BreezeMex is a Mexican company that specializes in the construction of offshore wind power farms. Recently, they won a contract to develop a wind farm in Bristol, UK. The project is expected to last for two years. Like other international contracts, BreezeMex will send a team of 3 Senior Engineers from Mexico. These engineers have the following goals: • 1. To ensure that the project is implemented within a predetermined amount of time and budget • 2. Managing workers are local workers. The selection process for this project has been completed and a team of three engineers has been identified. These are as follows: Rafael – is a thirtyeight year old engineer with over ten years’ experience of working for BreezeMex. He has already worked on other international assignments; however, these assignments have only been within South America. He is married with two young children and Rafael’s wife runs her own company in Mexico City. Rafael’s family do not plan to accompany him on the assignment. Rafael studied English as a compulsory subject at high school and, later, at university but has not used his English for more than a decade. He has already expressed his worries about being able to communicate in English.

- Olivia – is a twenty-seven year old engineer, originally from Belize, with five years’ experience of working for BreezeMex She has never undertaken an international assignment before Olivia is bilingual in Spanish and English and, during her undergraduate studies, Olivia studied in London for one year Olivia is very excited about returning to the UK She has a partner who works a freelance journalist and he is planning to accompany her on her assignment in the UK
- Julio – originally from Oaxaca in Mexico, is twenty-four and joined BreezeMex eight months ago straight from university Julio graduated from his engineering degree with the equivalent of a UK first-class honours and is regarded within BreezeMex as someone with high potential This UK project is his first major assignment Julio is single and he has never been outside of Mexico Julio studied English at high school, took some English classes at university and enjoys watching
American movies, so he has a good knowledge of basic English However, he has never spoken English with a native English speaker and is worried that he will have difficulties using English in the workplace
Olivia, Julio and Rafael will be leaving for the UK in 3 weeks’ time BreezeMex wants
to support the three engineers in their preparation for the assignment You have been
asked to design a full day training programme entitled ‘Living and Working in the UK’.
The training day is expected to last between 9am and 5pm, with breaks for refreshments and lunch The programme should include a range of different exercises that will give the three individuals a realistic impression of what they should expect when they come to Bristol You should also think about specific information that each engineer will be interested in and where they might find sources of support.
