Education is not an end, but mean to an end In other

words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of

educating them Our purpose is to fit them for life In some

modern countries it has for some time be fashionable to think

that by free education for all- weather rich or poor, clever or

stupid- one can solve all the problems of society and build a

perfectly nation But we can already see that free education for

all is not enough; we find in such countries a larger number

people with university degree; they refuse doing what they

think “low” work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought

being dirty and shameful in such countries But we have only to

thought moment to understand that the work of a completely

uneducated farmer is far important than that of a professor; we

can live without education but we die when we have no food If

no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our

house, we should get terrible diseases in our towns…

practice law in Hartford Later, when he turned to teaching, he discovered how inadequate the available

schoolbooks were for the children of a new and independent nation

to other languages, and seven more years to the writing itself Published in two volumes in 1828, An

American Dictionary of the English Language has become the recognized authority for usage in the

United States Webster’s purpose in writing it was to demonstrate that the American language was developing distinct meanings, pronunciations, and spellings from those of British English He is responsible for advancing simplified spelling

forms: develop instead of the British form develope; theater and center instead of theatre and centre;

color and honor instead of colour and honour.
