A BECAUSE AND BECAUSE OF.
1 ‘BECAUSE’ – được dùng trước một mệnh đề (clause = S + V + O).
Ví dụ: - she arrived at work late because the traffic was bad.
- we didn’t go on a picnic because it was raining
- Because the prices were high, few people ate at that restaurant
2 ‘ BECAUSE OF” – Được dùng trước một danh từ hoặc một cụm từ.
Ví dụ: - She arrived at the office late because of the bad traffic.
- We didn’t go on a picnic because of the rain
- Because of the high prices, few people ate at that restaurant
B ALTHOUGH AND IN SPITE OF.
1 ‘ALTHOUGH’ – Được dùng trước một mệnh đề (clause = S + V + O).
Ví dụ: - He went swimming although the weather was bad.
- Although she took a taxi, she was late for the interview
2 ‘ IN SPITE OF’ – Được dùng trước một danh từ hoặc một danh động từ (Ving).
Ví dụ: - He went swimming in spite of the bad weather.
- In spite of taking a taxi, she was late for the interview
NOTICE:
‘THOUGH’ và ‘EVEN THOUGH’ có thể thay thế cho ‘ALTHOUGH’
‘ DESPITE’ có thể dùng thay thế cho ‘IN SPITE OF’
Ví dụ: - Even though it rained heavily, Tom insisted on going out for a walk.
- Despite the heavy rain, Tom insisted on going out for a walk
- They didn’t hurry even though they were late
- They didn’t hurry despite being late
