ORDERING AND MATCHING QUESTIONS
>
Ordering questions and matching questions require a general understanding
of the lecture or at least a major section of the lecture These two types of questions are asked only about the lectures and academic discussions, not about
conversations
(A) Ordering Questions
Ordering questions require you to put four (sometimes three) events or steps ina process into the correct order Anytime a speaker presents events in chronological order (the order in which they occurred), a biography of a person, the steps of a process, or a ranking of things according to their importance, there will probably
be an ordering question Listen for time words (years, dates) and words that signal
a sequence
before that afterwards first earlier than next second
As you take notes, use numbers to keep track of the order of events or steps in the sequence You can circle these numbers to make them easier to find
Remember: The order in which the speaker mentions events or steps is not nec- essarily the order in which they happened
To answer ordering questions on the computer, first click on one of the four words, phrases, or sentences in the top half of the screen and then drag and drop it into the appropriate box (labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4) in the lower half of the screen The expression from the top will then appear in the box that you dropped it into Do this for all four boxes If you change your mind, click on the answer that you wish
to change and your original choice will disappear from the box
You need to figure out the correct positions for only three answers because the fourth answer must go in the remaining blank
Sample Item 1 Here is a section of a presentation from the Listening Preview Test and an ordering question about it Sample notes on this section of the lecture are also provided

Trang 5Lesson 13: Ordering and Matching Questions 341
The speaker mentions the space probe Magellan first This was launched in
1990 He then goes on to mention the first probe sent to Venus, which was
launched in 1962 He next discusses the Soviet Union's probe Venera 4, which was
launched in 1967 The last probe he mentions is the Venus Pioneer, launched in
1978 Except for the first probe, Magellan, the speaker lists the probes in chrono-
logical order Magellan is actually the most recent Therefore, the correct order is A
Mariner 2, D Venera 4, B Venus Pioneer 2, and C Magellan
You will probably see one or two ordering questions in each Listening Section
(B) Matching Questions
Matching questions require you to connect three words, phrases, or sentences with
three categories somehow related to them If the lecturer or speaker lists three or
more general concepts and then gives definitions, examples, characteristics, or
uses of those concepts, you will probably see a matching question
As you take notes, you should normally list specific characteristics of a general
concept under that concept You can then use your notes to answer the questions
To answer a matching question on the computer, click on one of the three
expressions in the top half of the screen and then drag and drop it into the box
below the expression that you think is related to it That word or phrase will then
appear in the box you dropped it into Do this for all three boxes If you change
your mind, click on the item again and the choice will disappear
For these questions, you really need to find only two correct choices because
the third choice must obviously go in the remaining empty box

Taiga: 3 sub-zones
1 open forest—needle-leaf (= evergrn = connif.)
small, far apart sim to tundra w/ few sm trees
2 closed forest—bigger needle-leaf, closer together
feels like real forest not much var’ty _ doz spec
3 mixed zone—even bigger trees some broadlf (=decid.) trees esp bu
rivers, etc
e.g larch, aspen
CE more like temperate forests
Sample Question:
The professor discussed three sub-zones of the taiga Match each sub-zone with its characteristic
rac
B Closed forest C Mixed forest
The professor describes open forest as having only needle-leaf trees that grow far apart, so choice A should be placed in the third box He describes closed forest
as having needle-leaf trees larger than those in an open forest He says it feels more like a real forest and lacks variety Choice B should therefore be placed in the first box The professor says that mixed forest contains even bigger trees and some broad-leaf trees, especially along rivers and creeks Therefore, you should place C
in the second box (Besides, this is the only empty box, so you have to put choice
C here!) You will probably see one or two matching questions per Listening Section

EXERCISE 13.1
Focus: Answering ordering and matching questions about lectures and academic
discussions
DIRECTIONS: Listen to the lectures and discussions and the questions about them
You may take notes on the lectures in the space allowed in the book or on another
sheet of paper As you take notes, try to decide what ordering and matching ques-
tions might be asked about the lectures You may use your notes to help you
answer the questions
