English Extracurricular session with the topic: “Raise students’ awareness in
protecting the environment through extra-curricular English session about the pollution in Vietnam”
PART A: INTRODUCTION
1 Rationales:
English has played a vital role in society and made considerable contribution to education, culture, science and technology The number of people learning English for various purposes such as job, business, travelling, …
is continually on the increase everyday
In our country, English has been regarded as the most important foreign language nowadays, especially since the Vietnamese government carried out the open door policy English has been taught for a long time in Vietnam and becomes a compulsory subject However, the emphasis on transmission of structural rules and forms often serve as the principal method of teaching English in Vietnamese schools Most of Vietnamese teachers tend to focus on teaching as much grammar and vocabulary as possible This cannot do much for students to assure a successful communication in daily life
Therefore, to help my students both practice speaking skill and raise the awareness of protecting the environment, I have decided to organize an
extra-curricular session of English and choose: “Raise students’ awareness in protecting the environment through extra-curricular English session about the pollution in Vietnam” as the theme for my study.
2 Aims of the study:
Each work has its own aims, so does this study The aims of my study are:
To help students master English more and develop skills of group-work
To help students raise students’ awareness of conserving the environment
To fulfill my career passion and improve my teaching skills
3 Limitation of the study.
In this study, I mostly concentrate on organizing students’ activities to study the pollution environment in Vietnam with four main events:
1 How has pollution environment affected Vietnam?
2 Some reasons cause the pollution environment
3 The consequences that might occur
4 Some possible solutions
4 The object of the study.

1 Warm- up:
Teacher introduces about the topic of extra-curricular session: The air and water pollution
- Teacher shows five questions that related to the environment and asks students
to prepare at home
- Teacher calls leader of each group to answer
- Teacher gives feedback and comment
- Teacher leads to topic and announces the extra- curricular session starts
2 Presentation.
The representative of each group will present what they have collected in front of the class and the rest listen to them carefully
2.1 Group 1 Presenter: LE THI LAN ANH
The content: The definition of the pollution environment
First, I present the definition of the natural environment The natural environment includes all living and non-living organisms that occur in nature, meaning that are not artificial This term is commonly applied to the Earth or to certain parts of the Earth
Second, I present the definition of the pollution environment: Human activities including industrialization and agricultural practices contributed immensely in no small measure to the degradation and pollution of the environment which adversely has an effect on the water bodies (rivers and ocean) and air that is a necessity for life The pollution environment consists of water pollution and air pollution
Water pollution is any chemical, biological, or physical change in water quantity that harmful influent in living organisms or that makes water unusable for desired uses There are several classes of water pollutants One is disease-causing agent, which include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasitic worms that enter water from domestic sewage and untreated human and animal waste
Air pollution is the presence of substances in the atmosphere that are harmful to the health of humans and other living beings, or cause damage to the climate or to materials There are different types of air pollutants, such as
Trang 8gases (such as ammonia, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane and chlorofluorocarbons), particulates (both organic and inorganic), and biological molecules
Picture 1:Types of the environment pollution
The pollution environment refers to the average long-term changes over the entire Earth These include the nature and humans such as:
Cause some serious diseases
Affect people's lives
Affect the whole ecosystem (disrupts the balance in our ecosystem)

2.2 Group 2 Presenter: LE THI DUNG
The content: Causes and effects of water pollution
2.2.1 Causes of water pollution
Nowadays, in Vietnam, although the government is trying to apply the policy about protect environment, water pollution is one of the biggest problem
of country There are many causes lead to water pollution Some of them play an essential part in making water being polluted are organic, inorganic, industrial and agriculture
One main cause of this issue is waste water come from many companies and then being pulled out water bodies, especially into rivers or seas, because this is the most convenient way of treating waste water Farmers who indiscriminately use fertilizers and pesticides in cultivation is also the cause of water pollution
Another major cause that making water pollution Every day people do everything that waste of water, for instance, wash hands, cars, dishes shower and
so on In some development countries, all waste water is treated before dumping
to the water bodies Yet in the others countries almost of water is not treated instead of flowing directly into the sea
Another cause is the awareness of citizens, people always use water for many purposes and then they dump waste water, garbage or people even throw dead animals into rivers, ponds, lakes also seriously pollute water sources
Trang 10Picture 3:
Pollutants (particles, chemicals or substances that make water contaminated) are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without enough treatment to get rid of harmful compounds.
2.2.2 Effects of water pollution
2.2 2.1 Effects on human Health:
We all drink water that comes from a source: this may be a lake or local river In countries that have poor screening and purification practices, people often get water-borne disease outbreaks such as cholera and tuberculosis In developed countries, even where there are better purification methods, people still suffer from the health effects of water pollution
2.2.2.2 Effects on ecosystems:
The effect is that it breeds algae growth and causes the growth of much more water organism This algae attack affects fish and other aquatic animals by absorbing and reducing their oxygen supply Algae growth also clogs fish gills Naturally, the order of ecosystems in that water is affected negatively, as the destruction or introduction of any foreign organism alters the entire food chain
in there
2.2.2.3 Effects on animals:
Animals, including water animals, die when water is poisoned for various reasons Other animals are stressed and their populations are endangered That water pollution caused a lot of damage and deaths of many animals.Animals are also affected by solid waste thrown into water bodies, as they harm them in many ways
2.2.2.4 Effects on economic cost:
It can cost a lot money to purify drinking water Fishing stock is affected negatively when there is a depletion of oxygen Consumers are also wary of fish from these sources and tend to stay away from them, costing fisheries to lose revenue In places where there are water activities or sports, lots of money is spent to clean up the water from algae blooms and the like

The content: Causes and effects of air pollution
2.3.1 Causes of air pollution:
Industry, transportation, coal power plants and household solid fuel usage are major contributors to air pollution
Burning fossil fuel will release a lot of harmful gases into the air and cause smog Smog refers to thick smoke hovering over a particular area and this affects people more easily Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution
Farmers use fertilizers and pesticides in cultivation is also the cause of air pollution
2.3.2 Effects of Air Pollution:
Air pollution may cause diseases, allergies and even death to humans; it may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the natural environment (for example, climate change, ozone change, ozone depletion or habitat degradation) or built environment (for example, acid rain) Some of the most devastating effects of air pollution can be viewed under the following points
2.3.2.1 Effects on humans
Air pollution is known to cause irritation in the eyes, lungs, nose, and throat cause diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections It creates respiratory problems and exacerbates existing conditions such as asthma and emphysema When continually exposed to air pollution, humans become at higher risk for cardiovascular disease
Picture 4: Infographic air pollution.
Effects of health A set of symptoms
Picture 5:Poor quality of the air
Trang 122.3.2.2 Effects on environment:
Air pollution can damage crops and trees in a variety of ways Ground-level ozone can lead to reductions in agricultural crop and commercial forest yields, reduced growth and survivability of tree seedlings, and increased plant susceptibility to disease, pests and other environmental stresses (such as harsh weather)

2.3.2.3: Effects on weather
The main impact of air pollution on the weather is an increase in natural disasters events such as heat waves, flood, droughts, cyclones, acidic rain and rainstorms Episodes of intense precipitation contribute to flooding, soil erosion, landslides, and damage to structures and crops

2.3.2.4: Effects on Economic impact
Air pollution impacts on labor productivity, health expenditures and agricultural crop yields, are projected to lead to global economic costs that gradually increase There's no one-size-fits-all recipe for reducing
the impacts of air pollution
Picture 10: Natural disasters and environmental pollution can reduce GDP by 0.6 per cent per year from 2016-20, according to the National Centre for Socio-economic Information and Forecast (NCIF) under the Ministry of Planning and
Investment.
