STUDY SPOTLIGHT: RESPIRATORY DISEASES Comparing Treatments for a Rare Lung Disease
Noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis is a rare lung disease that can lead to longer-term
disability About 100,000 older Americans have the disease, which causes bacterial
growth and inflammation of the lungs This study examined the benefits and harms of
a steroid compared to antibiotics for patients with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis
Researchers found that patients prescribed steroids had a higher risk of a hospital
stay for pneumonia and outpatient treatment for lung infections, but a lower risk of
hearing loss
