Following are five responses for an Integrated Writing Task, each illustrating one of the five scores They are based on the passage and lecture given on pages 568-569

Response 1

The reading stated that there are two main types of tests used in secondary education One type is objective tests Objective test often consist of multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank and etc The other is subjective test, namely

The author of the reading emphasisized subjective tests The reading said objective tests mostly test memory, where as essays test problem solving skills This was the first reason the author favors objective test In the future, students will need the skills for subjective tests, not objective test A second reason in favor of objective reasons is that they train students to write well This skill, writ- ing, is necessary, everyone agrees And a third reason: it is easier for teachers to construct these tests

The professor said that the author of textbook takes too stong position for subjective test Objective tests test memorization, but this is not a problem Sometimes you need good memorization He also said that good writers can get good grades even though they don’t know the information Furthermore, he told that essay tests take less time to contruct, yet they take alot more time to grade, and its bettter for the teacher to grade all tests at the same time to be fair It takes much less time to grade objective tests You can even have them graded using technology such as a computer scanner

He concluded that both types of test have their places in testing at schools The best way depends on the purpose of the test Sometimes, he said, use

objective test, sometimes use subjective, sometimes blend the two

in the reading There are occasional grammatical or usage mistakes, but they

do not make it difficult to understand the writer's ideas The response is well organized, and signal words (the first reason a second reason and a third reason furthermore) make it easy to follow the author's logic

In the speaker’s opinion about the subjective test, he differs on the fact that

those are not always the best option in secondary schools He thinks that some-

times students need to memorize important information like dates in history or

important facts given by the professor In addition, the objective tests take less

time to correct

On the other hand, as the writing part says, subjective tests can be good to

help students to solve problems, learn multiple idioms, and give them a higher

level of understanding Although the speaker says that if the students are good

writers this can be easy for them eventhough they don’t know enough about

the subject Also if the class is small the correction can be easy, but if not, it can

be very hard for the professor It actually should take one day to correct them

In conclusion the speaker thinks that depending on the situation and times,

they should use one of the other or the combination of both

Comments: This response integrates most of the important ideas from the

reading and the lecture However, a lack of organization makes it somewhat

difficult to follow the writer’s reasoning This response also lacks the

sophistication of vocabulary and grammar required for a score of 5

Response 3

According the article, there is two principle type of test in secondery school

What they are? One type is objective test This type have the multiple choice

and true-false question In objective test, there can only be one answer They

test your memorization and bassic facts

Other type is subjective test (essey test) The lecture say that these are the

most important type test Essey test good for testing writing skills Good writers

can get good grades on essey test Also essey test help you to think clear But

for teachers it take more time to grade them On essey test there not just one

good answer

In my opinion, the best of these two types of test the essey test When | was

student in the secondery school my favorite type test taking is the essey | think

the article is right this type test help thinking skill and writing skill However,

also true as the presentre say that take a lot of time to grade the esseys for the

teacher

Comments: The response contains quite a few grammatical mistakes, especially

involving singular/plural noun use and subject/verb agreement There are

some spelling mistakes (bassic and essey, for example, should be basic and

essay) and the range of vocabulary use is quite limited There is some repetition

of ideas and the writer offers an opinion about testing even though an opinion

is not asked for in an Integrated Writing response However, the errors do not

generally obscure the writer’s meaning, and the writer accurately reports some

of the important ideas from both the article and the lecture

teaches the student valuble skills in writing The essay tests also easier to write

and grade

The presenter says that a good essay does not imply that the student knows

the events that she is writing about The same person can write different essays

at different times The objective test shows the persons’ ability for memorization

of facts, etc It is especially suitable for a large class, and computers can be used

to grade them

Maybe the best way to verify the student's ability is to combine the two

forms, testing both ther ability to express themselves in logical way and their

ideas clearly and effectively However, he is against the reading about objective

Getting facts and information is also an important base for education

Further, he mentioned that if student is good at writing essays but not

memorization, teachers cannot check his/her knowledge Because such a stu-

dent can write well witout enough information Moreover, that may lead poor

basics of education in his/her future

This Writing Section tests your ability to write academic English It consists of two

writing tasks

The first writing task is an “integrated” task It involves reading a short passage

and listening to a short lecture on the same topic You will then have twenty min-

utes in which to write a response based on the information in the passage and the

lecture

Now read the directions for the first writing task

DirEcTIONs: Take three minutes to read the short passage on the following page You

may take notes as you read

After three minutes, start the Audio Program You will hear a lecture on the

same topic as the reading Again, you may take notes as you listen

You will have twenty minutes to write your response Your response should

include information from both the reading and the lecture

Your essay will be rated on the completeness and accuracy of your response as

well as on the correctness and quality of your writing A typical response should be

150 to 225 words

You may use your notes and look at the reading passage as you write (During

the actual exam, you can view the reading passage on the computer screen after

the lecture is over.)

You will have twenty minutes in which to finish the Integrated Writing Task If

possible, you should write your response on a computer

Recently, there have been protests and demonstrations here on our campus, as well as at many other places, about medical research performed on animals— what is sometimes called vivisection It is natural that people are concerned about the ethical treatment of animals However, most of us agree that our top priority must be the reduction of human suffering

Of course, it is possible, and absolutely necessary, to keep animal suffering

to a minimum Animal researchers use anesthesia whenever possible to reduce pain and keep their animals clean, comfortable, and healthy It is possible to conduct experiments using animals without inflicting cruelty on animals

The problem is, there simply is no good substitute for animal experimenta- tion Other techniques can be used to test drugs, but none is as effective as testing them on animals Humans and chimpanzees share about 99% of their

genes Other animals also share the same basic life functions as humans, and

the reactions of these animals to drugs are a good guide to the reactions of human patients The usefulness of animal testing has been shown over and over For example, the very basis of modern medicine, the germ theory—the idea that diseases are caused by micro-organisms—was proven by the great French scientist Louis Pasteur by experimenting on chickens and pigs and other farm animals The effectiveness of penicillin was tested on rabbits and mice, and

insulin, which is used to treat diabetes, was tested on dogs Animal testing

remains a crucial tool today It is simply immoral to risk the lives of humans

when a drug or procedure can be tested on non-humans

TAKING NOTES AND PLANNING THE INTEGRATED RESPONSE

To get a good score on the TOEFL iBT, you will need to take accurate notes on the lecture for the Integrated Writing Task It’s also a good idea to take notes on the reading passage even though you will be permitted to look at the passage as you are writing your response

To write your response, you will need to take notes on the following information:

The main idea of both the lecture and the passage Key supporting points from the lecture

Corresponding key points from the passage Important examples or supporting ideas for these key points

The principles for taking notes for the lecture in this section are the same as those for the Listening Section and the Speaking Section You need to write down only important points, and you need to use abbreviations and symbols For more information on note taking, review the Listening Tutorial on Note Taking at the end

of the Listening Section (pp 381-393)
