Admission
Information
Thank you for your interest in the college of nursing.
We want to work with you to make the application process as manageable as possible Here are some important tips about our application process:
1 Our application is self-managed We require that you submit your completed
application—with all supplemental materials—at the same time, in the same envelope Please do not send transcripts, recommendations, etc., under separate cover.
2 Please do not use binders, covers, or plastic sleeves to send us your application
We need to make copies of it for the various committees that will review it There is
no need for fancy packaging—we are most impressed by strong academics, powerful personal statements, and amazing recommendations.
3 Speaking of recommendations—our doctoral and master’s programs require them.
We do not provide, or require, special recommendation forms We do, however, want professional and/or academic letters of recommendation typewritten and on letter-head Be sure to give your recommender enough time to write the recommendation and have him or her give it to you in a sealed envelope and on institutional letterhead Remember that most recommenders are very busy people We suggest that you start this process early.
4 Use your personal statement to give us an honest representation of who you are,
why you want to enter the program/specialty and pursue a career as an advanced practice nurse We definitely want to be sure you can write, but we also want to make sure the program we offer is the best match for you as a potential graduate student.
5 Don’t take anything for granted Read the instructions, visit our Web site, and
double-check everything Take charge of the process, get everything in by the deadline, and then anticipate the decision of the Admissions Committee If you include a self-addressed, stamped postcard, we will return it to you to verify that we received your application Our goal is to help you submit an outstanding application—so work with
us, and together we can make it happen We wish you the best.

Application
Deadlines
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all materials are in the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions by the appropriate deadline All deadlines listed are “in-office” deadlines, not postmark deadlines It
is always to the candidate’s best advantage to apply early
Should any of the dates listed below fall on a weekend, the in-office deadline will be the next working day

Security number (if available) on each page
3 A copy of your most recent résumé.

each postsecondary school attended These transcripts must be sent to you to be included in your completed
application packet (Do not open the transcripts when
they arrive—we must receive them in sealed envelopes.)
Please do not send transcripts under separate cover as this will greatly delay the processing of your application
Official transcripts that are stamped “issued to student,”
but remain in sealed envelopes, are considered official by the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions
6 A check or money order (please do not send cash) for
the $75.00 nonreturnable application fee payable to “New York University.” All checks or money orders must be drawn on a U.S bank and in U.S dollars Other forms
of payment, including credit cards and bank transfers, are not acceptable
7 Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):

be rendered Please arrange to have your official TOEFL scores sent to us before the deadline Our TOEFL test code is 1617
8 Graduate Record Examination (GRE): required for all doctoral applicants only An unofficial copy of your
latest GRE scores must be included with your completed application packet Please arrange to have your official GRE scores sent to us before the appropriate deadline The College of Nursing GRE test code is 2441

master’s and advanced certificate study must be written
by a master’s prepared nurse who provides direct super -vision Reference letters in support of doctoral study must be written by doctorally prepared faculty members, and at least one should be from a doctorally prepared nurse Please see the listings in the Directory of Graduate Programs section of this booklet for additional informa-tion on your program Please have all recommendainforma-tions sent to you in sealed envelopes to be forwarded, unopened,
to our office with your completed application for admis-sion Because all full-time doctoral candidates are auto-matically considered for the graduate and teaching assistantships (GA/TAs), the recommendations you sub-mit with your application for admission may also serve
as your recommendations for the GA/TAs
10 A postage-paid, self-addressed postcard: optional,
for domestic applicants only We will return it to you verifying receipt of your application
11 All programs reserve the right to request
recommenda-tions or other materials at a future date, if deemed necessary for admission or financial aid consideration

for International
Applicants
www.nyu.edu/oiss
The College of Nursing encourages applications from international students We offer a diversity of programs that attract master’s and doctoral candidates from all over the world
1 We encourage you to apply early Because additional
mailing time and processing are required for interna-tional credentials, you should have all application materials in our office by February 1 for the fall semester and by November 1 for the spring semester
2 You must have the equivalent of an American
bache-lor’s degree to be considered Two (2) transcripts in the original language as well as two (2) English translations are required to be submitted with your application If your academic credentials are not in English and/or are from a foreign school with a grading system not based on
a 4.0 overall GPA, we strongly suggest that you obtain an evaluation and translation This is a paid service available
to you from Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc
(ECE), and World Education Services (WES) We require evaluation reports that identify the United States equiva-lents of educational qualifications earned in other coun-tries, including subject-by-subject GPA and degree
equivalence Visit www.wes.org or www.ece.org for more
information
3 The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is mandatory for all applicants whose native language is
not English and who did not receive a bachelor’s degree
at an English-speaking college or university Include a copy of your TOEFL score report with your application
The TOEFL cannot be waived, and the official scores must be in our office by February 1 for the fall semester
or by November 1 for the spring semester The College of Nursing looks for a paper-based TOEFL score range of
550 to 600, a computer-based TOEFL score range of
230 to 250, or an Internet-based score range of 88 to 100 for consideration Include a copy of your TOEFL score report with your application The College of Nursing
TOEFL test code is 1617 See the Web site at www.toefl.org
for registration information
4 Regardless of the TOEFL score, all accepted applicants
whose native language is not English are required to take
a placement examination, for an additional fee, at New York University’s American Language Institute (ALI) on arrival Depending on your performance on this exami-nation, you may be required to take noncredit remedial English course work before or while taking regular aca-demic course work Such remedial course work may lengthen the time and expense of graduate study and should therefore be taken into account by students and their funding sources
5 The College of Nursing does not offer scholarship
assistance to international students in master’s degree programs Non-U.S citizens seeking tuition assistance through loans should check the NYU Web site at
www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/international.php for
additional information on loan opportunities open

Department, Office of the Professions, for Registered Professional Nurse licensure
(www.op.nysed.gov/nurse.htm).
Licensure (www.op.nysed.gov/nurseforms.htm)

of your completion of an NYS-approved two-hour
course in child abuse identification and reporting.
One other requirement for New York licensure
is a course in infection control for health care
professionals, which is not necessary for
comple-tion of the applicacomple-tion, but would be requested from you by any New York institution you work with in the future Through the experience of international student applicants in the past, we rec-ommend Nursing Spectrum’s Self-Study Module
(www.nursing.com/ce) to be the most feasible way
to complete these two New York licensure require-ments The most affordable approach with Nursing Spectrum’s Self-Study Module would be to register
for the Unlimited CE Program
B Apply for verification of your education and
licen-sure/registration credentials for the New York State
Education Department with the Commission on
Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS)

of 180 days Once verified, your credentials will be forwarded to and evaluated by the New York State Education Department as part of your licensure application
C Upon processing of both applications, you will
receive authorization to take the NCLEX exam, known as Authorization to Test (ATT) To register to take the NCLEX exam, set up a Web
account for NCLEX testing with Pearson VUE
(www.vue.com/nclex).
In general, please allow six months for the entire licensure application process, with the CGFNS cre-dential verification application requiring the most time You must complete the licensure process prior to beginning your graduate program
