4. CHAPTER 4: DATA ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS

4.1 DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE PARTICIPANTS

4.1.1 The Students

There are 195 students participated in the study. 121 students (62.1%) were female and 74 students (37.9%) were male. Most students were between the ages of 21 to 23 (46.7%) and 18 to 20 (26.2%). A small number of students were under 18 years old (2.6%) and 24.6% were over 24 years old. 135 students (69.2%) were university students, only 2 of them (1.0%) were at high school and 58 of the students (29.7%) were working.

The majority of students have studied English more than seven years, in which, 44.1% had studied English from 7 years to 10 years, 25.6% had studied English from 10

years to 13 years, and 6.2% had studied English for more than 13 years. About two-thirds of students (66.7%) had studied at YFLS for less than three months. Only few students had studied for more than a year: 3.6% of the students had studied at YFLS for more than 12 months and 2.1% had studied for more than 24 months. Similarly, only 13 students (6.7%) had studied in communicative classes for more than 12 months and 6 students (3.1%) had studied in communicative classes for more than 24 months and the majority of students (59.5%) had studied in communicative classes for less than three months. A total of 61.5% students who participated in the survey studied at elementary classes, 19%

studied in pre-intermediate classes and 19.5% studied in intermediate classes. Table 1 shows a summary of the general demographic information about participating students

4.1.2 The Teachers

There were 21 teachers who responded to the questionnaires. Among the teachers, 47.6 % were female and 52.4% were male. Most teachers (95.2%) were under 40 years old and only 4.8% were over 40 years old. The great majority of teachers (81.0%) had worked as an English teachers for more than three years, in which, 28.6% had working experience range from three years to less than seven years, 42.9% had worked from seven years to less than 15 years, 9.5% had more than 15 years of working experience. Only 19.0% of the teachers had worked as teacher less than three years. They were all teaching at YFLS. Nearly half of them, 42.9 %, had worked there for less than three years, 28.6%

had their experience at YFLS ranged from three years to less than 10 years and the rest, 18.6%, had spent more than 10 years working at YFLS. All the teachers had also been in charge of communicative classes for years. Among them, nearly one third of the teachers (38.1 %) had taught communicative classes for less than three years, 28.5% had worked

with communicative classes from three years to less than seven years, 28.6% had from seven years to 15 years of working experience in communicative classes and 4.8% of them had more than 15 years experience of teaching communicative classes. Due to the administration of this school which makes a teacher follow his/her class from beginning level to advanced one, most teachers were in charge of the classes at different levels of proficiency: Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced although at the time of participating in the research, some of them were in charge only one or two levels.

All of them held a diploma: a great number of teachers, 66.7%, had a Bachelor degree, 16.7% had a Master degree and 16.7% were working towards a Master degree, none of them held a doctorate. Table 2 presents the summary of the general demographic information about participating teachers.
