This book is one of a series of six Each book

s tructures , but l e xical item s , such as common

idiom s, collocations , phrasal verbs and " false

friends " are also tes t ed, i n c reasingly from

intermediate level onward s

The chief advantage of the mu l tiple-choi ce

format is th at it allows t es t s to be

a dmini stered an d corrected relatively quickly

A test in this b ook should not no rmall y

take s tudents l o nger than hal f an hour to

co mplete

These tests are i ntended not on ly to

determine a stud e nt ' s level of knowledge

o proficien cy at a gi ven moment; they are

meant also to be used , at regu lar inter vals

throughout a co urse , as valuable teaching

too ls in their own right The twelve tests

are arranged in three series: test s 1 a - 1 d ,

tests 2a-2d, and tests 3a- 3d Tests 2a - 2d a re

more difficult than tests 1 a - 1 , whi l e tests

3a-3d , based on the complete sy l labus at

this level , are m o re difficult again In other

words, the three seri es are arranged i n order

o f increasing diffi c ult y Withi n each series ,

how e v e r, the tests are o f the same degree

o f diffi cult y This is because eac h test in a

ser i es is composed of q uest ions on the same

same theme The q uestion s w ill be diff er ent eac h time, of course , but the theme wi ll

remain the same A question-by-question

des cripti on of how t h e tests are composed can be found at the end of the book

It goes without saying that students'

e rr o r s should be properly reviewed after

each test Since tests w ithin a series are

thematic al l y simila r , student s will have

sev eral opport unities to avoid repe ating the
