This course is intended to provide the emerging professional counselor a supervised counseling experience with the opportunity to practice individual, marriage, and family and group counseling This course will include both
individual and group supervision The 100-hour practicum includes 50 direct client hours; however, more hours may
be required of you to meet the clinic demands Direct client hours will match what comes in the Clinic At the
Practicum level you need experience across all developmental levels and with a variety of problems Through this experience you will most certainly see clients in your specialization and outside your specialization

Completion of hours in the clinic does not ensure the passing of Practicum 550 You must complete all
requirements satisfactorily and receive an Evaluation point average of 2.5 ( based on a 5 point likert scale) on your combined evaluations (mid-term and final)
Disclosure: Due to the high volume of clients you may be required to contribute more than the minimum
practicum hours to the clinic Be prepared to see additional clients if necessary Logs should be turned in monthly Also note, they are a legal document and any misrepresentation of hours may be grounds for dismissal from the program Any student who does not complete their hours or does not turn in their logs by the end of the semester will receive an incomplete for Practicum

Attendance and Participation: All students are expected to attend and participate in every class Graduate
education is highly collaborative and your attendance and participation is crucial to the learning environment You are also expected to attend all your clinic and supervision sessions prepared ahead of time and be on time All students are expected to attend and participate in every class This may not always be possible however if students miss more
than one class there will be a penalty of a ½ letter grade deduction per every absence after ONE and may result
in a Failure of the class
1 Liability Insurance: All students will submit proof of Liability Insurance to your supervisor and to the
Graduate Clinic Office
2 Supervision: You will have one hour of weekly supervision starting with week two The three hour
practicum class will at that point be for 1 1/2 hours, thus with weekly individual supervision this equals 3
hours of supervision Please give a copy of your insurance to the instructor and to the Office Objective

3 Logs: You need100 clock hours of practicum (Approximately 5 hours per week for 12 weeks) This includes
40 clock hours of direct service to clients, 10 hours of group and 2 1/2 hours per week of supervision Keep an accurate weekly log of activity, signed by university supervisor Objective 1
4 Journaling: All students are expected to journal each week concerning what they are learning about
themselves, their clients and the counseling relationship These journals are personal reflections about
significant learning and the application of that learning The journals are confidential and will be evaluated on the basis of insight in the above areas and application of these insights for future growth Journals should be
typed and turned in at the end of every month, see that your journals reflect your readings in Boylan, Norcross, Humble and Corey, Napier, Craig and Erk (Per specialty) You will be graded on those
inclusions as well This is Graduate School reading is a way of life now and in your future professional life I should not have to assign chapters
5 Practicum goals: Establish 2 goals in the following domains: Make the goals specific behavioral goals Create

7 Transcript of one Session: Transcribe one 10 to 15 minutes from a session then write about what you learned about your counseling from it
8 Case Presentations: Each student will make case presentations to the class These presentations will be
typed, double spaced and will include: a brief description of the client; presenting problem; etiology; diagnosis and a treatment plan (including short and long-term goals) with interventions (See forms) Use the two forms provided on Blackboard Objectives 1-11
9 Peer Evaluation: Every student will have an opportunity to view two sessions of another practicum student
and provide feedback to that student regarding their performance This feedback is designed to give each student an opportunity to give and receive feedback from another practicing student counselor A copy of these will be given to your Supervisor as well for grading You will be graded on the professional insight help and input you provide to your fellow students Please select another Practicum student and secure permission
to view a session (it helps if you agree to view each other) they will select the session they wish you to view and give them feedback on View the session do the session report (found on CIPPS) and turn it in when due I should receive 4, total 2 on you by someone else Indentified with an A and 2 that you did on someone

10 Clinic Recording: All students sessions will be recorded it is your responsibility to hit the record button
before session starts and after it ends (Make sure permission to record is signed first) These recording will also be used in group and individual supervision for teaching and evaluation of counseling skills and progress

Trang 611 Clinic Documentation: will also be evaluated by audit (Therefore, it is essential that client
documentation is current, accurate, and assessable in the clinic and the files brought to supervision)
Written evaluation will be given to each student at mid-term and the final supervision session Objectives 10
12 Group hours: Students will at minimum participate in 10 group hours preferably co-lead or lead the group,
please ok your group assignment with your supervisor by 3 rd week of practicum Objective 1
13 Midterm and Final Evaluation: You will be given a midterm and final evaluation in supervision at stated
times in outline given in syllabus Objectives 1-11
14 Portfolio: At the end of the semester turn into the professor a portfolio folder containing the following in the
order listed

2 Final Hour log summary sheet
3 Monthly hour logs (copies)
4 Copies of Evaluations (Practicum supervisor) Mid-Term, Final
5 Practicum goals with a Beginning and Final evaluation of your progress

Important Reminders: (These will having bearing on your Evaluations)
Clinic Manual: The student is expected to read the Practicum section of the Clinic Manual and have a thorough
knowledge of all requirements related to successful completion of practicum
Confidentiality: Students must maintain confidentiality of all case discussions The discussion of cases outside of the
group setting with persons other than those in the counseling program, the client, the instructor or your supervisor are violations and are grounds for being dismissed from the class with a failing grade Please use caution in this area you are responsible no excuses will be accepted Nothing is to be taken out of the clinic under any circumstances for any reason
Demonstration: Begin a Mastery of the individual and family counseling skills involved in (a) Responding to
individual clients, couples or family, (b) Integrative understanding of individual clients, couples and family system dynamics, (c) Skillfully listening to individual clients, couples or families (d) Facilitating action on the part of the

personal maturity Demonstrating professionalism in the classroom and the Clinic is expected of you as well as being
present and engaged in the classroom and the Clinic You are practicing under the professors license act

Course Accommodations: If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, please make an

Student Honesty/Cheating
Students are expected to exhibit honesty in the classroom, in homework, in papers submitted to the instructor, and in quizzes or tests Each instructor should define what constitutes honest work in a specific course Any deviation from ordinary standards such as the permitted use of notes for an examination or an "open book" test should be stated clearly by the instructor
Cheating is defined as submitting work for academic evaluation that is not the student's own, copying answers from another student during an examination, using prepared notes or materials during an examination, or other
misrepresentations of academic achievement submitted for evaluation or a grade
Plagiarism in research writing is considered cheating
• Plagiarism is defined by the MLA Handbook as "the act of using another person's ideas or expressions in writing without acknowledging the source to repeat as your own someone else's sentences, more or less verbatim."
• The Prentice Hall Reference Guide (2006) indicates, "To plagiarize is to include someone else's writing,
information, or idea in a paper and fail to acknowledge what you took by indicating whose work it is" (p 292)
Students are expected to submit only their own original work They are expected to give credit when borrowing, quoting, or paraphrasing, using appropriate citations An undergraduate student apprehended and charged with
cheating, including plagiarism, during his or her college matriculation, shall receive the following discipline:
1 First incident of cheating failure in paper, assignment, or exam;
2 Second incident of cheating failure in the course involved;
3 Third incident of cheating dismissal from the university
A graduate student is expected to understand clearly the nature of cheating and is subject to dismissal from the
university for a single incident of academic dishonesty or cheating Incidents of cheating and/or plagiarism will be investigated and judged by the appropriate graduate faculty
