THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION
The academic dress worn by scholars in the commencement procession
originated in the Middle Ages When European universities were forming
th th
in the 12 and 13 centuries, the scholars usually were clerics as well,
and they adopted garb similar to that of their monastic orders Buildings
were cold and drafty, so hoods and caps for shaved heads, and warm,
floor-length capes were necessities.
As the control of education passed from the churches, the garb was
modified in various ways, and there was great diversity in color and style
of cap, gown and hood worn at the different institutions The custom of
wearing academic dress was brought to this country in colonial times,
and in 1895 a standardized code of academic dress was established that is
followed by most colleges and universities in the United States Although
some institutions have added more colorful regalia, the black robe, hood
and cap are the typical apparel.
Both cap and gown are symbols According to legend, the privilege
of wearing a cap was the initial right of a freed Roman slave The
academic cap, therefore, has become a sign of the freedom of scholarship
The Oxford mortarboard, said to have originated in ancient Greece,
symbolizes the scholar’s commitment to a life of building. The gown
has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, intended to cover
clothing that could indicate rank or social stratum The bachelor’s gown
is plain, with long, pointed and open sleeves The master’s gown has even
longer sleeves, closed at the bottom with openings midway for the hands
The doctor’s gown has full-length lapels of velvet and bell-shaped sleeves
with three horizontal velvet bars.
Baccalaureate honors – Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum
Laude – are awarded for outstanding undergraduate scholarship with a
minimum 90 credits earned and the honors grade-point average met.
Faculty Honors are granted to graduates who are ranked in the top 10%
of their respective program with a minimum 70 graded credits, except BS
Nursing who must earn a minimum 43 credits.
The colors of honor cords, tassels and hoods reflect the degree of the wearer
The University of Washington Bothell colors are as follows:
Honor cords: baccalaureate honors–gold; Faculty Honors–purple
Tassel colors: BA Applied Computing–white; BA Business Administration– royal blue; BA Health Studies; BA Interactive Media and Design–white; BA Interdisciplinary Studies–white; BS Biology-golden yellow; BS Chemistry– golden yellow; BS Computer Science and Software Engineering–golden yellow; BA Educational Studies-light blue; BS Electrial Engineering-orange;

THE UNIVERSITY MACE
The University Mace, carried by associate professor, Joseph Janes, the University Marshall, symbolizes the authority of the University and of the faculty who have certified the graduates for their degrees Its presence signifies that these
proceedings take place under the official sanction of the Regents of the University of Washington.
Originally, the mace was an emblem of authority and
a prerogative of royalty The University Mace bears the inscription, “Presented to the University on the occasion
of its Centennial by the University of Washington Alumni Association, 1961.” It is engraved with the images of the University seal and historic University buildings.
THE PRESIDENT’S SEAL MEDALLION
President Ana Mari Cauce wears the President’s Seal Medallion when presiding over commencement ceremonies The tradition of the seal medallion began in
1958, when Dr Charles E Odegaard was inaugurated
th
as the University’s 24 president On one side of the medallion is the University seal with a facsimile of the four columns from the original territorial University building and the University motto “Lux Sit,” meaning
“Let there be light.” On the other side are the words,
“Seal of the President of the University.”
