b) Cách thành lập động từ thêm “-ing” (V-ing)

1) Thông thường chúng ta thêm đuôi -ing sau các động từ.

Ex: watch → watching, do → doing,

2) Các động từ kết thúc bởi đuôi "e", chúng ta bỏ "e" sau đó thêm đuôi "-ing"

Ex: invite → inviting, write → writing,

3) Các động từ kết thức bởi đuôi "ie", chúng ta đổi "ie" thành "y" rồi thêm ing".

Ex: lie - lying, die → dying,

4) Các động từ kết thúc bởi đuôi "ee", chúng ta chỉ cần thêm đuôi "-ing".

Ex: see → seeing

5) Khi một động từ có âm kết thúc ở dạng “phụ âm-nguyên âm-phụ âm”:

- Nếu động từ đó một âm tiết (hay âm tiết đó được nhấn âm khi đọc) thì ta gấp đôi phụ âm cuối rồi khi thêm “-ing” vào.

Ex: stop → stopping; plan → planning; run → running; begin→beginning

- Còn nếu động từ đó không nhấn âm vào âm kết thúc dạng “phụ âm- nguyên âm-phụ âm” khi đọc hay trường hợp phụ âm cuối (phụ âm kết thúc) là h, w, x thì vẫn giữ nguyên động từ đó và thêm "- ing” vào.

Ex: open → opening; visit → visiting

listen → listening; happen → happening; draw → drawing; wax → waxing

2 Động từ chỉ sở thích (Verbs of liking)

- Sau dislike, enjoy, hate, like, prefer để diễn đạt sở thích chung ta dùng danh động từ (động từ thêm -ing).

Ex: She likes drawing

- Các động từ chỉ sở thích (Verbs of liking) theo sau bởi dạng thêm -ing (G) hoặc dạng nguyên mẫu có to (to-infìnitive) của động từ mà không có sự thay đổi về nghĩa Đó là love (yêu, thích), like (thích) prefer (thích hơn) và hate (ghét).

Ex: Trang loves going out with her friends

Trang loves to go out with her friends.

They always prefer stavding in big hotels.

They always prefer to stay in big hotels.

Tuy nhiên trong tiếng Anh của người Anh, like + to-infínitive thường được dùng để diễn tả sự lựa chọn và thói quen; còn like + V-ing được dùng để diễn đạt sở thích.

Ex: On Saturdays, she likes to sleep late.

I like dancing.

MODAL VERBS + REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

 MUST là một động từ khuyết thiếu và chỉ có hình thức hiện tại.

 MUST có nghĩa là "phải" diễn tả một mệnh lệnh hay một sự bắt buộc.

You must drive on the left in London.

 MUST bao hàm một kết luận đương nhiên, một cách giải thích duy nhất hợp lý theo ý nghĩ của người nói.

Are you going home at midnight? You must be mad! You have worked hard all day; you must be tired.

 MUST NOT (MUSTN'T) diễn tả một lệnh cấm.

You mustn’t walk on the grass.

 Khi muốn diễn tả thể phủ định của MUST với ý nghĩa "không cần thiết" người ta sử dụng NEED NOT (NEEDN’T).

Must I do it now? - No, you needn’t Tomorrow will be soon enough.

 CANNOT (CAN’T) được dùng làm phủ định của MUST khi MUST diễn tả ý nghĩa kết luận đương nhiên, một cách giải thích duy nhất hợp lý theo ý nghĩ của người nói như đã đề cập trong điểm 2 trên đây.

If he said that, he must be mistaken If he said that, he can’t be telling the truth.

* Have to

 HAVE TO dùng thay cho MUST trong những hình thức mà MUST không có.

We shall have to hurry if we are going to catch the twelve o’clock train.

 HAVE TO không thể thay thế MUST khi MUST mang ý nghĩa kết luận đương nhiên, một cách giải thích duy nhất hợp lý theo ý nghĩ của người nói như đã đề cập trong điểm 2 trên đây Người ta phải diễn tả bằng những cách khác.

He must be mad (I personally thought that he was mad)

 MUST và HAVE TO đều có thể dùng để diễn tả sự cưỡng bách, bắt buộc (compulsion) Tuy nhiên MUST mang ý nghĩa sự cưỡng bách đến từ người nói trong khi HAVE TO mang ý nghĩa sự cưỡng bách đến từ hoàn cảnh bên ngoài (external circumstances)

You must do what I tell you Passengers must cross the line by the bridge (Lệnh của Cục Đường Sắt)

Passengers have to cross the line by the bridge (Vì không còn đường nào khác)

* Ought to

- OUGHT TO là một động từ khuyết thiếu chỉ có thì Hiện tại (simple present) Nó có nghĩa là

"nên", gần giống với should Trong hầu hết các trường hợp OUGHT TO có thể được thay thế bằng should They ought to (should) pay the money He ought to (should) be ashamed of himself.

tomorrow, next Tuesday

Our team ought to win the match tomorrow.

 OUGHT NOT TO HAVE + past participle diễn tả một sự không tán đồng về một hành động đã làm trong quá khứ.

2 Reflexive pronouns: yourself, myself, themselves…

a) Các REFLEXSIVE PRONOUNS (đại từ phản thân) bao gồm:

You - yourselves (số nhiều)

They - themselves (số nhiều)

Chúng ta dùng reflexive pronouns (đại từ phản thân) khi subject (chủ từ) và object (túc từ) cùng chi một:

• Tom cut himself while he was shaving (không nói:” Tom cut him”

• I don’t want you to pay for me I’ll pay for myself.

• The old lady sat in a corner talking to herself.

• Don’t get angry Control yourself.

• If you want more to eat, help yourselves.

• The party was great We enjoy ourselves very much.

Nhưng chúng ta khong dùng reflexive pronouns sau bring/take something with…

• I went out and take an umbrella with me.

b) chúng ta không dùng reflexives pronouns … sau feel/relax/concentrate:

• I feel great after having a swim (không nói “I feel myself great”)

• You must try and concentrate.

• It’s good to relax.

Chúng ta thường không dùng reflexive pronouns sau wash/dress/shave:

• I got up, shaved, washed, and dressed (không nói “shaved myself…”)

Nhưng chúng ta nói:

• I dried myself

Hãy lưu ý đến cách dùng meet:

• What time shall we meet? (không nói “meet ourselves/ meet us”)

c) hãy xem sự khác biệt giữa –selves và each other:

• Tom and Ann stood in front of the mirror and look at themselves

Nhưng: Tom looked at Ann and Ann looked at Tom They looked at each other.

Bạn cũng có thể dùng one another thay cho each other:

• How long have you and Bill known each other (hoặc one another)

• Sue and Ann don’t like each other (Hoặc one another)

d) Chúng ta cũng có thể dùng myself…theo cách khác.

Ví dụ:

• Who repaired your bicycle for you? Nobody, I repaired it myself

Trang 19

• Let’s paint the house ourselves It will be much cheaper.

• The film itself wasn’t very good But I liked the music.

• I don’t think John will get the job, John himself doesn’t think he will get the job (hoặc

“John doesn’t think he will get it himself”)

Đây là một số thành ngữ dùng với reflexive pronouns:

- believe in yourself (dĩ nhiên tùy chủ từ, ở đây dùng yourself làm thí dụ tượng trưng thôi.)

- blame yourself

- cut yourself

- enjoy yourself

- feel sorry for yourself

- help yourself (đây là câu mời ăn uống thân mật, có thể xem tương đương như câu "ăn tự nhiên nhé”)

 Everyone has their individual leisure time Children should feel free to do what they like.

 Being free to do what they like means that they have more opportunity to create something new.

 Parents can give some useful advice so that teenagers can use it properly.

Suggestion writing

In my opinion, teenagers should not be decided the way they use their spare time by parents Some of following reasons will prove it Firstly, we all know that everyone has their individual leisure time Children should feel free to do what they like Secondly, being free to do what they like means that they have more opportunity to create something new There won’t be any limits in their mind no longer and they can develop naturally They can attain great success and have a happy life Although parents shouldn’t decide how their children spend their spare time, they can give some useful advice so that teenagers can use it properly In addition, parents should remind their children if they are in wrong way This is the most ultimate way to encourage teenagers to develop further In summary, those above reasons have led me to conclude that parents should let their children do what they like in their free time but do not forget to follow them to make sure that their activities are best fit to moral standards

Date of teaching: 19& 20/10/2020

COMPARATIVE FORMS OF ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS

+ WRITING

I OBJECTIVES.

By the end of this lesson, students can do exercises on comparative forms of adjectives and

adverbs; they can also write a description of 60-80 words of a room in the house using word cues

I Adjectives and Adverbs:

Một tính từ bao giờ cũng bổ nghĩa cho một danh từ và chỉ danh từ Nó đứng ngay trước danh từ

đó Trong tiếng Anh chỉ có một danh từ duy nhất đứng sau danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa đó là: galore

(nhiều, phong phú, dồi dào).

Ví dụ:

There are errors galore in the final exam.

- Một trạng từ bao giờ cũng bổ nghĩa cho:

+ Một động từ - một tính từ - và một trạng từ khác.

Ví dụ:

He runs very fast.

verb adv adv

She is terribly beautiful.

Adv adj

1) chỉ địa điểm (here, there, at school ),

2) chỉ thời gian,

3) chỉ phương tiện hành động,

4) chỉ tình huống hành động.

+ Một trạng từ không bao giờ được đứng xen vào giữa động từ và tân ngữ.

Ví dụ: I have terribly a headache (Câu sai vì phó từ đứng xen giữa động từ và tân ngữ )

+ Nếu trong câu chỉ có trạng từ chỉ thời gian thì nó thể đứng lên đầu câu.

Trang 33

Ví dụ: In 1975, I graduated but I didn’t find a job.

+ Các trạng từ chỉ tần suất (always, sometimes ) thường bao giờ cũng đứng trước động từ chính

khi nó là động từ hành động, nhưng bao giờ cũng đứng sau động từ to be.

Ví dụ: - They have often visited me recently.

- He always comes in time.

Nhưng: The president is always in time.

II Degrees of comparison:

1 Equal comparisons: (equal degree)

* Form:

(+) S1 + be/ V + as + adj / adv + as + S 2 + aux

E.g: He is as old as my father.

He drives as carefully as I (do).

Mai is as beautiful as her mother.

(-) S1 + be not / Aux verb+ as/so + adj/adv + as + S2 + aux

E.g: He is not as/so old as my father.

He doesn’t drive as/so carefully as I (do).

* Note:

- Đại từ làm chủ ngữ luôn được sử dụng sau “as”: You are as old as he

- We use equal degree when we want to emphasize how many times this object is more than that

one

E.g: Her husband is twice as old as she (is).

- ý “bằng nhau, như nhau” có thể được thay thế bằng cách diễn đạt khác:

S + V + the same + (noun) + as + noun/ pronoun

Ex: My house is as high as his = My house is the same height as his

Tom is as old as Mary = Tom and Mary are the same age

Adj noun

Heavy/ light weight

wide/ marrow width

deep/ shallow depth

long/ short length

big/ small size

old age

2 Comparatives:

* Short adjectives and adverbs:

S 1 + be/ V + adj/ adv (short) + er + than + noun/ pronoun

E.g: You are thinner than he (is).

He runs faster than I (do).

Today is hotter than yesterday.

I am three years older than you are.

* Long adjectives and adverbs:

S 1 + V + more + adj/ adv (long) + than + noun/ pronoun

E.g: He is more intelligent than I (am).

He drives more carefully than I (do).

- L ưu ý:

- Đằng sau trạng từ so sánh như than và as phải là đại từ nhân xưng chủ ngữ, không được phép là

đại từ nhân xưng tân ngữ (lỗi cơ bản).

Trang 34

John’s grades are higher than his sister’s.

Today is hotter than yesterday.

This chair is more comfortable than the other.

He speaks Spanish more fluently than I.

He visits his family less frequently than she does.

This year’s exhibit is less impressive than last year’s.

- Để nhấn mạnh, ta có thể thêm much, a lot, far, a bit, a little vào trước so sánh hơn

Eg: Let’s go by car It’s much cheaper.

Her illness was far more serious than we thought at first.

- So sánh kém hơn: S + V + less + Adj/ Adv + than + noun/ pronoun

Eg: This book is less difficult than that one.

He ran less quickly than Bill.

3 Superlatives:

S + be/V + the + adj/ adv (short) + est + in (danh từ số ớt)

the most + long adjective/ adverb + of (danh từ số nhiều)

the least + adjective/ adverb

E.g: Nam is the tallest student in my class.

Cheetah runs the fastest in the world.

Nga is the most intelligent of all the students.

Those shoes are the least expensive of all.

* Qui tắc thêm “er/ est” vào sau tính từ:

- Tính từ một âm tiết tận cùng là 1 phụ âm đơn (trừ : w, x, z) đứng trước một nguyên âm đơn thì gấp đôi phụ âm cuối + er/ est : big – bigger- biggest

- Tính từ 2 âm tiết, tận cùng là : y, le, et, ow, er ta biến đổi như tính từ ngắn : clever – cleverer – cleverest

Happy – happier – happiest quiet – quieter – quietest

- Tính từ 1 âm tiết tận cùng là e: chỉ thêm ‘r’/ ‘st’ :

- Tính từ 1 âm tiết kết thúc bằng: phụ âm +y : đổi y thành i + er/ est

Dry – drier/ driest

* Iregular adjectives/ adverbs

4 Comparions with nouns

Danh từ cũng có thể được dùng làm so sánh trong cấu trúc so sánh bằng, hơn hoặc kém

+ S 1 + V + as many/ much + N as noun/ pronoun

S 1 + negative V as/ so few/ little +

E.g He earns as much money as I do.

Trang 35

I don’t have as/ so many friends as he does.

+ S1 + V + more/ fewer/ less + N + than noun/ pronoun

E.g He has collected more stamps than I have.

I have collected fewer stamps than he has.

5 So sánh gia bội (so sánh gấp nhiều lần)

Là loại so sánh gấp r ưỡi, gấp đôi, gấp ba Cấu trúc này không dùng cho so sánh hơn, kém mà dùng cho

noun pronoun

Bội số có thể bao gồm: half, twice, three times, four times ….

Thisdictionary costs twice as much as the other one.

At the clambake last week, Fred ate three times as many oysters as Barney.

Jerome has half as many records now as I had last year.

- Ta phải xác định danh từ số ít hay số nhiều để dùng much hay many

6 Double comparisons:

6.1 Càng ngày ….càng; mỗi lúc một hơn

+ Short adjective/ adverb: adj/ adv + er and adj/ adv + er

+ Long adj/ adv: more and more + adj/ adv

Children spend more and more time watching TV.

She is getting fatter and fatter.

She becomes more and more beautiful/ He is more and more studious.

6.2 Càng ngày càng it …; càng ngày càng kém

Với tính từ ngắn hay tính từ dài, ta theo công thức dưới đây:

Less and less + adj/ adv

Eg: My father becomes less and less strong.

6.3 Càng …thì càng: (so sánh cấp tiến)

+ short adj/ adv:

The adj/ adv + er S – V, the adj/ adv + er S-V

Ex: The richer he gets, the weaker he is

The darker it gets, the colder it is.

The sooner you take your medicine, the better you will feel.

The more you study, the smarter you will become.

+ Long adj/ adv: The more + adj/ adv S-V, the more + adj/ adv S-V

Ex: The more beautiful she is, the more miserable her husband is.

- Với động từ: the more……., the more ……

Ex: The more I hate him, the more he loves me.

The more she sings, the more I look at her.

Note: Nhiều khi 2 vế không cùng một loại tính từ ngắn hay dài mà lẫn lộn nhau.

Ex: The more she smiles, the more graceful she is.

6.4 Càng ớt …., thỡ càng ớt; càng kộm…, thỡ càng kộm

Với tính từ ngắn cũng như tính từ dài:

The less + adj …., the less + adj ….

Ex: The less difficult the lesson is, the less hard-working students are.

- Với động từ: The less …., the less….

Trang 36

Ex: The less I live with him, the less I like him.
