Welcome to Cambridge Checkpoint Lower Secondary World English Workbook 7 This is the first of
three books intended to provide practice in the skills you have acquired by using the Cambridge
Checkpoint Lower Secondary World English series of student’s books Each of the workbooks is
planned to complement the corresponding student’s book and to support the material contained
in it
The chapters in Workbook 7 reflect the topics contained in Student’s Book 7 Each chapter contains
exercises to allow you to practise a range of key skills in the use of English which, in general, follow
the sequence of the advice given on these key skills in Student’s Book 7
This workbook is intended both to help you acquire the skills to be fully competent in your ability
to understand and write English and also to act as valuable support in your preparation for the
Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests that you may take during your school career
There is no set way to approach using the workbook – you may wish to use it to supplement your
understanding as you work through each chapter of the student’s book or you may prefer to use it
to recap on particular topics at a later point It is hoped that the organisation of the material in the
book is sufficiently flexible to allow whichever approach is best suited to your needs

Mr Baker even brought doughnuts for us!
Of course, Kevin just had to show off by bringing the largest cake I’ve ever seen It was so big that his father had to ask Mr Baker for help to carry it in from the car
Unfortunately, it looked better than it tasted Sharon’s homemade chocolate muffins were much better than that cake At least they didn’t stick to my teeth.
I’m so proud of our class! We put in a lot of effort for the games, and it has paid off! We had our differences
at the beginning of the school year, but the competitions and challenges we faced in the inter-class games really helped to bond us together They helped us to see our strengths We’ve all become good friends now Even Kevin

Festivals in Singapore
Festivals are celebrated all around the world throughout the year Most festivals are unique to certain
cultures and are often celebrated in remembrance of a particular legend or folk tale As a multicultural
society, Singapore has many different festivals that demonstrate the rich culture of its various ethnic
communities.
Chinese New Year
The most common Chinese festival is the Chinese New Year Also known as the Lunar New Year,
celebrations begin on the eve of the first day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar, where
families gather together for a ‘reunion dinner’ Celebrations for the festival last for another 15 days
where families and friends visit each other and exchange auspicious well wishes for the new year ahead
During the festival, the luckiest colour is red, and children are blessed by their elders with red packets or
hongbaos filled with money.
Hari Raya Puasa
The most well-known festival celebrated by Muslims in Singapore is Hari Raya Puasa or Eid al Fitr It is
celebrated after observing 30 days of dawn-to-dusk fasting during the month of Ramadan The month
of Ramadan is a time for Muslims to purify their bodies and souls by abstaining from food and drink
during the day Families and friends come together at the end of each day to break their fast with

Read about Festivals of Fire
Exercise 10b
Read the text below and answer the questions that follow
Festivals of Fire
Sky Lantern Festival
According to the people of Pingxi, the Sky Lantern Festival originated about two thousand years ago
during the Xing Dynasty At that time, bandits frequently raided the villages, forcing residents to seek
shelter in the mountains Village watchmen fought the bandits later and used ‘fire balloons’ as signals
to inform the residents that all was well and their houses were safe once again When residents hiding
in the hills saw the lanterns, they knew it was time to go home Today people scribble messages of their
hopes and dreams then release them into the night sky to symbolise the end of the Chinese New Year
period and a time for renewal and the future.
The Mountain Roast
Wakusa Yamayaki is a Japanese festival that is celebrated on the fourth Saturday in January each
year The name of the festival literally translates as ‘The Mountain Roast’ because the dead grass on
the hillside of Mount Wakakusayama is set ablaze on this day Some people claim that the burning of
the mountainside began during boundary conflicts between Nara’s great temples while others claim
the fires were used to drive away wild boars Once set ablaze, the mountain can burn for up to an
hour Throngs of people attend this festival each year It is a beautiful spectacle and can be seen from
anywhere in the city.
1 Why did the people of Pingxi seek shelter in the mountains?

My own poem
Exercise 1
Now it is your turn to try writing your own poem about waste and recycling! Be sure to use rhyming
words You may use the rhyming words on page 39 of the Student’s Book:
l tins/bins
l away/way
l can/plan
l do/you
Try to find other words that rhyme to help you in your poem Once you have written your poem,
practise reading it to a partner
Trang 36Creating a poster
Exercise 2
When designing your own poster about recycling waste, consider the following:
l What is your poster about?
l What is the most important message you want to share with readers?
l What do you hope your poster will achieve?
l What kind of images or colours will help you achieve your aims?
The layout of your poster is important Avoid including so much text that it looks cluttered, as it will be
difficult for the reader to know what the most important message is Only include the most important
information in your poster, although you could include details of how people can find out more
information if they wish
The diagram below shows a possible layout for a poster This layout includes three large illustrations/
diagrams/photographs with text set around the images
A poster usually includes a slogan and a bold image Strong colours and clear wording help communicate
the poster’s message to its audience.
Trang 37As a group, think about the poster you would like to create on the topic of reducing waste in your
community Will you focus on Reducing, Reusing, Recycling … or all three?
The following words can be used in your poster Brainstorm some other words which might be
suitable for your poster and add them to the list
Now create a slogan for your poster with the words your group has chosen Here are some examples
of slogans:
l Reduce waste before we run out of landfill!
l Go green! Choose eco-friendly products today!
l Let’s rally together and save our environment!
Once you have come up with your own slogan, write it here
As a group, create a poster on recycling waste, which can then be displayed in the classroom
Get involved in environmental conservation
Exercise 3
Everyone can play a part in protecting the environment Write a paragraph in the space below
to explain how your school community can get actively involved in environmental conservation
or waste reduction (or both!) Use the ideas and content you have gathered during the different
activities you have completed so far in Unit 3 of the Student’s Book
You should include a description of the need to separate waste for effective waste management
and express a good understanding of waste management in general
Remember to use more complex sentence structures, including use of connectives, and appropriate
vocabulary to enrich your sentences
Trang 38
If we drop litter in the playground they will help to make fertiliser.
If supermarkets charge for plastic bags we will only buy what we need.
If we make a shopping list before we go to the shops more students will recycle.
