The diagram shows the seven most important stages in the making of honey by bees The process begins with the honey bees building a hive, and then finishes when the honey is ready to be collected and used

Firstly, the bees have to build a container This is called a hive and it consists of many individually built cells Next, the bees leave the hive in order to search for flowers When they find a suitable flower, they collect the nectar from it, which is used to make honey

The nectar is then taken back to the hive where the production process can begin First, it is put into cells Then, following this, the nectar must be cooled down In order to do this, the bees fan the nectar-filled cells with their wings As a result, the nectar loses its water content and then finally, the honey is produced (150 words)

Firstly, the number of student accommodation buildings has been increased in number and size A previous accommodation block south of the lake has been destroyed and replaced by a new building for students, which includes shops and offices In addition, the teaching facilities have been extended The previous single teaching block has been changed into a block only for arts subjects and there is a new building for the sciences to the north of the campus This has replaced the old university offices The lawn and outside seating area which were next to the lake have been removed The lake, however, has remained and is still the central point of the campus (152 words)

This diagram shows that there are a number of processes involved in the commercial production of frozen fish pies The main ingredients consist of fresh salmon, peas and sauce, with sliced potatoes, and they are prepared separately The potatoes, which may have been delivered up to a month in advance, are cleaned, peeled and cut into slices The slices are boiled and then chilled before being stored until needed The preparation of the fish is more labour intensive than the preparation of the potatoes Within twelve hours of being delivered to the factory, the fresh fish is cooked by being steamed with lemon juice and salt Then the skin and bones are removed by hand and disposed of, before a visual inspection takes place

After this, the pies are assembled in microwaveable containers Peas and sauce, which have also been prepared, are added to the fish and then the pie is covered with a layer of cooked potato slices The pies are then wrapped and frozen At this point they are ready for dispatch, or they may be stored at the factory before being dispatched (185 words)

The diagram illustrates how aluminium cans are recycled First, the cans need to be taken to special collection centres instead of being thrown away with the normal refuse The cans are collected from here and taken to a factory where they are first sorted and then cleaned Next, the cans are shredded and crushed in a special machine

The metal is then heated to a high enough temperature to allow the aluminium to melt It is then rolled out flat to a thickness of between 2.5mm and 6 mm, depending on what it is going to be used for The aluminium is now ready to be recycled into new packaging, such as drink containers Finally, the new cans are delivered to a soft drinks factory where they are filled The cans can now

be sold to the public and reused In the UK, 74 per cent of all aluminium cans that are sold are recycled (155 words)

Most consumer goods go through a series of stages before they emerge as finished products ready for sale

Raw materials and manufactured components comprise the initial physical input in the manufacturing process Once obtained, these are stored for later assembly But assembly first depends upon the production planning stage, where it is decided how and in what quantities the stored materials will be processed to create sufficient quantities of finished goods The production planning stage itself follows the requirements of the goods' design stage that proceeds from extensive research After assembly, the products are inspected and tested to maintain quality control

l Those units that pass the inspection and testing stages are then packaged, despatched and offered for sale in retail outlets The level of sales, which is the end point of the manufacturing process, helps determine production planning

A product's design is not only the result of product research, but is also influenced by testing and market research If the testing stage (after assembly and inspection) reveals unacceptable problems

in the finished product, then adjustments will have to be made to the product's design Similarly, market research, which examines the extent and nature of the demand for products, has the role of guiding product design to suit consumer demands which may change with time Market research, while influenced by product sales, also serves to foster future sales by devising suitable advertising for the goods

Thus the reality of consumer goods manufacturing goes well beyond a simple linear production process (250 words)

The Hawaiian island chain, in the centre of the Pacific Ocean, is approximately 2,700 km in length

It is formed of volcanoes and the active ones are at the south-east tip of the archipelago, where Hawaii itself is located

It is believed that the chain began to form nearly 80 million years ago Each island started to evolve after an eruption on the sea floor First, a `hot spot' existed on the ocean bed, which let out a plume

of material called magma This magma may originate as deep as 2,883km below the ocean bed Next, further eruptions took place, which built up the volcano Eventually, it emerged above the surface of the ocean

Since that time, the spume of magma has remained static as the Pacific tectonic plate moves in a north-west direction across it at a speed of 7-9cm per year As it moves, a volcano forms as it passes over the hotspot and then become inactive when it has passed it (164 words)
