1 Introduction
Trang 21.1 The reason for choosing the topic.
It’s easy to see just how important English is around the world So more and more people arededicating time to studying English as a second language because English is the most commonlyspoken language in the world One out of five people can speak or at least undersand English Whether
we are looking for a job, taking an exam or planning to travel the world, studying English can help usprogress in both personally and professionally
However all languages have phrasal verbs that can not be understood literally Even if we knowthe meanng of all the words in a phrase and understand all the grammar of the phrase completely, themeaning of the phrases may be still confused. We have probably spent a long time learning new words.Words, however, do not just come in expressions Phrasal verbs are among of the most common ofthese expressions There are thousands of them in English and they are part of vocabulary in students’scourse books and no teachers can neglect teaching them since they constitute an important part That’swhy phrasal verb teaching and learning are often considered as a hard task
Having identified the problem, I have tried to search for solutions to help students learn phrasal
verbs more efficiently Thus, in this writing I would like to share “ some methods to teach phrasal verbs” with the hope that my colleagues can also considered my teaching strategies as useful
suggestions to help their students become more interested and confident in learning English

What are phrasal verbs?
Phrasal verbs are phrases that indicate actions They are generally used in spoken English and informal
texts Examples of such verbs include: turn down, come across and run into.
Trang 3Phrasal verbs consist of a verb and a preposition or an adverb:
When added to the verb the preposition or adverb may change completely the meaning of the verb
Here are some examples:
Phrasal verb
Taking into consideration, the phrasal verb definition as a group of words the meaning of
which is different from the meaning of its constituents Translation is not an easy task to perform
That’s why teachers and scholars find this process difficult but we can not omit teaching them because
of its importance in the understanding of English
Phrasal verbs are essential to successful commnication whether in listening, speaking, reading or
writing The accurate and appropriate use of phrasal is a distinctive mark of native- level command of
the language and it is a reliable measure of the proficiency of foreinge learners It is a fact that
ignoring phrasal verbs would cause a learner various problems That is why foreign language learners
must learn not only the grammatical structure and vocabulary of the target language but also the phrasal
verbs to integrate into the culture of the target language
Phrasal verbs are clearly presented in academic settings, consequently, failure to comprehend them
could affect academic performance A sound knowledge of phrasal verbs required in advanced English
tests such as the National Exam or Ielts Test because learners’language proficiency might be assessed
Trang 4on the basis of their understanding of phrasal verbs This means that the more phrasal verbs one knows, the more native-like one’s English will sound
The use of Some methods to teach phrasal verbs is not new But how to apply these methods
efficiently and to overcome difficulties in the teaching of phrasal verbs is what I want to share andpresent in this writing
2.2 Situation of the problem before applying the initiative experience.
2.2.1 For the teacher:
Most teachers understand the importance of learning phrasal verbs , especially for high schoolstudents But until now there remain many teachers who are fearful and confused of the ways to teachphrasal verbs They are not confident of when to teach, how much time they should spend on them andespecially how to present them clearly and comprehensibly
2.2.2 For the students:
Many students also said that, English is so challenging to learn because the language is full ofphrasal verbs They are often at a loss when seeing or conversing with native speakers who never stopthinking about phrasal verbs because they have become a natural part of conversation skills
These are the problems that urge me to find out the solutions to help students get over thedifficulties and hold interest in the foreign language in a flexible and easy way To know exactly about
the problem, I investigated 165 in four classes before applying “ methods to teach phrasal verbs” by
asking them the followng question:
