Submission dates for supporting documents

There are two deadlines:

By 31 October 2012: Submit a mid-year 2012 transcript of results or final transcript if you already have this.

By 15 January 2013: Submit your final 2012 transcript if this was not available in October 2012.

We reserve the right to cancel any application if all the necessary certified hard copies or original transcripts are not submitted on time

Acceptance deposits: GSB programmes

If you are offered a place on one of the following Graduate School of Business programmes, we will ask you to pay an acceptancedeposit as reflected below Acceptance deposits are not payable for any other programme Acceptance deposits will be credited to yourstudent fee account, but will not be refunded at all

MBA (executive, full-time and modular programmes)

Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PDBA)

Applications for student housing

Applications for residential accommodation must be received by 30 September 2012 The application is part of the academic applicationprocess There is one exception - MBA applicants must apply direct to the Graduate School of Business for housing

UCT has a three-tier residence system that provides different levels of services, governance and management for junior and seniorstudents

• First-tier residences provide accommodation for undergraduate men and women students who are usually under the age

of 21 These residences provide students with up to three meals a day in a dining hall

• Second-tier catering residences provide accommodation for undergraduate students who are usually 21 years or older, for

those who are in their third year of study, and for postgraduate students

• Second-tier self-catering residences and flats are usually reserved for postgraduate students, or students who are over 21

or in their third year of study No food services are provided

• Third-tier residences provide self-catering accommodation for senior and postgraduate students

Only students applying for full-time study are considered for UCT accommodation

Application fees

The application fee must accompany your application:

Postgraduate applications from South Africa and SADC region R100

Postgraduate applications from outside of the SADC region R300

Master of Business Administration applications from South Africa and the SADC region R650

Master of Business Administration applications from outside of the SADC region US$150

• Application fees are not refundable Paying an application fee does not mean that your application will be successful

The International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) s role is to co-ordinate and facilitate internationally-related initiatives and activities

English language proficiency

The medium of instruction and examination at UCT is English You must have attained one of the following levels of proficiency in English:

For South African applicants:

• A pass equivalent to English (E symbol) at the South African Senior Certificate level The English requirement for admission

to the Faculty of Humanities is a D symbol; OR

• A pass equivalent to English at the South African National Senor Certificate level, either at Home Language or First Additional Language level

For international applicants for whom English is a foreign language:

• A pass in the TOEFL test (the Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a score of at least 570 on the paper-based TOEFL,

or 230 on the computer-based TOEFL test; or 88 on the Internet-based TOEFL test or an overall band score of 7.0 (with no

individual element of the test scoring below 6.0) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS);

• for applicants who are permanent residents in South Africa and for whom English is a second language: a score of Proficient for the Academic Literacy section of the National Benchmark Test (NBT) Academic and Quantitative Literacy Test (AQL) written nationally from May onwards or a pass in the TOEFL test with a score of at least 570; or an overall band score of 7.0 (with no individual element of the test scoring below 6.0) on the IELTS

(a) Valid passport

(b) A fee (current details are available from the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission)

(c) an official letter from UCT confirming provisional acceptance at the institution and the duration of the course

(d) in the case of a person under the age of 21 years

(i) the particulars of the person in the Republic who will act as that learner’s guardian and a confirmatory letter from

that intended guardian; and

(ii) proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or from the custodian parent, along with proof of sole

custody in the latter case

(e) a police clearance certificate

(f) medical and radiological reports

(g) documents relating to marital status if applicable

(h) a yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic area:(i) in the case of a foreign state accepting responsibility for the applicant in terms of a bilateral agreement, a written

undertaking in respect of the departure of the applicant

(j) proof of medical cover with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 1998 (Act No 131 of 1998), or other medical insurance cover recognised in the Republic (access www.medicalschemes.com for a list of medical schemes

recognised in South Africa)

(k) proof of sufficient financial means

(l) payment of a deposit: Provided that such deposit shall be refunded to the depositor after the final departure of the applicant

or after a permit contemplated in section 25 of the Act has been issued to the applicant: Provided further that the payment

of the deposit may be effected by means of a bank guaranteed cheque or credit card at places where such facility exists

(m) In the case of students from Africa, the payment of the deposit shall not be required: Provided that the Government of the

relevant African country submits a written undertaking to pay all costs relating to the deportation of the student, should this

become necessary

(n) Other requirements as may be prescribed by the Consulate/Embassy

We recommend that you contact the nearest South African Consulate/Embassy before sending in your visa application, in order to findout exactly what documents are needed, because requirements may change It is very important that your study visa is valid for studies

at the University of Cape Town If you have studied at another South African University or attended high school in South Africa, your studyvisa needs to be changed for studies at the University of Cape Town

International students residing within South Africa will not be able to register unless in possession of a valid study visa and proof ofmedical cover International students (Master s and Doctoral students) living outside South Africa during the academic year may beregistered by the University without having to apply for a study visa Such students need to obtain a suitable visa when visiting UCT andtheir supervisors, and on arrival in Cape Town must report to IAPO with details of their visa

International student fees

International students from outside the SADC region must pay the full international term fee before registration The International AcademicProgrammes Office (IAPO) will send you a fee invoice detailing the cost of your study for the duration of your stay If you are a studentfrom the SADC member countries*, you pay the local/South African fee All non-South African students who qualify for local fee ratesmust pay the minimum initial payment of academic and residence fees prior to registration

*The SADC countries are: Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique,Namibia, Swaziland, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Please note that the Registrar may cancel your registration at the end of the first term if you have failed to make these payments, orfailed to provide evidence acceptable to the University that a sponsor or bursary organisation will pay the fees for the year, by 15 May.This includes student housing fees if you are to stay in a UCT student residence

APPLY ONLINE FOR ADMISSION IN 2013

In order to apply online, you require:

1 a valid email address that is not used by any other applicant to UCT applying online, and

2 a South African identity number, (if you are South African, or permanent resident in South Africa); or

a passport number (if you are not South African) or a SA permanent resident)

In order to apply, please log on to http://applyonline.uct.ac.za

The application procedure

Register using a unique email address and password

You may save, retrieve or amend your application before you submit it

You will be asked to supply supporting documents such as transcripts or CVs and these must be uploaded as part of your online

application In addition, certified copies of your final transcripts or results must reach the Admissions Office by 15 January 2013

Once the application is submitted you cannot amend details of your application yourself You will need to contact the Admissions Office

in order to change application details

Within 48 hours after you submit your application online, we will send you an email which:

1 acknowledges your application, and provides your applicant number, which you must use in all future correspondence

with the University;

2 contains your unique log-in details needed to monitor your application through our self-service facility; and

3 contains further Instructions, which you need to follow carefully

COMPLETING A PAPER APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION IN 2013GENERAL

Submit only one application form If you have applied online you may not submit a paper form

Your paper application will be processed within 7 days of receipt We will post to you:

1 an acknowledgment letter which provides you with your applicant number, which you are to use in all future correspondence with the University;

2 your unique log-in details to allow you to monitor your application through our self-service facility;

3 a data sheet, which contains the details of your application;

In order to apply you will need the following documents:

- Form 1PG - the application form

- Form 4 - to be completed if a relative of yours attended UCT in the past; (this information is for the purposes of updating

the Alumni Office records only)

- Form 10a - the application for postgraduate funding for South African citizens and permanent residents;

(international applicants and refugees may not complete Form 10a, and may contact the Postgraduate Funding Office

direct for the separate application Form 10c)

Note:

• You may need to submit specified documents with your application form Please send copies and NOT originals Copies must

be certified by a Commissioner of Oaths any school principal, postmaster, police officer, advocate or attorney will certify

copies for you We will retain these copies Please note that we will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who submits forged documents

• We DO NOT accept faxed or scanned copies of Form 1PG or any other form

You need codes to complete Form 1PG See code tables on pages 11 - 29 The sections of Form 1PG are:

Section A: PERSONAL DETAILS

Complete all the fields in this section Omissions and inaccuracies will delay your application

All South African citizens and permanent residents must state their SA identity number

of this part of Section A is voluntary, and that any information you give will not prejudice your application for an academic place, but ifyour disability is such that you will require accommodations of any kind, we strongly advise disclosure Contact our Disability Servicewell in advance of applying to UCT, and if possible visit the University to assess the suitability of your programme, the academic departmentand the facilities available

Section E: TERTIARY EDUCATION DETAILS

Refer to table C If you have attended another University, University of Technology, Teachers Training College or College of Nursing youmust submit original transcripts or certified copies of your transcripts issued by the institution(s) concerned These transcripts must showcourses passed and failed, as well as courses taken but not completed.They should also include the grades and percentages obtained,qualifications completed, and a statement of conduct Please include a sworn translation of the documents if not in English or Afrikaans

If you are currently (2012) registered for higher education studies you must include a transcript which shows your results for previousyears (if any) and the courses for which you are currently registered By 31 October you must submit a transcript of any 2012 results

As soon as your 2012 final results become available, you must submit a transcript of these results, together with a certificate of conduct,

to the Admissions Office Please write your applicant number and choice of programme on the transcript This final transcipt must bereceived by 15 January 2013

If you are at, or have attended another higher education institution, and you do not indicate this on your application form, your applicationwill be rejected If we discover this after you register, we may cancel your registration immediately

Section F: APPLICATION FOR STUDENT HOUSING

Postgraduate applicants who wish to be considered for a place in student housing must select the self-catering residence option Pleaserefer to the website for further information about student accommodation UCT s student housing policy may be found at:

MBA applicants must apply to the Graduate School of Business for housing

Section G: POSTGRADUATE FUNDING APPLICATION

If you wish to be considered for funding, you must:

• complete and submit Form 10a if you are a South African citizen or permanent resident, with the required supporting documentationDIRECT to the Postgraduate Funding Office Closing date: 31 October 2012

• obtain and submit a Form 10C from the Postgraduate Funding if you are an international applicant or a refugee with the required supporting documentation DIRECT to the Postgraduate Funding Office Closing date: 31 October 2012

Section H: DECLARATION

You must sign the declaration UNSIGNED applications will not be considered

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REQUIRED FROM POSTGRADUATE APPLICANTS

In addition to your academic transcript/s, you may be required to submit additional documents and information along with your application.These documents are specified on pages 11 - 27 They must be uploaded with your online application, or, if you are not submitting anapplication online, submitted as part of your paper application The additional documents will usually include:

1 CV, indicating work experience (if any, give names(s) employer(s), period(s) of employment (e.g 2008-2012 and primary area

of responsibility)

2 Research outline, including motivation (or, for a coursework programme or motivation) of specified length

3 Referees names and contact details ( two referees wil be required)

Please ensure, when submitting these documents online, that each document is scanned and uploaded as a single document
