SECTION 3: Reading Comprehension (30 marks, 2 marks/answer)

Tesla steals GM’s crown as most valuable US carmaker

In April, Tesla slipped past General Motors to become the most valuable US car company, as Wall Street bet that Elon Musk’s lofty ambitions would

eventually propel his small-scale electric carmaker ahead of even the country’s biggest manufacturers

Despite producing fewer than 1 per cent as many vehicles as rolled off GM’s production lines last year, Tesla recently had a stock market value of $51bn, a whisker above GM’s $50.9bn

Tesla has also racked up $1.9bn of losses over the past three years, compared tothe $23bn of net profits reported by GM over the same period

But the passing of the stock market baton, at least for now, reflects Wall

Street’s growing confidence that Mr Musk will be the first to push electric cars into the mainstream

Investors have bet heavily on the success of Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3, due

to go into production this summer, which represents its first attempt at a market vehicle — even though GM has beaten it to market with a similar vehicle of its own, the Chevrolet Bolt

mass-“Market cap doesn’t mean a lot Tesla investors are betting on the promise for the future,” said Michelle Krebs, auto analyst at Autotrader.com who noted thatthe stock market treats GM and Ford, whom Tesla has also surpassed in market capitalisation, as industrial companies while Tesla is treated as a tech stock

“The real test for Tesla comes when it launches the Model 3, the high-volume, mainstream-priced electric vehicle that is supposed to help the company

achieve profitability,” she said

Tesla had global deliveries of 76,000 cars last year, compared with its bigger rival’s global sales of 10m in 2016, and Ford’s 6.6m

Trang 18

A recent GM statement puts the Detroit carmaker’s global market share at 10.8 per cent for 2016 Tesla’s global share scarcely registers, at less than a tenth of

1 per cent for the same period

News that a Silicon Valley start-up had become the largest US car company by market valuation is a significant milestone for an industry that has been trying

to accelerate its move away from more than a century of reliance on internal combustion engines

For investors, Tesla is a bet on new forms of mobility, from electric cars to driving vehicles, as well as a wager on the centre of gravity of the US motor industry moving from Detroit to Silicon Valley

self-The latest leg in Tesla’s stock market rise followed news that it had delivered 25,000 cars during the first quarter of this year, higher than analysts had

expected

At about the same time, the traditional car industry registered disappointing USsales figures for March, underlining market concerns that established

carmakers are running out of steam

Notes: lofty (para 1) = high , a whisker (para 2) = a very small amount ,

racked up (para 3) = gradually got more, the passing of the stock market baton (para 4) = moving from one player in the game to another, leg (para 12) = stage, running out of steam (para 13) = slowing down, losing energy and power

Part 2:

Can you give us an example of how you’ve helped a company with its

organization? I recently did a major piece of work for a very large, global American company that was organized by function So Manufacturing had responsibility for all the plants around the world, Marketing ran all the brands

in every country It was a very efficient organization, but it wasn’t very good at responding to the local markets, and so they decided that they wanted to move

to a geographically based organization So we had to figure out, first of all, what were the right geographies - was every country a separate geography or are we going to put some together? What are you going to do for Europe as a whole, as well as what you are going to do for Germany and for Spain? Um, so

we did a lot of looking at how the business operated, where products were made, where they were shipped to, how competitors were organized And we also had to spend a lot of time thinking about whether we needed regional organizations or whether every single business unit would report back to the headquarters, er, in the US
