Use “in spite of” before a noun phrase or the –ing form of a verb:

In spite of being foggy the plane took off

Use “although” with a clause ( subject+ verb):

Although it was foggy, the plane took off

Although he was clever, he failed the exam because he hadn´t studied hard enough
