In international trade, the movement of goods between countries has led toimports and exports being transported across borders Therefore, for the goods toreach the buyer, the goods have to go through a series of stages such as: import andexport customs clearance, preparation of documents, hiring of means of transport,loading and unloading onto means All these jobs are called forwarding Freightforwarding service is a commercial activity whereby traders organize one or morejobs, including receipt of goods, transportation, warehousing, warehousing,customs clearance, other paperwork, and packaging, marking, delivery or otherservices related to the goods as agreed upon with the customer for remuneration.(Article 233, Commercial Law 2005)
Previously, the delivery could have been done by the shipper (the exporter),the consignee (importer) or the carrier However, along with the development ofinternational trade, the division of international labor with the increasing level andscope of specialization, forwarding has also gradually been specialized, byorganizations and businesses Professional forwarding team conducted andforwarding has officially become a profession In short: "Forwarding service is aservice related to the transport process to organize the transport of goods from theplace of receipt to the place of delivery"

1.1.2 Scope of forwarding services
Except for a number of cases where the shipper / consignee himself wants toparticipate in any of the procedures and documents on his own, normally, theforwarder on his behalf takes care of the process of transporting goods through thestages The forwarder can do the service directly or through the subcontractors oragents they hire, the forwarder also uses their agents abroad These servicesinclude:
1.1.2.1 On behalf of the shipper (exporter)

1.2 General overview of freight forwarding by air
1.2.1 Concept of air freight forwarding
Air freight forwarding is a collection of operations related to the air transportprocess to carry out the movement of goods from the place of delivery to the place
of receipt of goods Air freight forwarding is essentially an organization of thetransport process and resolving procedures related to the process of transportinggoods by air Currently air freight forwarding is usually provided by air freightagents and freight forwarders
Air cargo agent is an intermediary between a carrier (airlines) and a cargoowner (exporter or importer) When it comes to air freight agents, it is often calledFIATA agent because this is the most standard agent FIATA Freight Agent is a
Trang 16forwarding agent registered by the International Air Transport Association,appointed and authorized by airlines that are members of FIATA.
Air freight forwarder: Is a person who provides air freight forwardingservices The freight forwarder may not be a FIATA agent or not a FIATA agent,the service that the consignee usually does is mainly the consolidation service
1.2.2 Characteristics of air transport
Air transport routes are mostly straight lines connecting two transport points
- The speed of air transport is quite high, the speed of operation is high, thetransportation time is fast, 27 times higher than sea freight, 10 times more than cartransport and 8 times train transport
- Air transport is safer than other means of transport, suitable for high-value, perishable goods and rare and precious goods
- Air transport always requires the use of high technology, perfect technicalequipment, transport facilities such as airports, radio control stations, meteorology,etc elements constituting air freight rates
- Air transport provides more standard services than other modes of transport
- Air transport simplifies procedures and documents compared to other modes of transport
Besides the above advantages, air transport also has the following limitations:
- Air freight is high
- Air transport is not suitable for transporting bulky goods, goods with large volume or low value
Trang 17- Air transport requires large investment in technical facilities as well as training of human resources.

Trang 25CHAPTER III – CURRENT SITUATION OF INTERNATIONAL FREIGHT FORWARDING ACTIVITIES OF DELTA INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD.
AT NOI BAI DURING THE LAST 3 YEARS
3.1 Result of freight forwarding activities
3.1.1 Types of goods are transported
Not all goods are allowed to be transported by air Goods transported by airare obliged to comply with the regulations on air transport of countries, places oforigin and destination as well as the general rules and regulations of nationalaviation organizations and associations like IATA, FIATA, ICAO, but in general,freight forwarding by air has the following characteristics:
- Usually high value goods, common goods;
- Request fast shipping time;
- Need high safety during transportation;
- Not bulky, easy to load/unload;
- Goods are packed in accordance with the standard of air transport;
- Goods must be labeled fully, clearly and appropriately;
- Goods with valid documents attached (if required)
Delta's major and longtime customers are Zara and CT Wearnes, so most
of the delivered goods are fashion and automotive components and parcels with service packages:
- Door to door (receive from the sender and deliver to the recipient)
- Door to airport (receive from the sender and deliver to airport of destination)
- Airport to airport (normal delivery)
Trang 263.1.2 Volume of export and import goods
Table 3.1 The volume growth of goods transported by air at Noi Bai airport over the last 3 years
(Source: adjusted from data provided by exploring section, Delta Company)
In order to have a clearer examination, I converted the table 2.1 into the followingchart:
Weight (ton) Number of package
Graph 3.1 Volume growth of goods transported by air at Noi Bai airport over thelast 3 years
From the chart, it can be seen clearly that there is an upward trend of goodstransported by the air over the last 3 years in both weight and number of packages
In detail, the number of packages rose steadily during the period, about 9.8% and
Trang 27increased slightly from 2017 to 2018 by 63 tons before having a sharp increasefrom 2018 to 2019 by 186 tons These growths implied that the demand of aircargo
26
Trang 28transport at Noi Bai was getting higher and higher and the company’s forwarding activities were also being promoted.
3.1.3 Revenue and profit growth
Table 3.2 Growth of revenue and profit from freight forwarding activities of aircargo over the years
The company's revenue growth is proportional to the increase in the amount
of goods it has imported/exported over the years Looking at either the table orgraph, the highlight is that the revenue in 2019 is much higher than the number in
Trang 292018 while the total cost has not changed much, showing that Delta has tried toexpand its business and find looking for cost reduction solutions DeltaInternational Co., Ltd is currently the agency that has signed contracts to transportgoods by air in Vietnam of many airlines Because of the priority policy on prices,routes and other preferential policies, Delta has always set itself a plan to allocate
on airlines over the years In order to maintain its position and establish anincreasingly close relationship with partners on mutually beneficial basis, Delta isconstantly exploiting both nominated and self-exploiting cargos to provide enoughcargo on the main routes of airlines This is very essential in the context of thefreight forwarding market is becoming more and more competitive today
3.1.4 Freight policy
3.1.4.1 Basis of freight
Air freight is calculated on a weight basis, if it is a heavy cargo If it is light,bulky goods, then calculated by volume But if it is a rare commodity, the freightbasis is the value of the goods Rates depend on: frequency of carriage,competition between airlines, type and weight of freight, value of goods,requirements for loading and unloading facilities
Delta charging formula:
Freight in air transport is stipulated in the unified tariff International AirTransport Association (IATA) has regulations on rules, ways of charging
The charge calculation formula is as follows:
Air freight = Unit price x Chargeable weightUnit price and surcharges apply depending on the airline regulations Chargeableweight equals actual weight if actual weight is greater than volumetric/dimensional
Trang 30weight and vice versa The formula to calculate volumetric weight according to therules of IATA:
In Vietnam, the units are expressed in centimeter (cm) and kilogram (kg)
Or convert 1m3 = 167kg
If the unit is inch, then convert 1 inch = 1.54kg In addition, the forwardingcompanies sometimes also apply their own formula to calculate the volumetricweight
3.1.4.2 Types of freight
Table 2.3 Tariff (currency: VND)
