Chairman Coetus 23 was prof P M Gy84, and secretary S Mazzarello The members were also C Braga, A Chavasse, J Ch Didier, A Knauber,

R Masi and many others who contributed to the Ordo Unctionis

infirmo-rum At the first meeting of which was held from 15 to 17 September 1964,

the participants adopted a working document85 that essentially paved the way for further proceedings After conducting research and discussions, the document was adopted.86 It was decided, however, that the revision of

existing structures rites would take a special subcommittee, which origi-nated from Group of 23 – Subcommiso de ritibus infirmorum et defunctorum

The reason for this was that Group 23 had too much work to perform as, in addition to the Anointing of the Sick, it also had to deal with religious pro-fession, the liturgy for the dead, processions, blessings and litanies

At the working meeting in December of the same year a basic rite of the Sacrament of the Sick was proposed Also suggested was the aboli-tion of certain prayers and outstretched hand gesture in the direction of

the patient; limit the number of anointings; and a sacramental reformu-lation A new rite of Viaticum was proposed de commendatinis animae

The suggestion of the possibility of celebrating Mass in the bedroom of the sick by any priest, and the possibility of receiving Holy Communion under the species of wine, only if the health of the patient allowed were suggested.87 Basically, however, the development of new structures took place in 1965 – 69 The most important meeting of the Subcommittee included sessions on: 22 April 1965 Mainz; 18 – 19 May 1965 Rome; 27 – 30 December 1967 in the monastery of Le Saulchoir near Paris; April

22, 1968, again in Rome; July 19, 1969, in Duvres la Delavrande in Nor-mandy and the last on September 14, 1969 in Luxembourg The specific

stages of achievements of the new Ordo passed in the form of the Con-silium known as Relatio and it is these that charted the further course of

research and editorial work

In subsequent years, the entire works devoted to the reform of the rite

of the sick were divided into four main chapters:

1 De visitatione et communione infirmorum

84 Prof P M Gy Lecturer, Liturgical Institute in Paris.

85 The document sets out the path of renewal throughout the Roman Ritual It was

prepared by the two working groups Coetus 22 and 23 The Sacrament of the sick

is dedicated to art from 42 to 48 These articles do not go substantially beyond the general doctrine of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

86 Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick was devoted to art 33 to 37 see in J STEFAŃSKI,
