In 1988, 72 competitors chose more than 20 boat types, representing six countries and created the Great River race
The competitors ranged from teenage boat enthusiasts*
to elderly* sailors The race became popular very quickly and began to attract more and more participants Now, over
2000 competitors race in over
300 boats, competing for one
of the 35 prizes available.
What is The Great River Race
It is a spectacular river
marathon on the River Thames
in London It began in 1988
and has grown to become
one of the most popular boat
races for both professional
and amateur* teams from all
around the world.
The Course
The race begins at 13.20 at Millwall Dock in London A starting cannon is fired and the slowest boats begin the race first, giving them a head-start* The faster boats join the race last so all the teams have a fair chance of winning The boats pass under 10 bridges, including the famous Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge They travel along the river, to Richmond, where the 22 mile (around 35.5 kilometres) race ends.
