1 General

This method statement describes the soil improvement using Sand Drain

Operation System that works by installing sand pillars into soft ground at desired

locations The technique involves driving closed-bottom casings into the soft soil using either Static Driving or Dynamic Driving according to soft soil conditions

When the casings reach the required depth, they are then filled with sand The bottom of casings are then opened and the casings withdrawn leaving the sand

pillars A load is then imposed on top of the sand pillars to remove water through

sand drains and consolidate the soft ground This method statement covers the items

as shown below;

Sand Drain installation is approximately 85,254.20m, covering an area of

18,311.03m’ The installation pattern of sand drain is 1.5m apart both ways having varying depth as shown in the working drawing plan

5.1.1 Option 1: Crane with Leader Supported by a Frame

The crane model that may be used are Sumitomo (LS108, LS118, LS120), Kobelco

The machine operates on two chain wheels and both are use for

releasing and shrinking

The capstan system included 3 hydraulic heavy lifting capstans; the

maximum load of each capstan is 15.8/ 15.8/ 5.0 Ton

The maximum lifting capacity: 55 ton /The lifting work capacity: 20

ton

The leader system: tube type with D580 x 8 mm, equipped with

vibro-hammer sliding line sized 70 x 330 in front, one side equipped with a service ladder line and other side equipped with sand cart sliding

5.4 Steel Pipe

Steel pipe is use to make the hole, prevent soil from entering the hole and receive

sand to form drainage The pipe head diameter is 430 mm and the pipe bottom is equipped with valve The valve is close when driving down and is open when extracting The pipe diameter is smaller for purpose to reduce friction The upper

part of the pipe is equipped with sand box and sand feed tank

5.5 Sand Bucket

Sand bucket receives sand from front-end loader, then be pulled up along the

leader line and then dump the sand to sand box The sand bucket capacity is

1.0-1.8m?

5.6 Loader:

principle is to form sand drain by pipe according to design depth and spacing, and

then fill it up with sand, and use air to compact the sand In Vietnam, this workmanship is used generally, especially in expressway construction The Contractor will use the air type for the sand drain The work includes site

preparation, supply of materials and instruments, sand filling, construction of

sand drains, construction embankment to design height, settlement observation and all other works required by the drawings

7.4 Construction Procedure

7.4.1 Site Preparation

7.4.1.1 Survey works and installation of instruments in dummy area

7.4.1.2 Site clearance Work site must be cleared and graded for equipment operation

7.4.1.3 The service roads shall be kept in good conditions for transportation of

equipment and materials

7.4.1.4 To set out locations of sand drains to be constructed and mark out

construction area, and use total station to locate center, side and other

drains according to Shop Drawings and dimensions

7.4.1.5.Around the construction site, effective drainage system must be

7.4.2.1 Each of the equipment and tools shall be deployed in the site;

7.4.2.2 Provide fuels and other oils for the equipment;

7.4.2.3 Assembly A frame, leader and main boom of the crane;

7.4.4.2 Trial Driving

Trial Drain: KM44+080- KM44+175, a 95m-section of sand drain The

Contractor shall arrange a trial installation to demonstrate the

satisfaction of the equipment, method, materials

* Pipe Driving: Start equipment, place pipe, check pipe verticality with

lead line, check length of the pipe and drive the pipe with vibration hammer

Report on trial construction shall be prepared and submitted by the Contractor to the Engineer for his comments or approval prior to large-scale construction

7.4.5.Construction of Sand Drains

“* Before construction, the Contractor will set out location of the center drain with coordinate system (refer to working drawing), and use steel ruler and total station to set out locations of sand drains one by one This work must be carried out in the day before construction

“* Equipment shall move follow a direction so as not run over the previous installed ones

7.4.5.1.1 Move the equipment to required location, close pipe valve, use lead line

to check and adjust verticality of pipe

7.4.5.1.2 Driving Pipe: Open air valve at the bottom during driving pipe, open

quick valve from sand box The front-end loader dump sand to sand cart, continue driving down, when the pipe reaches the required depth , start sand cart to dump sand into sand feed tank, then continue to drive the

pipe to reach specified depth

7.4.5.1.3 Extracting pipe: When the pipe reaches the calculated depth, to fill with

sand for the second time until it reaches the calculated level, close quick valve and drain head air valve, then open air-pressing valve Air pressure

reaches 4-4.5 bar, and keep it, then, extract the pipe slowly while vibrating,

or when every 0.5m is extracted, stop extracting, vibrate 20-30 seconds, or press the pipe down then extract it to compact fallen sand to the drain, and also extend the diameter of the drain, the vibration force shall be 30-70KN and can not be more, in order not to disturb the earth around, the

extraction speed shall be at 1-2m/min, when extracting pipe, the top of

sand drain shall be at least 30cm higher than the CSB bottom To extract the pipe completely, close all air valves, to remove the equipment to a new

location

7.4.5.1.4 If any blockage is found while driving pipe, it shall be reported to the

Engineer and drive within the area of 50cm, if it does not satisfy the design, ask advice of the Engineer and the Employer

7.4.5.2 Parameter Determination

7.4.5.2.1 Length of Steel Pipe:

The steel pipe length is based on equipment working platform level and designed drain head height

L=H1-H2+0.5 (m)

H1: Elevation of ground where the equipment stands (m) H2: Drain top elevation (m)

0.5m: Plus length

7.4.5.2.2 Diameter & Thickness of Steel Pipe:

Outer diameter of pipe head must be equivalent to that of designed sand drain, i.e., 430 mm (including thickness of pipe 15mm)

Diameter of steel pipe shall be equivalent to or less than that of the head, the latter is better, because it can reduce friction while driving

or extracting pipe The pipe shall be thick to secure stability and durability of the pipe, the thickness shall be 15 mm

7.4.5.2.3 Calculation of Sand Content for Drain,

L: Length of drain

w: Water content of sand( %);

e: Required void ratio after the base is compacted

7.4.5.2.4 Sand Length in Pipe:

Sand is run from sand cart to sand feed tank, then running down to steel pipe through one way automatic valve The length of sand in steel pipe is calculated as per volume (V) of sand vehicle,

7.4.5.3 Sand Drain Length Inspection

According to above calculation, the Contractor will find the required length, and mark it on the pipe’s outer surface, drive pipe down, and it reaches to the required level when the mark reaches the site surface

Driving the steel tube to the calculated depth, then use steel ruler to measure the sand length inside the tube through sand feeding tank opened

7.4.5.4 Site Inspection

After completion of all processes, check the sand drain diameter and drain grid dimension, check 4 drains at random, for diameter, drain head shall be dug out, and then measure its diameter

7.4.5.5 Note:

7.4.5.5.2 After one area is finished, the Contractor shall prepare report on the

work location, work time (from begin to end), sand drain quantity and

depth of each drain

8.1.1 Personal Security: Experienced technical staff will be assigned to the key

positions;

8.1.2 Technical Security: Review of the detailed drawings and proposal of

8.1.3 Material Security: All construction materials will be subject to related tests to

satisfy the related requirements

8.1.4 Mechanical Security: keep them well maintained and repair regularly During

8.2

construction, no equipment or equipment shall be mobilized out of site so as

to satisfy the construction

Keys of Quality Control

8.2.1 Seriously, carefully and strictly record the site original drain construction and

fill out original record forms, and timely submit them to the Engineer for approval and signature, and avoid shortage of drain

8.2.2 Select driver, hammer and A-frame according to required depth of the drains

in the soil, and performance of sand drain shall be paid high attention to, all materials for the drain shall be inspected according to the design requirement Only when they satisfies construction requirement, the materials can be transported to the site

8.2.3 During the course of drain construction, the Contractor will often use lead

line horizontal rule to check verticality of drain wall, to avoid inclined wall

Constant load vibration and pressing method shall be used during driving

Each drain shall be driven continuously and in one time until it’s formed

8.2.4 If any detrimental conditions during the course of construction, it shall be

reported to the Engineer timely, and shall be solved by technical persons

9 Construction in Rainy Season

To establish construction measures in rain days and emergency plan Related departments should carry out site inspection to make sure any problem to be

To strengthen maintenance of dike or embankment to avoid collapse;

To make the drains properly to avoid any drainage accident;

To collect weather information in advance and take precaution measures;

During soft soil treatment, the groundwater shall be lowed as low as possible and remove surface water

Temporary access road shall be maintained and make sure proper drainage to provide good access condition All the vehicles shall be maintained to ensure its work safety

Implement policy of Both Safety and Prevention First, and on the basis of

safety education and system guarantee, the Contractor will avoid serious accidents for human reason absolutely, and strictly observe Operation Safety Regulations

When it is necessary to move the pile driver, take into consideration the

following factors:

* whether the site ground can meet the bearing capacity of pile driver;

* whether the site ground is smooth and plane;

“ whether there are overhead structures or obstructions (such as overhead high pole electricity line and overhead cable for the purpose of construction) within the site area

The Contractor will work out safety instructions, carry out safety education regularly, and correct timely any unsafe work condition or way to secure

construction safety;

When entering and on the site, all constructors shall wear helmet and slide-proof boots according to safety regulations Obvious warning sign boards

shall be set up on construction site or work area

The site shall be with enough bearing capacity to bear the construction

equipment when it moves or work on the surface The site shall be leveled or

to be flattened, and there should be no any object in the air to obstruct the work of the equipment, such as high-voltage or construction power line, in

order that the equipment could move on the site freely

Any person cannot enter dangerous working area without permission Wear

equipment

10.6 The constructors must follow instructions by site safety director, and exercise

cares over all kinks of lines and pipe lines which are not removed on the ground or underground at any time, non-operator shall not operate construction equipment, the operator must be proved with certificate to be qualified before starting operation Any constructor shall take his mind on duty and works seriously If any dangerous sign, problem shall be solved timely Constructor can not drink alcohol or wear slippers during the course of construction

10.7 Night construction shall be carried out with enough illumination When it’s bad weather, stop the works, for construction in rainy season, there shall be lightning protection;

10.8 During installation, the Contractor shall take fire-proof measures and work out relative rules and regulations, with quite good safety and guard

11 General Prevention

For safety guarantee measures counter measures to prevent accident and injury/death, please refer to safety control plan;

11.1 All construction workers, including engineers, will be trained with safety of

construction, equipment, power, explosive-fire-proof and work first-aid;

11.2 First-Aid Box: there must be first-aid box on the site with specified quantity

of drugs and medical cotton;

11.3 Public Security involves safety protection of engineering, personnel, property,

office and Living area;

12.2.The crane cannot lift objects exceeding scope of boom, when the object is in

the air, it’s prohibited for persons to move material or other objects under the

boom;

12.3 When lifting object in horizontal direction, the lifted object must be at least 0.5m higher than any object in the scope;

12.4 When lifting long object, the lifted object shall not turn;

12.5 The labors for transport and installation must be experienced in operation and

its safety and related technology, and shall wear safety helmet, gloves and shoes and other work protection during working on the site The lifting and installing shall be directed by an appointed person according to right signal When lifting, no person shall stand beside or near the object, and the lifted object cannot cross over any person, any person must be at least Sm away from

the rotary scope of the crane

13 Environmental Control

Referring to environmental control measures, the Contractor will execute environmental protection according to the related Vietnam regulations during the course of construction

13.2 Set up system of waste recycling, reserve and disposal During the course of

construction, the waste shall be removed timely and completely before

completion of the construction;

13.3 During the course of construction, construction materials shall be stored in

order neatly

13.4 For construction equipment, serious oil leaking shall be prohibited, and it’s also prohibited to discharge oil water from mechanical operation and

maintenance without treatment

13.5 Pollution as noise and waste gas from mechanical operation shall be

minimized, when night construction is carried out near residential area,

processes with noise and vibration will not be carried out as practicable as possible, to avoid noise disturbing the local residents
