Reason for the study 1

Teaching and learning English vocabulary poses significant challenges for non-native speakers Many students invest considerable time in vocabulary acquisition; however, relying on rote memorization often leads to frustration and dissatisfaction This monotonous approach can diminish students' enthusiasm for learning the language.

Despite significant efforts to implement various techniques for teaching English as a second language, numerous challenges persist for both teachers and students in the classroom To avoid future obstacles, it is essential to reform the educational process There is a growing need for innovative, flexible, and effective teaching methods to enhance language learning experiences.

Mind mapping is an effective tool for addressing challenges in teaching and learning English, benefiting both teachers and students amid the overwhelming influx of information Our brains do not process information linearly, making mind maps a valuable resource for better comprehension Despite numerous efforts to enhance English language instruction, many obstacles remain in the classroom To improve the educational experience, it is essential to adopt innovative and adaptable teaching techniques that can help overcome future barriers faced by students and educators.

Mind mapping is an effective tool for addressing the challenges in teaching and learning English It benefits both teachers and students by organizing and simplifying complex information, enhancing comprehension and retention.

Recent reforms in high school English teaching have led to significant changes in both content and methods to meet new objectives Despite efforts to implement various techniques for teaching English as a second language, challenges persist for both teachers and students in the classroom To enhance the educational process, it is crucial to adopt innovative, flexible, and effective teaching strategies; otherwise, barriers may continue to hinder progress in language learning.

The new teaching method emphasizes fostering positivity and creativity in students, enabling them to use language for communication rather than merely acquiring knowledge Teachers must understand the core principles of this approach and implement flexible, effective communication-focused activities in the classroom To enhance students' English proficiency, it is essential to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while also emphasizing vocabulary and linguistic knowledge Despite the shift towards innovative vocabulary teaching methods, challenges remain in their effective implementation Many educators recognize the critical role of vocabulary in enhancing students' linguistic abilities, yet learners often struggle to retain new words Mastery of vocabulary is crucial for improving English learning outcomes and overall exam performance While various effective teaching methods, such as using photos and scenarios, exist, they can be time-consuming and may lead to mechanical memorization Thus, finding an efficient tool for vocabulary acquisition is essential for students' success in learning English.

To accomplish that goal , I would like to introduce the theme:

" USING MIND MAP AND BRAINSTORM TECHNIQUES IN TEACHING

ENGLISH VOCABULARY FOR STUDENTS GRADE 11 TH ”

A Mind Map is an effective thinking tool that enhances knowledge organization through divergent thinking by linking a target word with related concepts This technique facilitates the recall of vocabulary by triggering associations with connected items By incorporating visuals such as words, pictures, colors, and graphics, Mind Maps present information in a dynamic and engaging format Utilizing Mind Maps aligns with visualization theory, information processing theory, and brain science, making them a powerful resource for effective learning.

Mind mapping is an effective tool for addressing challenges in English teaching and learning, as it helps both teachers and students manage the overwhelming amount of information available Given that our brains do not process information linearly, mind maps can assist students in gradually overcoming difficulties with English grammar and vocabulary By incorporating mind mapping and brainstorming techniques into lessons, teachers can create more engaging and effective learning experiences, fostering greater student activity and creativity in mastering the English language.

Aims of the study 3

This study explores the use of mind mapping techniques as a powerful tool to motivate technical students in language learning By reviewing past and current research, we detail the implementation of mind mapping in education The findings indicate that mind maps facilitate problem-solving, foster creativity, aid in vocabulary retention, improve note-taking, enhance reading skills, organize tasks, and assist in presentation preparation Ultimately, the study concludes that mind mapping is an effective strategy for enhancing learning outcomes in the classroom.

In order to address the aim of the study, the following research questions are raised for exploration:

The theme revolves around research problems using mind maps in teaching English vocabulary at Quang Xuong 1 high school

Subjects of case studies that I have bravely applied this theme for graders of 11T4 and 11T5

This study aims to explore the application of mind maps in vocabulary teaching for high school students, acknowledging that it cannot address all facets of vocabulary learning and instruction.

This study serves as a valuable resource for students, teachers, and researchers in English language education Students can leverage the mind map model to enhance their vocabulary acquisition efficiently, while teachers can gain insights into utilizing this model for more effective vocabulary instruction Additionally, researchers will find this study to be a credible reference for their academic inquiries.

To effectively learn English, students must develop strong skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also mastering grammar However, many students face challenges in grammar school, such as difficulty remembering proper usage and common mistakes due to a lack of understanding of the material Utilizing a grammar school mind map can aid learners in grasping the fundamentals more effectively But what exactly are mind maps?

Students at Quang Xuong 1 High School, like their peers in Vietnam, come from various parts of the district, with many hailing from village schools Despite four years of English instruction in secondary school, their proficiency levels vary significantly; most excel in grammar but struggle with speaking, writing, and listening This lack of vocabulary hampers their ability to articulate ideas and comprehend spoken English Therefore, effective vocabulary presentation is crucial for enhancing their understanding and retention of word meanings.

Mind Mapping is a brainstorming technique for quickly charting your group’s ideas in logical groupings, even when members give ideas in a non-sequential manner.

The Mind Mapping technique enhances brainstorming by enabling you to generate ideas and simultaneously establish a foundational structure for organizing the information collected This approach overcomes the limitations of traditional linear formats, allowing for a more dynamic and effective outlining of concepts.

Mind mapping is an effective technique for visualizing thoughts, enhancing creativity, improving memory retention, and facilitating problem-solving.

Tony and Barry Buzan were the pioneering researchers who developed and articulated the mind mapping technique, which serves as an effective visualization tool that mirrors the brain's structure According to Tony Buzan, this technique aligns seamlessly with the way the human brain processes information.

A mind map is a visual diagram that organizes information around a central concept, resembling a tree with a radial structure At its core lies the main idea, such as poetry, while the branches represent subtopics like types of poetry, notable poets, and poetry publications This structure allows for greater detail to emerge from the branches, which can also be interconnected, enhancing the understanding of the subject.

2.1.2 WHY MIND MAPS AND BRAINSTORM ARE BETTER THAN TEXT NOTES?

Mind maps and brainstorm can be more effective than other brainstorming and linear note-taking methods for a number of reasons:

• It's also a very intuitive way to organize your thoughts, since mind maps mimic the way our brains think—bouncing ideas off of each other, rather than thinking linearly

Focusing on key subtopics allows us to convey main ideas effectively and efficiently By concentrating on relevant keywords, we simplify our content, saving time and enhancing clarity.

Mind mapping simplifies the process of understanding and retaining information This effective thinking technique helps clarify learned material, making it easier to remember and reducing confusion.

Mind mapping unleashes limitless imagination and creativity, making learning enjoyable By incorporating images and colors, it stimulates the brain, fostering excitement and engagement with the material.

The advancement of information technology has led to the emergence of numerous Mind Map software options online, including free tools like FreeMind, MindManager, XMind, and MindMaple Many of these programs offer user-friendly features that enable teachers to effortlessly download and create Mind Maps in various formats.

Here are some types of mind map techniques:

2.2 STEPS USING MIND MAPS IN TEACHING ENGLISH:

A Mind Map is a visual representation that features a central word at its core, representing the main topic being explored Surrounding this central word are first-level subordinate words, which are related topics that form branches These branches can further expand into additional levels of subordinate topics, creating a structure that can accommodate an infinite number of sub-centered words, known as nodes This organization mirrors the way our brain processes information, making a Mind Map an effective tool for capturing and recording thoughts.

A Mind Map is a powerful visual tool that combines words, colors, images, and graphs to enhance memory retention By engaging the right hemisphere of the brain, these elements not only improve recall but also vividly illustrate the meanings of words Additionally, they effectively highlight subtle distinctions between similar terms, making learning more efficient and engaging.

Mind Maps are structured hierarchically, aligning with logical thinking processes By employing divergent thinking to develop subtopics, Mind Maps present information in a coherent and organized manner that mirrors how our brains naturally process information In contrast, linear notes disrupt this flow by isolating ideas from their context, which impairs creativity and recall This disconnection hinders the natural thought process and diminishes the potential for generating innovative ideas.

In particular, using mind map and brainstorming can follow the procedure:

1 Start in the CENTRE of a blank page turned sideways Why?

Because starting in the centre gives your Brain freedom to spread out in all directions and to express itself more freely and naturally

2 Use an IMAGE or PICTURE for your central idea Why?

An image can convey complex ideas and stimulate your imagination, making it a powerful tool for engagement A central image captures attention, enhances focus, and boosts concentration, providing an invigorating experience for the brain.

3 Use COLOURS throughout Why? Because colours are as exciting to your Brain as are images Colour adds extra vibrancy and life to your Mind Map,adds tremendous energy to your Creative Thinking, and is fun!

4 CONNECT your MAIN BRANCHES to the central image and connect your second- and third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc Why? Because your Brain works by association It likes to link two (or three, or four) things together If you connect the branches, you will understand and remember a lot more easily

5 Make your branches CURVED rather than straight-lined Why? Because having nothing but straight lines is boring to your Brain

6 Use ONE KEY WORD PER LINE Why? Because single key words give your Mind Map more power and flexibility

7 Use IMAGES throughout Why? Because each image, like the central image, is also worth a thousand words So if you have only 10 images in your Mind Map, it’s already the equal of 10,000 words of notes

After students finish making the mind maps , teachers can ask students to do some following activities:

In this activity, each group will present and explain their mind maps, fostering a deeper understanding of their knowledge This exercise not only enhances their comprehension but also builds their confidence in public speaking as they share their insights with others.

Teachers guide students in discussing, modifying, and refining their mind maps to enhance understanding and collaboration By facilitating this process, educators act as organizers, helping students to effectively develop a comprehensive mind map that addresses the problem at hand.

Utilizing a mind map is an effective way to consolidate knowledge, as it allows teachers to present grammatical concepts clearly Educators can either use a pre-prepared mind map displayed on a side panel or cover, or encourage students to create their own mind maps to illustrate their understanding of the lesson This visual approach enhances comprehension and retention of grammatical knowledge.

In conclusion, no single technique for presenting target vocabulary has achieved universal acceptance among language teachers and learners It is not feasible to declare one method as entirely sufficient or insufficient for teaching vocabulary in foreign languages Relying solely on one technique throughout all learning stages may be ineffective While mind mapping has proven to be an effective strategy for vocabulary acquisition, it is beneficial for educators and students to incorporate a variety of supplementary techniques to enhance vocabulary teaching.

One of the key challenges foreign language teachers face is enabling learners to understand and communicate effectively in the target language To address this, educators often incorporate strategies from psychology, such as using "Mind Maps." These visual tools help learners brainstorm and expand their vocabulary while enhancing listening and reading comprehension By integrating "Mind Maps" into their lessons, teachers can support oral fluency, empower students, build self-efficacy, and ultimately promote greater learner autonomy.

Mind Maps are essential tools in teaching, as they foster interconnectedness among isolated concepts, enabling learners to effectively organize and manage their acquired knowledge By linking existing knowledge with new information, Mind Maps facilitate a deeper understanding for students, ultimately leading to the development of a comprehensive knowledge system.
