DESIGN OR MEDIA? ARTS UNIVERSITY BOURNEMOUTH IS HOSTING A FREE AND UNIQUE FOUR-DAY SPECIALIST SUMMER SCHOOL FOR THOSE IN

YEAR 12.

THE EVENT AIMS TO ENCOURAGE

THOSE STUDENTS WHO CAN BENEFIT MOST FROM WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER, WHATEVER THEIR BACKGROUND,

TO APPLY TO THE CREATIVE ARTS AT HIGHER EDUCATION.

OUR YEAR 12 SPECIALIST SUMMER SCHOOL IS DIVIDED INTO DIFFERENT SUBJECT AREAS, GIVING YOU THE OPTION OF FOCUSING ON ONE MAIN DISCIPLINE.

FASHION BRANDING AND COMMUNICATION FINE ART

MODELMAKING

WHAT?

This four-day activity is designed to give you a taster of studying

your chosen subject at further or higher education These sessions

will allow you to develop specialist learning, team building,

problem-solving and communication skills

WHEN?

This activity will take place on 01, 02, and 03 July 09.30 - 15.30 and

04 July 11.30 - 17.30 Please note that you will need to commit for the

whole four-day duration, enabling sufficient time to complete your

project There will be a break on campus where lunch will be provided

WHERE?

Year 12 Specialist Summer School takes place on our campus located

in Wallisdown on the border between Bournemouth and Poole The

campus offers a series of modern, purpose-built studios, workrooms

and teaching areas The workshops and studios are well equipped to

the latest in industry standards and the University offers an enviable

provision of specialist computer equipment Public transport to and

from Year 12 Specialist Summer school will be reimbursed where the

receipt or travel ticket is provided as evidence of the journey

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF GETTING A PLACE ON THE YEAR 12 SUMMER SCHOOL?

The University is committed to offering places to applicants who have the potential to succeed in Higher Education but face personal

or institutional barriers Places are limited so please be aware that applying for Year 12 Specialist Summer School does not guarantee anyone a place Where possible, we try to allocate places for those who have a creative passion You will also be told if you are on the reserve list and we will contact you if a place becomes available

It is unfortunately not always possible to allocate first choice of course WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU HAVE APPLIED?

Once all applications have been received, we will let you know whether you have a place or not via your school or college

YEAR 12 SPECIALIST SUMMER SCHOOL COURSES

ART AND DESIGN HISTORY

This course offers you a unique opportunity to learn about how art and design can unlock the past and help us understand what the future may hold You will explore the connections between art & design and society and the wider world by thinking rigorously and critically about not only objects themselves, but the ideas that underpin objects, whether they’re paintings, sculptures, film or everyday products

DRAWING

This course will be an opportunity to develop and practise skills related to drawing Working in our drawing studios and using our workshops and facilities, you will explore a range of approaches

to drawing including printmaking and 3D as well as core drawing skills using traditional media You will be encouraged to experiment and incorporate different techniques to build a body of drawing evidence that will be a valuable addition to your creative portfolio

FASHION BRANDING AND COMMUNICATION

This workshop has been developed to introduce fashion

communication to those who want to learn more about styling, visual merchandising and building a brand You should be prepared

to work independently or as part of a team and have an open and curious mind The course will include experimenting with a variety

of media which may include photography and film, and developing visual identities with creative software

FINE ART

This course will introduce you to new ways of thinking and using various material processes within Fine Art by working on a project over the four days You will explore drawing, printing and painting as well as 3D forms Working in a purpose-built studio and with access

to an arts library crammed with inspiration, you will be encouraged

to experiment and challenge existing ideas using a range of materials and new ways of thinking

MODELMAKING

This course serves as an introduction to professional modelmaking techniques used worldwide It will appeal to those who are interested

in product design, prop building for film or performance or the construction of highly accurate models Within the University’s extensive workshop you’ll be shown how to safely use a variety of tools, machines and technologies By the end of the course, you will have produced a small physical model utilising the skills and techniques you have learnt
