Wisteria hysteria

Recreate the unrivalled queen of climbers with

Corinne Bradd no pruning required

PaperCrafter designer Corinne Bradd has brought the divine vine to life from none other than coloured cardstock Isn’t she clever? If you fancy having a go yourself – of course you do! – be sure to print your free flower templates from our website so you can get started straight away To streamline the process even further, download the SVG files instead and cut the flowers out

on your digital cutting machine – easy peasy!

1Print and trace around

the templates or scan

them onto your digital

cutting machine and cut

several of each sized flower

from pink or lilac cardstock

Each wisteria vine uses

between two to four of each

flower size

2Use the blade of a pair

of scissors to curl each

petal upwards before curling

the flower in and glueing the

small tab to the inside of the

opposite petal to make a

bell shape Glue all the

flowers, then leave to dry

3Take a 50cm length of

green embroidery thread

and place a small bead in

the centre Thread both

ends through a large-eyed

needle and pass through the

centre of one of the smallest

flowers, using a needle tool

to make a hole in the flower

first if necessary

4Thread on another small

bead and continue to

add flowers, gradually

increasing the size of the

bead as you move on to the

larger flowers Allow the

blossoms to hang freely,

securing the top with a dab

of glue if necessary

5Fold strips of green card

in half and cut out the leaf shapes using the templates Unfold each leaf and curl over scissors before glueing two or three to the top of the flower chains

Snip a long tapered strip from green card and wind tightly around a knitting needle to create tendrils

Add these to the top of each flower chain

Top tip

The beads in between each flower should be disguised

so try and colour match them to your choice of cardstock

• Templates or SVG files from papercraftermagazine.co.uk • Cardstock: pink,

lilac, green • Embroidery thread, green • Beads: 4mm, 6mm • Large-eyed needle • Knitting needle • Needle tool (optional) • Glue • Digital cutting machine (optional)

Learn some tricks of the trade from a cardmaking whizz and guarantee your place on the mantelpiece for Christmas 2022

WORDS BY ANDREW YOUNG

How to make a

Christmas card

like Claire Richards

Claire Richards

in her own words

Hi, I’m Claire I live in South Wales with my husband and two children I’ve been crafting for

as long as I can remember, after

my mum got me into it My craft room is also my home office, so I’m surrounded by pretty things during my day job that I have to resist I’m also a night owl though, and often craft late into the evening Aside from crafting, I like

to write postcards and send them all over the world as part of the Postcrossing project I’ve sent over 1,000!

When it comes to Christmas, we all want our crafts to

be truly spectacular Wowing our friends and family with a gorgeous greeting is (for us at least) what the festive season is all about So here at PaperCrafter

we thought we’d enlist the help of one of the best in the business to show us how it’s done, and who better to ask than Claire Richards? A master of colour and characters, Claire certainly knows a thing or two about crafting a seasonal card that’s both cute and classy With this perfect example of her skills, Claire shows off her knack for an inventive card design and love of a secret sentiment By following her lead and adding your own spin, you’ll be stunning your recipients in no time

Step 1

SELECT YOUR MOTIFS

Start by choosing your central theme and Christmas

characters Claire’s door

and doggy approach gives a wonderful homely feel

Step 2

CHOOSE YOUR COLOURS

Claire’s red and green combo works perfectly for

a traditional Christmas look, but you could pick a different pairing for

a quirky approach

Step 3

WHAT’S THE WOW?

To make a Christmas card as special as Claire’s, you need to liven up your design with something

as striking as her interactive door

Pop-up cards

of pop-ups They can be

a little fiddly at first, but once you’ve mastered the technique, you’re off! You’ll be able to experiment with different shapes, embellishments and colours to make an endless array of festive greetings that will take pride of place on any recipient’s mantelpiece This technique doesn’t need to be restricted to Christmas either, with any occasion deserving

of the pop-up fun.

N E X T L E V E L

The secrets to taking your pop-up cards from good to great are precision and invention Because the shape of these trees is based on folding, getting a clean, accurate fold is crucial

So make sure you measure well and use a good, reliable scoring tool Then, for flair, pay close attention

to your colour combinations I’ve gone for a mixture of traditional and modern, with the cool and complementary turquoise and pink scheme working particularly well.

A new chapter

Transform your old books with Corinne

Bradd’s genius upcycling ideas

We love reusing what we can and now Corinne Bradd has taken it to

the next level by finding a multitude of ways to give your old books

a new lease of life From adorable necklaces to decorative pumpkins,

Corinne can make it using little more than some scrap materials and

a dab of glue The techniques here are fairly simple, but may require

some patience, providing the opportunity for some chill-out crafting.

• Templates from papercraftermagazine.co.uk • Old books • Dies:

flowers, circles • Maps • Cereal boxes • Cardstock • Embroidery thread

• Cotton yarn • Washi tape • Jump ring • Necklace chain • Wooden skewer • Binder clips • Punch, hole • Alcohol marker, orange

• Decorative elements • Tools: darning needle, needle tool, compass

• Adhesives: PVA glue, glue stick • Die-cutting machine

[CRAF TER’S DICTIONARY]

Lark’s head knot

Also known as a cow hitch knot, the lark’s head knot involves passing both ends

of your thread over the object you’re attaching

to, and through the loop

in the centre of the thread See the diagram for

a visual guide

TASSEL BOOKMARKS

1Cut a spine or small cover from an old book and back with coloured cardstock Punch a small hole in the bottom of the spine, or a series of holes 5mm apart along the bottom edge of a cover

2For a spine, take a length

of embroidery thread and pass through the hole with a darning needle Keep threading through the hole

to make a series of loops When the tassel is big enough, wind the thread around the hank several times at the bottom of the spine, then pass the needle back up through the binding, through the hole and back through the binding to secure Clip the loops, comb out and trim

3For a cover, cut several 10cm lengths of thread and tie each one through

a hole by folding in half, passing the loop through the hole and threading the loose ends through the loop Tighten to make a lark’s head knot Comb out the ends of the thread and trim

NECKLACE

1Use a ruler to tear

several book pages into

5cm x 8cm rectangles Fold

each rectangle in half and

stack together so the folds

are all level Hold the stack

firmly with binder clips

before pasting the folds with

PVA glue Leave to dry

2Trim two 4.5cm x 5.5cm

sections from old book

covers and a thin spine

piece Fix together in a row

with a strip of thick paper,

leaving a 1mm gap between

the sections Glue the stack

of pages to the spine

section, fold the covers over

and secure the first and last

pages of the stack to the

inside covers

3Decorate the book cover

with washi tape and

other decorative elements

Use a needle tool to pierce

a hole in the top of the spine

and fit a large jump ring

into this so a chain can

be attached

DESK ORGANISER

1Find the centre of a book and work your way out from this point Fold the first page in half so the leading edge tucks into the spine

Fold the next page diagonally from the right side to the spine before folding in half as before Fold the third page in half as the first page Fold the fourth page diagonally from the left-hand side before folding

in half to the spine

2Continue folding the pages in this order until you reach the cover Turn the book around and repeat

this process from the centre

to the other cover You may find it easier to fold if you work out from the middle

in both directions rather than one at a time

FLORAL WREATH

1Use a pencil and compass to draw two concentric circles, 14cm and 24cm wide, onto a flattened cereal box and cut out the ring shape Layer onto another piece of cereal box card, then re-cut and adhere to strengthen it

Cover the ring with map paper, clipping the overhang

and folding it to the back Neaten the back with another ring of card

2Die cut various sized flowers from old book pages and different shades

of cream cardstock Layer some flowers together to make larger blooms

3Glue the large flowers around the wreath, allowing them to overlap Fill in the gaps with single smaller flowers Flip the wreath over and add single flowers around the edge

to ensure it looks even

Add a folded paper loop

to the back for hanging

Make it

AUTUMN LEAF BUNTING

Download the leaf templates from our website and cut from folded book pages, snipping heart shapes from the middle of each Glue each leaf onto coloured cardstock and cut around the shape to leave a narrow border Punch two small holes at the top of each leaf and thread a length

of cotton yarn through each one to hang

MINI PUMPKINS

1Use a circle die to cut

lots of discs from book

pages Fold each circle in

half and crease well Stack

up six folded circles so their

folded edges are flush and

hold the stack in place with

binder clips at each end of

Top tip

Vary the colour

of your bunting to

suit the occasion,

such as red and

green for a

Christmassy touch

the folds Paste a liberal amount of PVA glue onto the folds and leave to dry completely before removing the clips

2Use an orange alcohol marker to colour the edges of the stack and leave

to dry Stack six or seven stacks together and clip

before repasting to bind them all together Ensure the glue is completely dry before removing the clips

3Cut down a wooden skewer to the height of the pumpkin plus 2cm Glue the stick and allow to go tacky before wrapping the stack of book pages around

it Clip the ends of the wrap together as it dries

4Wrap the top of the stick with leftover book pages

Cut leaf shapes from more pages and fix to the top of the pumpkin Snip a tapered strip of paper, curl over the blade of a pair of scissors to make tendrils, then secure the top ends between the folds of the semicircles
