History

In 1988, 72 competitors chose more than 20 boat types, representing six countries and created the Great River race

The competitors ranged from teenage boat enthusiasts*

to elderly* sailors The race became popular very quickly and began to attract more and more participants Now, over

2000 competitors race in over

300 boats, competing for one

of the 35 prizes available.

It is a spectacular river

marathon on the River Thames

The Course

The race begins at 13.20 at Millwall Dock in London A starting cannon is fired and the slowest boats begin the race first, giving them a head-start* The faster boats join the race last so all the teams have a fair chance of winning The boats pass under 10 bridges, including the famous Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge They travel along the river, to Richmond, where the 22 mile (around 35.5 kilometres) race ends.
