The game is contested by two teams consisting of 15 players each. These 15 players assume different positions on the pitch with 8 making up the forwards, also called the pack, and 7 making up the backs. The ball can be moved either by carrying it, kicking it or passing it. However, at no point can the ball be passed forward by hand, if a player wants to move the ball forward, he must carry or kick it. If the ball is passed forward, it is called a knock on which results in a scrum to the other team. A scrum is used many times during a rugby game and is usually the normal restart for a number of situations. If a team are awarded a penalty, they have three options on how they want to play it. They can kick the ball out of bounds and receive a lineout, take a free kick or take a penalty kick at goal. Whatever the team decides to do, the team that committed the offence have to retreat 10 metres from the site of the foul.As you might have guessed, the aim of the game is to score as many points as possible – whether by try, conversion, drop goal or penalty – and ultimately, finish with a higher score than the opposing team.(Adapted from http:howto.yellow.co.nz)Question 31: What is the main idea of the passage?A. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 35 to 42
Scientists have identified two ways in which species disappear The first is through ordinary or “background” extinctions, where species that fail to adapt are slowly replaced by more adaptable life forms The second is when large numbers of species go to the wall in relatively short periods of biological time There have been five such extinctions, each provoked by cataclysmic evolutionary events caused by some geological eruption, climate shift, or space junk slamming into the Earth Scientists now believe that another mass extinction of species is currently under way – and this time human fingerprints are on the trigger
How are we are doing it? Simply by demanding more and more space for ourselves In our assault on the
ecosystems around us we have used a number of tools, from spear and gun to bulldozer and chainsaw Certain
especially rich ecosystems have proved the most vulnerable In Hawaii more than half of the native birds are now gone – some 50 species Such carnage has taken place all across the island communities of the Pacific and Indian oceans While many species were hunted to extinction, others simply succumbed to the “ introduced predators’ that humans
brought with them: the cat, the dog, the pig, and the rat
Today the tempo of extinction is picking up speed Hunting is no longer the major culprit, although rare birds
and animals continue to be butchered for their skin, feathers, tusks, and internal organs, or taken as savage pets Today
the main threat comes from the destruction of the habitat of wild plants, animals, and insects need to survive The draining and damming of wetland and river courses threatens the aquatic food chain and our own seafood industry Overfishing and the destruction of fragile coral reefs destroy ocean biodiversity Deforestation is taking a staggering toll, particularly in the tropics where the most global biodiversity is at risk The shinking rainforest cover of the Congo and Amazon river basins and such place as Borneo and Madagascar have a wealth of species per hectare existing nowhere else As those precious hectares are drowned or turned into arid pasture and cropland, such species disappear forever

Telecommunicating is a form of computer communication between employees’ homes and offices For employees whose jobs involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports, the location of the computer is of no consequence If the machine can communicate over telephone lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office computer from a distant site and transmit the material to their employers A recent survey in USA Today estimates that there are approximately 8.7 million telecommuters Although the numbers are rising annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant as predicted when Business Week published “The Portable Executive”
as its cover story a few years ago.
Why hasn't telecommuting become more popular? Clearly, change simply takes time But in addition, there has been active resistance on the part of many managers These executives claim that supervising the telecommuters in a large work force scattered across the country would be too difficult,
or, at least, systems for managing them are not yet developed, thereby complicating the manager's
responsibilities.
It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are often reluctant to accept the opportunity Most people feel that they need regular interaction with a group, and many are concerned that they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are not more visible
Trang 18in the office setting Some people feel that even when a space in their homes is set aside as a work area, they never really get away from the office.
Question 31: What is the main idea of the passage?
A Telecommuting and reasons why it’s not really popular

Unlike these fish, which are actually extinct, the coelacanth is a type of fish that was believed to be extinct However, an unexpected twentieth-century rediscovery of living coelacanths has brought about a reassessment of the status of this prehistoric sea creature that was believed to have long since disappeared from the Earth
From fossil remains of the coelacanth, palaeontologists have determined that the
coelacanth was in existence around 350 million years ago, during the Palaeozoic Era, more than 100 million years before the first dinosaurs arrived on Earth The most recent fossilized coelacanths date from around 70 million years ago, near the end of the Mesozoic and near the end of the age of dinosaurs Because no fossilized remnants of coelacanths from the last 70 million years have been found, the coelacanth was believed to have died out around the same time as the dinosaurs The prehistoric coelacanth studied by palaeontologists had distinctive characteristics that differentiated it from other fish It was named for its hollow spine and was known to have been powerful carnivores because of its many sharp teeth and a special joint in
the skull that allowed the ferocious teeth to move in coordination with the lower jaw It also
had a pair of fins with unusual bony and muscular development that allowed the coelacanth to
Trang 19dart around the ocean floor These fins also enable the coelacanth to search out prey trying to hide on the ocean bottom
In 1983, a living specimen of the coelacanth was discovered in the catch of a fishing boat off the coast of South Africa, and since then numerous other examples of the coelacanth have been found in the waters of the Indian Ocean This modern version of the coelacanth is not exactly the same as its prehistoric cousin Today’s coelacanth is larger than its prehistoric relative, measuring up to six feet in length and weigh up to 150 pounds However, the modern version of the coelacanth still possesses the characteristic hollow spine and distinctive fins with their unusual bony and muscular structure.

Some doctors think that you should drink a glass of water each morning You should drink this water first thing, before doing anything else The temperature of the water should
be similar to body temperature; neither too hot nor too cold
Why should you drink this water? Water helps your body in many ways It helps clean out
your kidneys It prepares your stomach for digestion Water can also help your intestines
work better After drinking water, the intestines can more easily take out nutrients from our food Water also helps us go to the bathroom more easily.
Scientists suggest that people take in 1,600 milliliters of water each day But don’t drink all of that water in one sitting If you do, your kidneys will have to work much harder to
eliminate it It’s better to drink some in the morning and some in the afternoon Some people
think it’s better to drink between meals and not during meals They think water dilutes the juices produced in our stomachs This can interfere with normal digestion
Are you drinking enough water every day? Check the color of your urine If it is light yellow, you are probably drinking enough If your urine is very dark yellow, you probably need to drink more water A little more water each day could make you much healthier.

Trang 36Carnegie Hall, the famous concert hall in New York City, has again undergone a restoration While this is not the first, it is certainly the most extensive in the building’s history As a result of this new restoration, Carnegie Hall once again has the quality of sound
that it had when it was first built Carnegie Hall owes its existence to Andrew Carnegie, the
wealthy owner of a steel company in the late 1800s The hall was finished in 1891 and quickly gained a reputation as an excellent performing arts hall where accomplished musicians gained fame Despite its reputation, however, the concert hall suffered from several
detrimental renovations over the years During the Great Depression, when fewer people
could afford to attend performances, the directors sold part of the building to commercial businesses As a result, a coffee shop was opened in one corner of the building, for which the builders replaced the brick and terra cotta walls with windowpanes A renovation in 1946 seriously damaged the acoustical quality of the hall when the makers of the film Carnegie Hall cut a gaping hole in the dome of the ceiling to allow for lights and air vents The hole was later covered with short curtains and a fake ceiling but the hall never sounded the same afterwards
In 1960, the violinist Isaac Stern became involved in restoring the hall after a group of
real estate developers unveiled plans to demolish Carnegie Hall and build a high-rise office
building on the site
This threat spurred Stern to rally public support for Carnegie Hall and encourage the City
of New York to buy the property The movement was successful, and the concert hall is now owned by the city In the current restoration, builders tested each new material for its sound qualities, and they replaced the hole in the ceiling with a dome The builders also restored the outer walls to their original appearance and closed the coffee shop Carnegie has never sounded better, and its prospects for the future have never looked more promising
