create a stimulating math environment in your home:

Patterns

Getting Started

Begin patterning by doing a simple clap, snap, clap, snap pattern with your hands, Have your child join in Say the words “clap” and

“snap” as you do It, Repeat this 8 or 10 times until your child is

confidently saying it with you Then, switch to saying “A” instead of

“clap” and “B” instead of “snap.”

Cracker Patterns

Give your child an assortment of small crackers (cheese, graham,

animal, etc.) Give him/her a small plate with several of each type

of cracker Place a long strip of aluminum foil on the table and

begin a pattern with the crackers Then, ask your child to continue the pattern, Let your child begin the next pattern, Continue in this

way to see how many different patterns your child can create!

Sponge Painting Patterns

Make a pattern on a strip of drawing

in tempera paint Repeat the pattern

twice, Then, have your child copy

the pattern on another strio of paper OU aX 7 @@

the activity using patterns in color, number, shape and position

Painting patterns with sponges on colored tissue paper makes

great wrapping paper for special occasions

Making Colored Pasta:

Put cup of vinegar and 10 to 20 drops of food

coloring in a gallon-size resealable plastic bag

Add a variety of pasta shapes and shake the

contents, Remove the pasta and let it dry on

paper towels, Repeat the process with three different colors, Then, place a small amount of each color of pasta and a variety of shapes in

individual resealable plastic bags

Make several copies of the Unifix Cube Pattern Cards on

page 7 or the Pattern Block Pattern Cards on page 9 Color

each curd in a different pattern Then, cut out the cards, glue

them onto colored poster board and laminate them Give the

cards to your child with Unifix cubes, pattern blocks or another

manipulative, Have him/her copy and continue the pattern

Buy a few sets of stickers that have

several different shapes and colors e@eeeee!l'eliell@

Make a pattern by placing some

stickers on a 3" x 9" tagboard strip HOHOHO

Place the stickers needed to repeat

the pattern on 3" tagboard squares

(one sticker per square), Have your

child repeat the pattern by placing

the correct squares at the end of the

Collect wrapping paper pieces

that have easy patterns to repeat

Cut drawing paper and tagboard into 6" squares, Glue the wrapping paper squares onto tagboard to add stiffness Have your child

choose a wrapping paper square

and use colored markers to copy

Draw three lines across the length of

several 3" x 9" strips of tagboard Use a

hole punch to punch a hole on any line,

beginning at the left of the card, to start

a position pattern of three elements

Have your child think of an object

while you ask questions about it

Your questions should narrow down each category of attribute, such

Use Your Noodle!

Give your child a bag of colored pasta

(See the directions for making colored

pasta on page 5.) Ask him/her to sort the Ê

pasta according to color Then, ask

him/her to tell you what he/she did, Wa.,

Example: “| put red pasta in this group,

This group has purple pasta and this group

has yellow.” Next, have your child sort

the pasta according to shape Have LF

pasta shapes, such as curly, round, etc

Finally, have your child sort the pasta

according to size He/she may make only

two sets at first—large and small—but
