Trang 8scratched and dirty, and her clothes weretorn “What happened to you?” askedMama.
Trang 9“Please tell us,” said Papa Brothercouldn’t believe how beat-up Sisterlooked Her jumper and blouse weretorn Her face and fur were a mess Evenher pink bow was drooping.
Trang 10“Did you fall?” asked Mama Sistershook her head no.
“Was there an accident?” asked Papa.Once again she shook her head no
Trang 11“I think I can tell you what happened,”said Brother “It looks to me like
somebody beat her up.”
“Beat her up? That’s outrageous!”said Papa
Trang 12“Who in the world would beat up asweet little cub like Sister?” askedMama.
“A bully might,” said Brother
Trang 13That’s when Sister stopped cryinglong enough to get some words out “B-B-Brother’s right,” she sobbed “A no-
good nasty rotten bully beat me up—and
Trang 14for no reason!” Just the thought of it
made her so angry that she started to cryall over again
Trang 15Mama and Papa helped Sister up thesteps and into the house After a drink ofwater, she calmed down enough to tellthem what had happened.
“Lizzy, Queenie, and I were playingtag at the playground when this new cub
Trang 16—a no-good bully named Tuffy—stuckout a foot and tripped me.
Trang 17So I got up and said, ‘Why don’t youwatch where you put your feet?’ Before Iknew what was happening, it was POW,BAM, WHAMMO, and I was flat on myback with this Tuffy character sitting on
my chest rubbing dirt in my face.”
Trang 18“Outrageous!” roared Papa “Where’s
my hat? I’m going over to that
playground and—” Mama pulled Papaaside
“You’re going to do no such thing,”she said
Trang 19“But something has to be done,” Papasaid.
Trang 20“Indeed, it does,” agreed Mama “Butright now we have to take care of
Sister.” She turned to call, “Brother!
Trang 21Would you please get me a wet washclo
— Where’s Brother?”
Trang 22“Don’t know,” said Sister “He washere one minute, and the next minute hewas gone.”
Trang 23Lizzy and Queenie were still at theplayground when Brother got there.
“I’ve got a knuckle sandwich for somebully named Tuffy,” he said “Where ishe?”
“Brother,” said Lizzy, “I think there’s
Trang 24something you ought to—”
Trang 25“Never mind the small talk,” he
growled “Just point him out and get out
of the way!”
Lizzy shrugged and pointed to thesmall building that housed the Boys’Room and the Girls’ Room
Trang 26But there was no one there No one, that is, but a little girl who was comingout of the Girls’ Room.
Trang 27But hold everything! The little girl
was wearing a T-shirt that said Tuffy!
“YOU’RE TUFFY?” said Brother.
“Yeah,” she said “Wanna makesomethin’ out of it?”
“But—but you’re a girl!” said
Trang 28“What did you expect me to be—aneggplant?” said Tuffy
Trang 29Brother Bear was shocked right down
to his very bones The big bully he wasgoing to clean up the playground with
Trang 30was not only a girl, but a little girl atthat Maybe even a bit smaller thanSister.
Trang 31When Lizzy and Queenie came over towatch, Tuffy figured out who Brotherwas “Hey!” she said “You must be thebig brother of Little Miss Pink Hairbow! She got fresh, so I cleaned her clock.
Trang 32Wanna make somethin’ out of it?”
Trang 33That was exactly what Brother wanted
to do But there was no way he could hit
a girl If he did, then he’d be the bully It
was all he could do to turn away andleave
Trang 34“Chicken! Just like your sister!”yelledTuffy Brother headed home, handsinpockets, staring at the ground.
Trang 35Something had to be done! But what?
As he passed the school, Brother got anidea But he would have to hurry It wasFriday afternoon, and the school would
be closing for the weekend He hoped
Mr Grizzmeyer, the gym teacher, hadn’tleft yet
Trang 36When Brother got home, he wascarrying something in a big bag.
Trang 38Instead of going in the front door, hequietly opened the side hatch anddropped the bag into the cellar.
Trang 40Then he closed the hatch and rejoinedthe family by going in the front door.
Trang 42“Where have you been?” askedMama “We’ve been having a familymeeting.”
“Er—I was just checking out theplayground,” Brother said
“And no doubt you found out thatTuffy is a girl,” said Mama
Trang 44“We’ve been discussing the situationand have pretty much decided that thebest thing for Sister to do is simply toavoid this awful Tuffy person Then, too, you’ll be at school, and you can keep aneye on Sister What do you think of theplan?”
Trang 45“It’s okay,” said Brother “But Sister’sthe one that got beat up What does shethink?”
“It’s okay, I guess,” said Sister “Butwhat I’d really like to do is punch thatTuffy’s nose right through her face, thenkick her in the shin, then knock her downand—”
Trang 47“Now, Sister,” said Mama, “we’vebeen through all that.”
Good! thought Brother Sister and Iare on the same wavelength
Trang 49Before dinner, Brother passed Sister anote It said, “Important! Meet me in thecellar at seven o’clock.”
Trang 50The first thing Sister saw when sheshowed up for the secret meeting wasone of Mama’s big bags of dried beanssitting on a stool.
Trang 51There was a drawing of a face marked
Tuffy taped to it, and Brother was
standing beside it holding the bag he hadgotten at school He also had a book “
What’s this all about?” asked Sister
Trang 52“It’s about that Tuffy character, andyou not getting beat up again,” Brothersaid.
“Sounds good so far,” said Sister
“Mama’s bag of beans is a punchingbag,” Brother said
Trang 53“A punching bag named Tuffy,” saidSister “Perfect!” She gave the beans apretty good punch.
“Not bad,” said Brother
Trang 54“What’s in the other bag?” Sisterasked.
“Boxing gloves,” Brother said “And
this book is called The Art of
Self-Defense.”
“Where did you get all this stuff?”asked Sister
Trang 55“From Mr Grizzmeyer I told him Ihad a friend who was having troublewith a bully We’ve got it just for theweekend It goes back Monday
morning.”
Trang 56“Then what are we waiting for?” Sistersaid “LET’S GET STARTED!”
Trang 57Sister turned out to be a good student
of the art of self-defense With Brother’shelp, she learned—
the left jab,
Trang 59the right cross,
Trang 61the left hook,
Trang 63and the uppercut.
Trang 65She also learned to duck.
Trang 66And she punched Mama’s dried beanssilly.
Trang 68“Well, you learned quite a lot over theweekend,” Brother said on Mondaymorning “But there’s something very
important for you to remember: You still
have to avoid Tuffy! She’s a mean little
thing She was even ready to take me
on!”
Trang 69“Don’t worry,” said Sister “I can stillfeel where she socked me on the jaw.”
Trang 70Sister did a good job of avoidingTuffy She avoided her all day Monday,
and all day Tuesday
Trang 71But at recess on Wednesday, Tuffy didsomething so mean and nasty that Sister
just had to do something Tuffy was
throwing stones at a baby bird that couldn’t fly yet! “Stop that, you bully!”
shouted Sister “You’ll hurt that babybird!”
Trang 72“Well, if it isn’t Little Miss PinkHairbow!” said Tuffy “You knowsomethin’? I’d much rather hurt you!”
Trang 74She rushed at Sister with her hardlittle fists ready.
Trang 75But Sister was ready, too She had herleft out and her right up, protecting herjaw When Tuffy threw a hard right,Sister ducked, then hit her square on thenose with a right cross.
Trang 76That quickly, Tuffy found herselfsitting on the ground with a bloody nose.
Trang 77And almost that quickly, one of therecess teachers swooped down on Sisterand Tuffy, pulled them into school, andsat them on the principal’s disciplinebench.
Trang 78Sister’s mind was a blurry mix ofpride that she had protected the babybird and shock that she was sitting on theprincipal’s famous discipline bench But
Trang 79she was even more shocked when shesaw that Tuffy was crying.
Trang 80“What are you crying about? I only hityou once,” Sister said.
“I’m not crying about that,” said Tuffy
“Then what are you crying about?”
Sister couldn’t help wondering what
Trang 81could make a cub as tough and mean asTuffy cry.
Trang 82“If the principal tells my mom and dadabout this,” said Tuffy, “I won’t be able
to sit down for a—well, a long time.”Hmm, thought Sister Here’s a cubwho maybe gets hit a lot at home Maybethat’s why she likes to hit other cubs at
Trang 83school But Sister didn’t think about thatfor long.
Trang 85She was too worried about what wasgoing to happen to her Mr Honeycomb, the principal, was very strict aboutfighting.
Trang 86The way it turned out, one of the otherrecess teachers had seen the whole thingand told Mr Honeycomb that Sister wasjust trying to protect a baby bird So Mr.
Trang 87Honeycomb let Sister off with awarning.
Trang 89As for Tuffy, the principal didn’t call
in her parents But she did lose a week
of recess, and she had to visit the schoolpsychologist twice a week for quite awhile
