In May 2011, the seminar "Vietnam Sports and the Goals for 2020" established a clear definition of sports in the country and identified key sports for development This initiative highlighted ten primary sports and twenty-two secondary sports, with nine of the primary sports being Olympic events that received special emphasis Notably, table tennis is among the ten primary sports, ranking highly among ASEAN countries, and is also a popular traditional sport in Vietnam.

Nghiên cứu lý thuyết về các yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến sự phát triển thể thao thành tích cao ở Việt Nam còn rất hạn chế, nổi bật có các bài viết như của NGUYEN ANH MINH (2009) trong "Nghiên cứu các yếu tố và cơ chế động lực phát triển võ thuật Việt Nam", phân tích các yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến sự phát triển võ thuật Việt Nam, bao gồm mức độ phát triển kinh tế, rào cản tư tưởng truyền thống, hạn chế của hệ thống kinh tế kế hoạch, phân mảnh trong tổ chức, thiếu hụt tài nguyên võ thuật, thiếu hướng dẫn khoa học trong huấn luyện, và mức độ thị trường thấp Ông đề xuất các yếu tố thúc đẩy sự phát triển như cải cách, đổi mới công nghệ, thúc đẩy khoa học và cạnh tranh thị trường, cùng với nhiều giải pháp bền vững cho võ thuật Việt Nam NGUYEN THANH TUNG (2010) trong "Nghiên cứu các yếu tố chính ảnh hưởng đến sự phát triển điền kinh Việt Nam" đã phân tích lịch sử và hiện trạng phát triển điền kinh, chỉ ra các yếu tố hạn chế như yếu tố xã hội, hệ thống quản lý, môi trường chính trị, đầu tư kinh tế, vấn đề lập pháp thể thao và phát triển thị trường sự kiện điền kinh.
