If you are new t o using Vist a, or if you want t o begin a clean slat e, you m ay want to cut out som e of t he bulk t hat com es wit h Vist a A popular program designed t o help you wit h t his t ask is nam ed vLit e

vLit e requires you t o copy t he set up files from your Vist a inst allat ion disc to your hard drive You t hen select t he com ponent s you want t o include in your inst all and t hen you m ak e a boot able ISO file

To launch t he Back up and Restore Cent er:

To back up your files, click Back up Files and follow t he direct ions Select t he directories and files you want t o back up and find a suit able place t o st ore t hese files I recom m end an ex t ernal hard drive or DVD(s)

2 3 Work with the Windows Registry

st at e it was in when you first purchased it

Windows Vist a DVD’s com e wit h a recovery cent er t o allow you t o fix operat ing syst em relat ed problem s If you do not have t his DVD, Microsoft provides a recovery disc

2 6 Add “Take Ownership” to Context Menu

Many folders in Vist a are prot ect ed from changes and require adm inist rat ive approval t o change every t im e Som et im es t his can becom e t edious, so I’ve creat ed a regist ry hack you can use t o t ak e ownership of select files

To add “Take ownership” to your right - click menu:

1 Download Tak eOwnership.zip

2 Ex t ract t he archive

3 Add “Take ownership” t o your cont ext menu by

m erging (double click ) Inst allTakeOwnership.reg int o your windows regist ry

2 7 Stop UAC Blacking Out the Screen

Have you not iced t hat when Windows Vist a prom pt s you t o allow a program t o t ak e act ion, t hat t he screen black s out ? This is t o show you t hat you are m oving to an elevat ed desk t op - where you will allow t he program t o cont inue and is a feat ure of User Account Cont rol (UAC.) This can be annoying but you can disable t his feat ure

To disable UAC screen black out :

1 Download DisableUACBlackout zip

2 Ex t ract t he archive

3 Double click on DisableUACBlackout reg

To re- enable t he elevat ed black out effect , double click on ReEnableUACBlackout reg

2 8 Disable User Account Control

If you feel confident wit h t ak ing cont rol of security, you probably don’t need t he User Account Cont rol (UAC)

To disable UAC:

1 Click t he St art but ton and click Cont rol Panel

2 Click User Account s

3 Select Turn User Account Cont rol on or off

4 Uncheck the box nex t t o “Use User Account Cont rol (UAC)…” and press OK

You will now be ask ed t o rest art your com put er to act ivat e your changes Aft er your com put er is rest art ed you won’t

be bot hered anym ore by t he UAC

To re- enable UAC, repeat t he above process and at st ep 4 recheck t he box nex t to “Use User Account Cont rol

(UAC)…” and press OK

3 0 Clean Your Computer

Just lik e any car, Windows needs t o be m aint ained and cleaned frequent ly Whenever I work on som eone’s com put er, I have a check list of t hings I lik e t o do t o ensure I won’t be work ing on t he sam e com put er anyt im e soon

Anyone can m aint ain their com put er; t hey just have t o learn how In t his chapt er you’ll learn som e basic tips and about som e t ools t o use – t o ensure your com put er becom es/ rem ains clutt er free and does not get sluggish

3 1 Autom atically Delete T em porary Files

The Windows Disk Cleanup Wizard will delet e your

t em porary files, but only if t hey are over a week old To

creat e a sim ple bat ch script t hat will clean up your

t em porary direct ories, do t he following:

3 1 1 Create the Batch File

To creat e a bat ch script t hat delet es your t em porary files:

1 Open Not epad and t ype t he following:

cd C:\ Users\ %username%\ AppData\ Local

rmdir / S / Q Temp

2 Save t he file as

Double click on t he file t o rem ove your t em porary files and free up space on your com put er

If t his doesn’t work and gives an access error, t ry replacing

%usernam e% wit h you windows login usernam e

3 1 2 Automate the Process

To autom at e this process, so you do not need t o

rem em ber t o run it , do t he following:

1 Right click on t he bat ch file and select Creat e Shortcut

c Hover over Programs, wait for t he menu t o load, and hover over St art up

Now when you log in to Windows Vist a, your t em porary files will be delet ed

3 2 Clean up Windows

Cleaning up Windows can be a t edious t ask as t here are

m any t em porary and unused files st ored everywhere Manual cleaning m ay be m ore t horough, but would t ak e hours Luck ily t here are t wo program s suit ed t o t his job The first of t hese t wo program s is t he well k nown

CCleaner CCleaner is a freeware syst em opt im izat ion, privacy and cleaning tool It rem oves unused files from your syst em - allowing Windows t o run fast er and freeing

up valuable hard disk space It also cleans t races of your online act ivit ies such as your Int ernet hist ory Addit ionally

it cont ains a fully feat ured regist ry cleaner

Anot her program I use frequent ly is Advanced Syst em Care

by Iobit (ASC.) ASC is a com prehensive PC- care ut ilit y t hat has a one- click approach to helping prot ect , repair and opt im ize your PC

Personally I prefer ASC, but CCleaner is gr eat t oo You do not need bot h of t hese program s; one of t hese pr ogram s should t ak e care of k eeping your com put er free of

t em porary clut t er

3 3 Disable and Delete the Hibernation File

Windows places a file on your hard drive t hat st ores a snapshot of your com put er when your com put er goes int o hibernat ion; t his file is used t o rest ore what you were doing when you were last on your com put er If you do not use hibernat ion, you can delet e t hese files and save as

m uch hard disk space as you have RAM (e.g., 512MB or 16GB—dependant upon t he am ount of RAM you have inst alled on your com put er.) In t his guide you will learn how t o disable hibernat ion and rem ove t he old hibernat ion file

3 3 1 Disable Hibernation

If you are sure you don’t hibernat e your PC (sleep and hibernat e are dif ferent ), you m ay disable t he feat ure as you will not need it To disable hibernat ion:

1 Click St art , Programs, and t hen right click on Command Prompt (or t ype into t he St art

m enu search box )

2 Click Run as administ rat or

3 If User Account Cont rol prom pt s you t o allow t he act ion, click on Cont inue

4 In t he Command Prompt window, type –

3 3 2 Delete the Hibernation File

Once you’ve disabled hibernat ion, you m ay st ill need t o delet e t he hibernat ion file t o save hard disk space To delet e t he hibernat ion file:

1 Click St art , Programs > Accessories > Syst em Tools

> Disk Cleanup (or t ype int o the

st art m enu search box and press Enter.)

2 If prom pt ed t o choose a drive, select t he drive on which Windows Vist a is inst alled and click OK

3 Disk Cleanup will scan t he hard drive and present you wit h a list of opt ions

4 Check Hibernat ion File Cleaner, and t hen click OK

5 When ask ed: Are you sure you want t o permanent ly delet e t hese files?, click Delet e Files

3 3 3 Enable Hibernation

If you decide you want t o use hibernat ion again, you can

enable it at any t im e:

2 Click Run as administ rat or

Hibernat ion is now enabled and ready for use

3 4 Reclaim Disk Space after Service Pack Install

When you inst all a Vist a service pack , a back up of all replaced files is m ade This is done so you can roll back to how your m achine was before you inst alled t he service pack Once you are happy wit h how your com put er is running wit h t he lat est service pack , you m ay delet e t he roll back files In t his guide, you will learn how t o reclaim disk space t ak en up by a Vist a service pack inst allat ion

1 Click St art > Cont rol Panel

2 Click Add or remove programs

From here, you can rem ove program s, enable and disable Windows feat ures, and m odify inst alled program s You

m ay not want program s to appear on t his list for several reasons:

• You m ay want to hide a m onit oring program so your k ids can’t see or rem ove it

1 Press Winkey+ R (or click St art > Run.)

2 Type in to open t he regist ry edit or (Work wit h t he Windows Regist ry.)
