on the class Moodle site

• Submit two 20-minute sermons to the instructor, on subjects of your choosing, via email (sbetancourt@sksm.edu) in MS word or PDF format

no later than January 6 th , 2016

Please see the notes on sermon writing below well in advance of submission

Course Objectives:

Students are expected to:

• Deepen their working knowledge of non-lectionary thematic preaching in a

• Work on developing their own unique identity and voice as preachers

Requirements:

Students are required to:

• Complete all advanced course readings before the first day of class, and be prepared to participate in thoughtful discussion;

• Continue to edit sermons and prepare brief homilies during the intensive week;

• Bring a compassionate and constructive voice to peer review and feedback; and

• Attend for the entire week of the intensive

Sermon Writing and Delivery: Advanced texts due no later than January 6, 2016 Each student must submit manuscripts for one original sermon and one already preached sermon, on themes of your choosing, of 18-20 minutes in length Along

with each manuscript, students should include the full text of their readings and at least two hymns to complement the sermon

One sermon must be a new and original composition, not one that you have already preached or that you have written for another class

One sermon must be a newly edited version of one that you have already delivered outside of the classroom For this sermon, be sure to submit both the original and newly edited versions Identify an aspect of the sermon that you want to work on and improve

Sermons can be on any theme of your choosing You will have the opportunity to deliver both of your sermons to your classmates

Grading:

Grading for this course will be based on:

• Timely submission of assignments;

• Thoughtful class participation; and

• Your two sermons

Instructor:

The Rev Sofía Betancourt is currently completing a Ph.D in Religious Ethics and African American studies at Yale University Born and raised in New York City, she is

a graduate of Cornell University and Starr King School for the Ministry where she currently serves as an adjunct faculty member, and member of the board of trustees She has served Unitarian Universalist congregations in Stockton, CA; Norwich, CT; Storrs, CT; and Fresno, CA Her years of service to the UUA have included four years

on the national staff as Director of Racial and Ethnic Concerns; chairing the Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Committee; work as a member of the UU

Ministers Association Coaching Team, Board of the Church of the Larger Fellowship, Board of Starr King School for the Ministry, and Board of the UU Legislative

Ministries, California She has written multiple Beacon Press study guides and

Congregational Curricula
