METHODOLOGY

Procedures of Application of Quizlet in teaching and learning English 11 vocabulary

The methodology in collecting data for students consists of a questionnaire and a set of pre-test and post-test to observe the effectiveness of the use of Quizlet

To effectively utilize the App, teachers should follow the recommended steps to create their own classes This involves adhering to the outlined procedure for optimal results.

- Buy a fee-paying account from the web quizlet.com

- Create and log in their own account

- Set up and name their classes

- Provide students with the link or class’ name

- Instruct students how to create account to join the class

- Ask students to use their real name and identification to log in the class

- Create new lessons before or after each unit in Textbook

- Supplement the words day by day after each section

- Ask students to access the App and study the words as frequently as possible

The Quizlet App is utilized effectively across four units of the English Textbook 11, specifically in Unit 10: Nature in Danger, Unit 11: Sources of Energy, Unit 12: The Asian Games, and Unit 13: Hobbies, as illustrated in the accompanying images.

The pre-test and post-test will concentrate on vocabulary tasks from Units 10 to 13, covering topics such as Nature in Danger, Sources of Energy, The Asian Games, and Hobbies These tasks are included in the standard textbooks for 11th graders, in accordance with Vietnamese regulations.

The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Quizlet in enhancing vocabulary retention, utilizing pre-tests and post-tests to measure learners' progress after using the app Both tests focus on the topic of energy and cover a specific range of vocabulary, designed to assess students' ability to memorize words over a 10-week period A separate group of 45 students, not using Quizlet, completes the same tests to provide comparative data The tests, formatted similarly and based on textbook vocabulary, ensure objectivity with a single correct answer for each question, graded on a scale of 0 to 10 While the tests primarily assess vocabulary retention rather than active usage, they fulfill curricular requirements, making them suitable tools for this research.

To assess student opinions on the Quizlet App for vocabulary study, a meticulously crafted questionnaire was developed, focusing on student attitudes and teacher perspectives regarding its effectiveness and challenges This survey aims to highlight psychological changes before and after using Quizlet, revealing discrepancies between expectations and reality, which may influence its adoption in educational settings Despite the potential benefits, some parents remain skeptical about Quizlet's positive effects The questionnaire, taking approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete, consists of multiple-choice questions divided into four parts: Part 1 evaluates students' attitudes towards English vocabulary learning and teaching prior to using Quizlet, while Part 2 examines their willingness to learn vocabulary through the app, reflecting their overall impression and attitude towards its use.

The author conducted a survey to gather teachers' opinions on the effectiveness of Quizlet in long-term vocabulary teaching for 11th-grade EFL students The questionnaire, detailed in Appendix D, consists of four questions divided into two categories: the role of vocabulary teaching and the effectiveness of the Quizlet app The results reveal positive attitudes among educators towards utilizing Quizlet as a valuable tool in enhancing vocabulary instruction.

Participant instructions

Before implementing the Quizlet App for teaching vocabulary to 11th graders, the author purchased an annual teacher account and created classes, sharing links for students to join under their real names Once enrolled, participants engaged with lessons aligned to the topics provided by the teacher, with daily updates following each completed lesson After each unit, students were required to capture and submit screenshots of their test results from the Quizlet App, allowing the author to verify their active participation in vocabulary learning.

Here is 2 pictures showing the list of students who were supposed to log in assigned class:

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Findings

To assess vocabulary retention across various topics in a textbook, a pre-test was administered to 127 students at the project's outset The results indicated a significant variance in student performance, with only 22.9% scoring above 8, including just one student achieving the highest score Conversely, 14.1% scored below average, 15.7% reached an average score, and 33% successfully completed three-quarters of the test This outcome suggests that, despite large classroom sizes, English vocabulary teaching in Vietnam is effective in the short term, primarily focusing on grammar and vocabulary memorization However, most students retained scores clustered around the average range of 5 to 6 points.

20 and 31 students had such scores Whereas the average score of uncontrolled group is 6.24 (Table 4.2), which means that the selected students in both groups have the same knowledge background

Table 4.1: Statistics of the pre-test for the controlled data sample

Table 4.2: Statistics of the pre-test for the uncontrolled data sample

Figure 4.1: Pre-test’s average score of 2 groups

Despite extensive English education, students struggle with vocabulary retention, highlighting the need for effective learning strategies Research indicates that Vietnamese students often fail to apply learned vocabulary in various contexts Relying solely on memorization without visualization is ineffective Incorporating the Quizlet app into teaching can enhance vocabulary retention, as evidenced by improved post-test results compared to pre-tests By integrating visualization techniques, this teaching approach can significantly impact students' ability to retain and utilize vocabulary in real-life situations.

The questionnaire presented in Appendix C consists of various questions aimed at students who have utilized Quizlet for vocabulary learning Developed based on the theories of Cowan (1974) and Wood (2001) regarding educational evaluation, it seeks to gather insights into students' attitudes towards vocabulary acquisition through the app The results of the questionnaire responses from students are summarized in Table 4.3.

A survey of students aged 5 to 17 reveals that only 17.3 percent find vocabulary learning engaging, with most describing their interest as 'somewhat interesting' or 'not interesting at all.' This indicates a need for teachers to reassess their current approaches to make vocabulary instruction more stimulating and appealing to students.

‘Tedious’ In fact, nearly a half of students find vocabulary learning ‘Tedious’ and

‘No-interesting’ In other words, more students find learning English vocabulary more tedious than teachers’ teaching

Figure 4.3: Students’ attitude towards using Quizlet App

After utilizing the Quizlet App for ten weeks, students demonstrated significant improvement in their vocabulary post-test scores compared to their pre-test results The testing conditions remained consistent, and the outcomes indicated that Quizlet effectively enhanced learning, as evidenced by a reduction in score variation and a notable increase in higher scores Specifically, the number of students scoring above 7 rose from 29 to 44, reflecting an increase of 15 students achieving above-average scores Additionally, there was a slight increase in the number of students scoring between 5 and 7, while a decline was observed in lower scores.

The analysis indicates that 11 students achieving average scores may imply a smaller number transitioning from below average to average compared to those advancing from average to above average Notably, only 11 students scored at 4 or below, highlighting the effectiveness of the Quizlet App in enhancing student outcomes, as suggested by both the literature review and pre-test results In contrast, the uncontrolled group, which took the same test concurrently, experienced a significant decline in their average score to 5.85, a decrease of 0.39 from the pre-test, and notably lower than the controlled group’s post-test score of 6.91 This comparison suggests that students utilizing the Quizlet App not only retained vocabulary more effectively but also achieved greater learning improvements than anticipated.

The controlled group's post-test results reveal a significant improvement in test scores, with the mode increasing from 6 in the pre-test (31 students or 24.4%) to 7 in the post-test (40 students or 31.5%) Additionally, the second most common score shifted from 5 in the pre-test (20 students or 15.7%) to 6 in the post-test (23 students or 18.1%), indicating a similar trend While most students achieved scores of 5 and above, the overall distribution suggests a positive upward movement in test scores However, a small number of students still faced challenges in improving their marks Overall, the post-test results highlight the significant impact of using the Quizlet App on students' vocabulary retention.

Figure 4.5: Result comparison between Pre-test and Post-test of controlled group 4.1.4 Pre-test and Post-test data comparison

The controlled group's average test score increased from 6.22 to 6.91, indicating a gain of 0.62 points per student, with many improving their vocabulary test scores by about one point This suggests that the Quizlet teaching approach, which emphasizes topic review before the test, effectively enhances student performance Notably, the results showed improvements across all score ranges, highlighting the method's superiority over traditional teaching approaches.

Table 4.7: Statistics of the pre-test and the post-test of controlled group

Pre-test Post-test Change

Figure 4.6: Change of test score range of controlled group

Many students face challenges in improving their marks, particularly those in the lower score range, indicating that factors such as study habits, attitudes, and motivation significantly influence their learning outcomes A survey highlights notable differences in students’ attitudes and classroom behavior Additionally, the post-test scores exhibit less variation compared to pre-test scores, suggesting that the introduction of Quizlet has slightly reduced the disparities in students' abilities Although the observed differences are minimal, the t-test results, showing values below 1 percent, indicate that the null hypothesis regarding significant changes in the data cannot be rejected even at a 99 percent confidence level.

More importantly, the average test score of the uncontrolled group of 45 students who did not use Quizlet App in learning vocabulary is lower (5.85) than that (6.91) of

A study involving 127 students demonstrated that using the Quizlet App significantly enhances vocabulary retention, showcasing its effectiveness in helping learners memorize words more effectively over time.

Current evidence indicates that Quizlet has a significant positive impact on vocabulary teaching; however, further research should explore other influencing factors, such as student attitude and motivation It's essential to consider whether the observed improvements in average marks are primarily due to the students' positive attitudes towards studying, rather than the teaching method itself The survey results reveal that many students are highly motivated to study vocabulary to achieve better grades, which could explain both the increase in average scores and the decrease in standard deviation.

A study conducted with 10 teachers at Thanh Chuong 1 High School aimed to gather insights on their perspectives regarding the use of Quizlet for teaching vocabulary The findings revealed that the majority of participants were young female teachers with over 10 years of experience, suggesting a gender imbalance in the English teaching staff and highlighting the willingness of newer educators to explore innovative teaching methods The questionnaire results indicated a unanimous recognition among teachers of the crucial role that English vocabulary plays in language acquisition However, despite this understanding, less than 10% of students in Vietnam show interest in learning vocabulary, although it is noteworthy that more students find the subject engaging compared to the teaching methods employed by their educators.

Teachers unanimously agree that understanding vocabulary is essential for language comprehension, as it enables learners to express their ideas effectively Without a solid grasp of vocabulary, students struggle to communicate and build relationships Many educators view vocabulary as a crucial tool for successful communication, which aligns with the primary objective of learning foreign languages Interestingly, student feedback indicates that, despite a lack of interest in the subject, there is a strong desire to achieve high marks in English, prompting them to engage with vocabulary learning This motivation likely stems from their recognition of vocabulary's importance in mastering the English language.

Most teachers in this study believe that the vocabulary tests are not particularly challenging, with 70% rating them as 'Normal' while others find them 'Difficult.' Despite this, many students struggle to achieve average scores, with some scoring below 5, indicating difficulties with basic English vocabulary as per the Vietnamese high school curriculum This suggests that tools like Quizlet could be beneficial for average students in other schools Additionally, all participating teachers agree that using Quizlet for vocabulary instruction is effective, with 60% rating it as 'Effective' and 40% as 'Very effective.'

CONCLUSION

Recapitulation

This concluding chapter summarizes the key findings in relation to the research questions, highlights the pedagogical implications of the study, addresses its limitations, and offers recommendations for future research to expand upon these findings.

This study, conducted over 10 weeks with 127 11th-grade students at Thanh Chuong 1 High School during the 2019-2020 academic year, investigates the impact of different teaching methods on vocabulary acquisition Utilizing a pre-test and post-test alongside a questionnaire, the findings reveal a significant improvement in test scores, rising from an average of 6.29 to 6.91 The results suggest that while traditional teaching methods focusing on vocabulary and grammar yield positive outcomes, the use of the Quizlet app may enhance vocabulary knowledge even further Overall, the study underscores the value of effective teaching strategies in motivating students and improving their language skills.

Questionnaires assessing students' opinions and teachers' perspectives reveal key factors influencing test outcomes, such as student attitudes and test difficulties The findings indicate that participants are motivated to learn English vocabulary through Quizlet, recognizing its importance and benefits However, they tend to rely on traditional teaching methods, which can be perceived as monotonous, and lack adequate practice materials Therefore, it is essential for teachers to adopt more effective vocabulary teaching strategies and consider incorporating Quizlet as a supplementary tool in their classrooms.

Online activities like Cards, Learn, Speller, Test, Scatter, and Race on Quizlet enhance students' pronunciation and facilitate enjoyable learning, allowing them to engage with material in a fun way rather than just memorizing vocabulary lists These interactive tools can also serve as homework, contributing to midterm scores and fostering student autonomy and self-study skills While Quizlet is effective, it’s important for educators to be aware that repetitive activities may lead to student boredom over time, and since participation is currently recommended rather than mandatory, motivation may wane Therefore, teachers should integrate diverse teaching methods to maintain engagement and make lessons more dynamic.

Research indicates that students' outcomes are primarily influenced by their attitudes, including motivation, homework consistency, class participation, and understanding the subject's significance While teaching content and teachers' attitudes have minimal impact, adopting effective teaching approaches can significantly enhance students' motivation and willingness to learn.

In conclusion, the Quizlet application has significantly motivated students in vocabulary learning However, educators should recognize that this tool may be more suitable for certain learners than others Therefore, it is essential for teachers to adapt and incorporate a variety of tools and methods to enhance teaching and learning effectiveness.

Limitations

To fully leverage the Quizlet App, both educators and students must maintain a monthly paid subscription, which can be costly and unaffordable for some Additionally, varying levels of technological proficiency among users may hinder the achievement of desired outcomes.

This exploratory study provides an initial insight into the current state of vocabulary learning among students at Thanh Chuong 1 High School To achieve more generalizable findings, a larger and more diverse sample is recommended It is important to note that this research is limited to data from three specific classes, and the results should not be considered definitive or applicable to all student groups with varying backgrounds and abilities This study aims to encourage further investigation in the field of vocabulary learning.

The analysis approach primarily relied on data discussion, with the survey limited to closed-ended questions allowing only single responses To enhance the study, incorporating multiple-choice and open-ended questions would be beneficial, though this would necessitate additional time and budget Furthermore, the research overlooks various factors influencing students, such as their attitudes and motivation.

Students' study progress is influenced by various factors, with English vocabulary development being crucial In addition to students' attitudes, the availability of facilities and learning materials plays a significant role In today's internet-driven and globalized world, inadequate resources like air conditioning, computers, and sports facilities can hinder students' growth Furthermore, a lack of such facilities restricts schools' ability to compete in the contemporary free economy.

Suggestions for further studies

Further research is needed to explore additional factors influencing student outcomes, such as attitude and motivation, to fully understand the effectiveness of Quizlet in education Future studies should incorporate a broader range of determinants beyond just gender Additionally, educational authorities and schools should support and equip both teachers and students to maximize the benefits of using Quizlet for learning English vocabulary.

It is advisable to conduct further research with a larger sample size, incorporating a diverse range of participants from various schools and utilizing a broader array of questions in the questionnaire.

Additionally, it is suggested that other factors affecting students like attitude, motivation, learning styles, etc be taken into consideration in further studies to make the declaration more convincing

In conclusion, the researcher asserts that, despite certain limitations, this study serves as a valuable resource for English teachers and language educators aiming to enhance their students' vocabulary learning The research aims to provide effective strategies that facilitate regular vocabulary acquisition for both teachers and learners.

Teaching implications

The adoption of Quizlet can benefit both teachers and students, as indicated by the study's findings However, it is important to recognize that the teaching approach may not be suitable for every student, suggesting that its implementation should be selective and tailored to specific student types Further research is needed to explore additional factors influencing these outcomes.

Furthermore, from literature review, here are some suggestions for teaching and learning vocabulary First, for teachers:

An effective teaching approach fosters a collaborative learning environment where students engage in sharing knowledge and resources with one another in pairs or groups This interaction not only enhances their understanding of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and sentence expressions but also encourages self-correction Moreover, working collaboratively boosts students' confidence, reduces their fear of making mistakes, and allows them to receive constructive feedback without the anxiety of being judged.

Teachers play a crucial role in equipping students with essential vocabulary and anticipating potential challenges they may face This proactive approach is important, as research suggests that prior preparation on a topic can significantly enhance students' performance in post-tests.

Meanwhile, as for students, since the teaching approach should be selective to individuals with certain characteristics Therefore, students should:

To foster effective learning strategies, it is essential to assess students' motivation and attitudes towards their studies Ideally, students should exhibit average test scores with minimal variation in their English proficiency, possess a strong desire to achieve high grades, maintain a reserved demeanor, and demonstrate a commitment to their academic pursuits.

● Actively participate in vocabulary activities in class, make the most of class time to memorise new words, and utilise Quizlet.

Learning implications

Students are encouraged to explore the educational benefits of gadgets integrated with Quizlet to enhance their vocabulary By effectively utilizing mobile devices and maximizing the potential of Quizlet, learners can significantly improve their language skills.

Students should identify their learning motivation to adopt effective strategies and a positive attitude toward using the Quizlet App for learning English vocabulary Active participation in vocabulary activities during class and the use of Quizlet for memorizing new words are essential for enhancing their language skills.

To enhance English learning, students should familiarize themselves with interactive online tools and new technologies Conducting research on the effectiveness of Quizlet can significantly improve vocabulary acquisition, ultimately leading to the development of the four essential language skills.

To effectively learn English vocabulary using gadgets and applications, learners must manage distractions effectively Additionally, enhancing learners' autonomy is crucial to fully leverage the benefits of tools like Quizlet.

Solar energy, air, and water are often referred to as renewable resources due to their unlimited availability However, this classification could change if humanity fails to manage these resources sustainably The quality and accessibility of solar energy, in particular, are crucial for maintaining its status as a renewable resource.

The health of the Earth is intricately tied to the quality of its atmosphere Pollution can hinder the solar energy that reaches our planet, jeopardizing the continuation of life It is essential for the air to maintain a balanced composition of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases If pollution persists, the air will lack the necessary elements for survival Additionally, the quality of our water is critical, as industrial activities are contaminating this vital resource Therefore, it is imperative to conserve resources and protect both air and water Sustainable practices must play a crucial role in ensuring a healthy environment for all living beings.

Read the following passage and choose the suitable words given to complete each blank abundant, ultimately, falling, environmental, limitless, renewable, replaced, non-renewable, costs, geothermal

Renewable energy resources encompass solar, water, wind, and biomass These resources are either virtually inexhaustible, such as solar energy, which will persist for billions of years, or can be replenished faster than they are consumed While the availability of water and wind may fluctuate over time, they remain relatively sustainable Biomass energy, derived from organic materials like wood, also contributes to the renewable energy landscape.

The use of renewable resources can present challenges, including high costs and competition with other uses, such as trees As technology advances and the adoption of renewable energy increases, prices may decrease Conversely, the depletion of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas will lead to rising costs for these non-renewable resources Ultimately, even if the initial costs of renewable energy remain high, non-renewable energy sources will become increasingly expensive, necessitating a shift towards renewable options.
