 Intensive reading:students read the text

slowly and concentrate hard on the

meaning, words or sentence structures used

in the text

 Extensive reading: students read long texts rapidly often for pleasure with emphasis on general meaning

Stages of a reading lesson

Pre-reading stage

 The pre-reading should be implemented to activate and

build knowledge of learners or motivate students to read as well as let them be familiar with some of the language

needed in coping with the text

 giving them a context and by pre-teaching some of the

most difficult language

 stimulating interest by setting the scene

 encouraging them to make predictions about the contents

of the text from the title

 giving students a clear and authentic purpose for reading the text

 asking them one/two guiding questions

While-reading stage

 The while-reading stage intends to help students to

understand the specific content and the rhetorical structure

of the text Teachers use questions and tasks to practice

appropriate skills and to make students aware of those skills Teachers might

 - allow students to read silently, using different skills and

strategies

 - encourage speed in reading, give a time limit

 - allow students to co-operate and help each other

 - check students’ reading comprehension by using different questions/tasks/activities (True/false, matching, multiple

choice …)

 - ask students to guess the meaning of the new words

The last stage is post reading which aims

reviewing the content, work on bottom-up concerns such as grammar, vocabulary and discourse feature and consolidate what has been read relating the information from the text to the students’ knowledge, interests

and opinions

 Teachers consolidate the language materials having been taught by a variety of

writing/speaking/ listening activities or

tasks
