To some professional people who might know more than 100 search engines the answer could be normal life, but with less quality indeed, simply because Google is the biggest and the best search engine in the world To show you how our life would

be without Google I will mention some facts about this search engine

Google is the world's most popular search engine It began as a search project in 1996

by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who were two Ph.D students at Stanford University The story of the it’s naming is a bit funny:

“In 1996, Larry Page and Sergey Brin called their initial search engine "BackRub," named for its analysis of the web's "back links Larry's office was in room 360 of the Gates C Building, which he shared with several other graduate students, including Sean Anderson, Tamara Munzner, and Lucas Pereira

In 1997, Larry and his officemates discussed a number of possible new names for the rapidly improving search technology Sean recalls the final brainstorming session as occurring one day during September of that year

Sean and Larry were in their office, using the whiteboard, trying to think up a good name - something that related to the indexing of an immense amount of data Sean verbally suggested the word "googolplex," and Larry responded verbally with the shortened form, "googol" (both words refer to specific large numbers which is 1 followed by a hundred zeroes ( the number was invented by Edward Kasner, an American mathematician)

Sean was seated at his computer terminal, so he executed a search of the Internet domain name registry database to see if the newly suggested name was still available for registration and use Sean is not an infallible speller, and he made the mistake of searching for the name spelled as "google.com," which he found to be available Larry liked the name, and within hours he took the step of registering the name

Google has become such a popular search engine that the term "Google" is now often used as a verb, synonymous with "search"

The first recorded usage of google used as a verb was on July 8, 1998, by Larry Page

himself, who wrote on a mailing list: "Have fun and keep googling! " Fearing the dilution and potential loss of its trademark, Google has attempted to discourage use of the word as a verb, particularly when used as a synonym for general web searching

( he dug himself !! ).

It was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary on June 15, 2006,[3] and to the 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary in July 2006

The American Dialect Society chose it as the "most useful word of 2002

Google does not sell placement within the results themselves (i.e., no one can buy a particular or higher placement)

Here are some enlightenments and tips for using Google:

1- Exclude Words:

Lets say you want to search for content about internet marketing, but you want to

exclude any results that contain the term advertising To do this, simply use the

"-" sign in front of the word you want to exclude

Example Search: internet marketing –advertising

2- Specific Document Types:

If you’re looking to find results that are of a specific type, you can write down the abbreviation of the file type after your topic For example, you might want to find only PowerPoint presentations related to internet marketing

Example: internet marketing ppt or internet marketing+ppt.

Incidentally, when using "|" instead of "OR", you don't need the spaces

So [Pizza hut|dominoes] is fine, and visually more intuitive

3- This OR That:

By default, when you do a search, Google will include all the terms specified in the search If you are looking for any one of one or more terms to match, then you can use the OR operator (Note: The OR has to be capitalized other wised it wont

be picked by the search engine)

Example: Emergency medicine board OR emergency medicine programm

4- Word Definitions:

If you need to quickly look up the definition of a word or phrase, simply write define:then write your term

Example: define: trichotillomania.

If some one asks why don’t we just write down the term then we see what Google will google for us? I would say this will make you screen and read the webs then see what is appropriate, opening it and start reading and sometime you figure out that you still didn’t picked up the meaning while if you use the define tip you will see as follows:

5- Google is a big teacher:

When you are to enter a word but you are not sure about it’s spelling, please don’t try

to check it up, Google will do it for you what so ever you are bad in spelling

Example: if you misspelled Saudi Arabia as “saodi arubia”, it will ask you

Did you mean: saudi arabia

You can ask for example “ population of japan” it will answer you as

Japan — Population: 127,433,494 (July 2007 est.)

You can ask by saying time in London you will see

4:31 PM Saturday (GMT) - Time in London, United Kingdom

6- Google is a big mathematician:

The next time you need to do a quick calculation, instead of bringing up the the XP’s calculator through 4 steps (start-programm-accessories-calculator), you can just type your expression in to Google

Example: 48512 * 1.02 or 3+6*45 then you click search then you will see

3 + (6 * 45) = 273.

You can challenge it by giving it BIG number but believe me you will be surprised

You can write 109F to C, you will see

109 degrees Fahrenheit = 42.7777778 degrees Celsius

7- Google history: A lot of people don't realize that you can see your complete search history if you are logged into your Google account when searching This is useful when you remember that you found something interesting through Google search "the other day" but just can't seem to find it now

8- Google allows 32 words within the search query (some years ago, only up to 10

were used, and Google ignored subsequent words) You rarely will need so many words in a single query – [just thinking of such a long query is a hard thing to do, as this query with twenty words shows] – however, it can come in handy for advanced searching

9- Google has a lesser known “numrange” operator which can be helpful Using e.g

[2000 2005] (that’s two dots in between two numbers) will find 2000, 2001, 2002 and

so on until 2005

10- Google has some exciting character to allow you to find just the facts upong entering simple questions or phrases like [when was Einstein born?] or [einstein birthday] (the answer to both of these queries is “Albert Einstein – Date of Birth: 14

March 1879”) This feature was introduced April this year and is called Google Q&A

11- Google searches for all of your words, whether or not you write a “+” before them (I often see people write queries [+like +this], but it’s not necessary)

12- Stop words traditionally are words like [the], [or] and similar which search

engines tended to ignore, unless you write OR in Google which will work for sure 13- Web history: actually once I glanced this on my screen I overlooked it, but

recently I was deeEEeeply inspired by this feature

Basically, it bring you all the webs you have visited even since months ago, as long as you are logged in at that time

14- I'm Feeling Lucky

The "I'm Feeling Lucky™" button takes you directly to the first web page Google returned for your query You will not see the other search results at all An "I'm

Feeling Lucky" search means you spend less time searching for web pages and more time looking at them

For example, to find the homepage for Harvard University, simply enter Stanford into the search field and click on the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button Google takes you

directly to "www.stanford.edu", the official homepage of Harvard University

15-Google earth:

Last but not least, it’s Google earth, it’s a really breath-holding, it made the world more colourful I remembered that the government of china was trying to sue Google company for such a program that might threaten china’s national security Once I heard this new I ran into my Pc to enjoy seeing china, it’s really crowded, how could

an airport be so close to the houses!!

Having mentioning all these feature this doesn’t mean we went over all the engine’s features, but there are a lot of others you have to google, mentioning some:

order to focus and improve your results.This is recently added, I used to work through it in UpTodate programm

 News Headlines: Enhances your search results with the latest related news

It’s a bit difficult to talk about Big thing like Google which changed the world in only few papers, and remember much of new things being developed by the Google

company so be updated with the new things they show in their search engine

By the way I recently heard that Google company paying one million dollar for the individual who brings new idea which succeeds So what do you expect from a company who has 15,916 full-time employees, most of which highly qualified, well equipped and highly motivated then they offer one million for an idea, definitely they will change the world
