Our love of fear

Horror stories and films are very popular According* to

John Carpenter, the director of Halloween and The Thing,

we love ‘safe’ fear, we love feeling scared when we know

that the hero of our story is going to win and when the

baddies* are going to lose Bungee jumping is also an

example of ‘safe’ fear because nothing bad is going to

happen in the end Another example is the ‘House of

Horrors’ in theme* parks: we know that nothing bad is

going to happen to us In other words, ‘safe’ fear

gives us a buzz, makes us feel strong emotions,

but in the end we are safe and can relax.

Harry Potter is scary

In some countries, Harry Potter is banned* For example,

Harry Potter’s fourth film, The Goblet of Fire, has a 12

certificate: this means that you have to be 12 and over

to see it This is because there are some really scary

scenes in the film, like the Quidditch invasion of the

Death Eaters.

And a school in California has banned students from

reading Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince because

it is too fictional*.

People, young and old, love reading horror books and watching horror movies* Do you? Do you know why? Let’s find out why horror is fun!

What about you? What makes you scared?

Why we feel fear*

Fear is our natural defence mechanism: we feel fear

when we sense danger A little fear can be a good

emotion because it makes us react* to a dangerous

situation and can protect us from harm* But too much

fear can be a bad emotion because it can stop us from

feeling relaxed So why do so many people love fear?

horror !

Don t look now:

This is a literary* prize from the Horror

Writers’ Association for the best horror stories.

The Association’s founder* was Bram Stoker, the

author of Dracula Harry Potter’s The Order of the

Phoenix, by author J.K Rowling, won the Bram Stoker

Award.
