This book was written to facilitate column sizing and reinforcement design for structural engineers. It arranges the design data in a clearly structured manner, and provides quick and easy ways for engineers to compare the feasibility of multiple alternatives (various column sizes and reinforcement configurations). With the help of this book, engineers can rapidly produce outputs for architects, which the latter can incorporate into their architectural layout plans. These outputs can also benefit quantity surveyors, especially for costing purposes, and help avoid careless design errors. The book is chiefly intended for structural engineers who implement Eurocode 2 for reinforced concrete design. To gain the most from it, readers should possess a basic understanding of column design, e.g. the stresses and forces produced in columns and their reinforcements when subjected to axial load and bending moment. However, the book also provides explanatory notes for the design data tables, allowing them to be used without prior background knowledge.

Trang 5Preliminary planning stage aims to produce the final building layouts and details that satisfy the developer in terms of cost and aesthetics, without compromising the safety of its occupants and functionality of its utilities This is the stage where countless discussions, amendments and adaptations are required.
For the best interest of the client, an engineer is responsible to provide an optimum design that adopts the requirements from the client or other consultants.
A lot of time and energy will be spent by doing repetitive design and calculation works before the best design is produced.
This book is tailored to improve the structural design procedure A designer can save the hassle from repetitive design by referring to the tables and obtain the size and reinforcement required within a minute without the needs of modelling In contrast, ordinary design steps can easily take hours or days to yield the same result Other than design, this book can speed up the design checking process as well During construction stage, some changes in architectural layout need to be addressed immediately by revising the structural system accordingly At this moment, any delay in response brings financial impact to the client With this book, decision regarding the change in size and reinforcement can be made immediately.

Kar Chun Tan graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with first-class honours He subsequently began his career in civil and structural engineering consultancy and has been in the industry for the past five years During that time, he has been involved in multiple projects at various scales: from a 1400-acre township development to 50-storey high-rise buildings Together with Farzad Hejazi, he recently published the book Steel Structure Design Based on Eurocode 3.

Abstract Pursuant to clause 9.5.1 in EN 1992-1-1:2004 (Eurocode 2), vertical concrete structural element is de fined as column if and only if the ratio of its larger dimension (depth) to smaller dimension (width) is not more than 4 This chapter explained the method used to determine cross-sectional resistance of a reinforced concrete column, i.e ultimate axial resistance as well as axial and bending resis- tances under balanced failure Brief write-up of column design to Eurocode 2, including but not limited to the formula, as well as method to derive and interpret column design chart Limitations to design such as maximum and minimum rein- forcement content, minimum rebar spacing, concrete cover, etc., were clari fied as well This book tabulated the above-mentioned design data in an optimized fashion.
In relation to that, this chapter also explained the format of such table and the way
to interpret the data from there Illustration of all reinforcement con figurations considered in this book was prepared to help the designer in decision-making during reinforced concrete column detailed design.

Column design chart is commonly used to determine the reinforcement required for any case To develop design chart for a column with particular reinforcement, Eqs ( 1.1 ) and ( 1.2 ) are used to determine corresponding N and M values for various neutral axis positions (x value) Each pair of N and M values corresponding to a speci fic neutral axis position should be plotted as a point on graph of N against
M All plotted points must be joined with a smooth line The drawn line is the envelope of column resistance against axial and bending The column and its reinforcement are deemed inadequate if a point (representing the combination of design axial force and bending moment) lies beyond the line For example, a column with resistance envelope shown in Fig 1.2 will fail when it is subjected to
40 kNm bending moment and 1200 kN axial load If the design bending moment is
25 kNm and axial load is 1000 kN, then the column shown below is deemed safe.

Abstract This chapter compiled tabulated ultimate axial resistance, as well as axial and bending moment resistance (about major axis) under balanced failure for commonly used rectangular columns reinforced by up to 16 numbers of 12-mm diameter rebar in all possible con figurations The column sizes ranged from 150 to
600 mm width with depth-to-width ratio from 1:1 to 4:1 For a compression member, concrete strength plays essential role Therefore, the design data is tabu- lated based on concrete grade: C30/37, C40/50 and C50/60 to provide flexibility for designer Ultimate axial resistance will aid the engineer to decide the size and reinforcement of an axially loaded column, whereas the axial and bending moment resistance under balanced failure provide insight in column capacity when it is subjected to bending moment.
12-mm diameter rebar is usable in column with cover of 30 mm and above, to ful fil the bond requirement with the allowance for deviation as stated in EN 1992-1-1 Table 4.2 Every design must ful fil the maximum and minimum reinforcement content requirement of 4 and 0.2% of concrete area, respectively Moreover, the reinforcement con figuration must also fulfil the minimum spacing of 25 mm, considering aggregate size is 20 mm and allowance of 5 mm.
In this book, design data for 12-mm diameter rebar is not available for the following column sizes because the minimum reinforcement content requirement (regardless the value of cover) could not be satis fied:
