3 GRAMMAR
3.1 The passive voice with modals:
can/ could/ may/ might/ will/ would/ must/ shall/ should/ ought to + be + PP
- We use the passive voice when the agent of the action is not known or not important
- If the agent is known, it can be indicated by the phrase beginning with “by”
3.2 Comparative and superlative adjectives
- Short adjectives (one-syllable adjectives, two-syllable adjectives ending with “y”):
adj + ER, the + adj + EST
- Long adjectives (other two-syllable adjectives, more than two-syllable adjectives):
MORE/ LESS + adj, THE MOST + adj
- Irregular adjectives:
bad – worse - the worst
good – better - the best
many/much – more - the most
little - less - the least
- Note: We tend not to use less/ the least to form comparatives and superlatives with one-syllable adjectives
We use the opposite instead
3.3 Articles (a / an / the)
- We use a / an with a countable noun when we first mention it and the after that
Ex: He is planning a wedding reception
He has invited 100 people to the wedding reception
- We use the when it is clear in the situation which thing or person we mean
Ex: The bride looks very happy
