This book teaches you those techniques for the IELTS Writing Task 1 (Academic)
Test.
Trang 7
Both Task 1 and Task 2 are rated based on four criteria: Task Achievement,Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range andAccuracy
Trang 9The advisable amount of time to accomplish this task is 20 minutes
Trang 11Why is it important to analyse the data?
Before constructing your essay, it is a prerequisite to go over the data, as it is thebest way to start with the task itself Failing to do so would cause incoherenceand too much delay during the maximum of 20 minutes intended for you in thispart of the exam You should also carefully understand everything you see on theexam paper—from the instructions to the details of the given figure
For maps and diagrams, always start with the bigger or general picture, or findthe starting point first and follow the whole process These are the exact data to
be interpreted
Study how these data are presented, and take note of every pattern involved
Finally, try to be discriminating as to which sets of information are mostsignificant You don’t have to pay attention to those that do not show muchdistinction Follow the aforementioned steps as you take a look at a certainfigure
Trang 12
Based on the given figures, look for significant data such as the biggest orsmallest number (for tables), starting point (for diagrams), longest or shortest bar(for charts), and highest or lowest point (for graphs)
Notice how these data are presented in terms of patterns and trends Is there adecreasing or increasing movement of items (for tables)? What does the arrowsuggest? Are there two or more arrows (for diagrams)? How are the pointsmoving? Are they moving up or down, or are they fluctuating (for charts andgraphs)?
Activities
1 Pay attention to the heading or question of each figure and underline itskeywords
Figure 1 The Line Graph
The graph below shows global energy demand, measured in millions of tonnes oil equivalent, over a period of six decades.
Trang 13
Response to Activity B
The given items along the vertical axis represent amounts of energy required orallocated for each year shown in the horizontal axis Hence, their range ofmeasurement has an upward direction, while the chronological order is to theright
Response to Activity C
If you look at the six coloured lines found in the graph, it’s very obvious that anincreasing trend is common among them So, through time, the demand of
Trang 14
On the vertical axis is the number of households vulnerable to fuel poverty Thegiven range is up to 4.5 million households although the actual highest numberassociated with the data is only 4 million Hence, there is an interval of 500,000
Trang 15or half a million On the horizontal axis is the chronological presentation ofyears associated with fuel poverty in England after economic effects.
Response to Activity C
The first noticeable trend is the gradual decrease in number as projected by thevertical bars from 1996 to 2003—steadily through 2004 Then, in the twosucceeding years, there is a gradual increase in number
Figure 3 The Pie Chart
The pie chart below illustrates how the total amount of global emissions of carbon dioxide is shared by different nations in the year 2003.
Trang 17They keywords and phrases above mean that there are two separate pie charts. The first one is for the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions in a givencountry, and the second one demonstrates how certain components contribute tothe total amount of one of the four sectors given.
Figure 5 The Combination of Table and Line Graph
The table and the graph below, with the four contributing entities, illustrate the projected amounts of carbon emissions in the UK from 1990 to 2050 and
Trang 19projected amounts of carbon emissions in the UK from 1990 to 2050 and demonstrate the general trend respectively.
For the underlined phrases, there is a connection between the two given figures. The first one presents the total amount of carbon emissions in the UK shared bythe given entities This data is projected over the period shown, and thecorresponding trend is demonstrated in the next figure
Response to Activity C
The figure next to the table is a line graph It shows the general trend of the datapresented It is then obviously an increasing one since the line is mainly in theupward direction Although it does not specify the four major contributingsectors to the total amount of carbon emissions in the UK, the total amount foreach decade is still shown in a particular order ranging up to 200 million tonnes(the maximum) It can be clearly seen that the highest amount projected is in theyear 2050, at 162.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide
Trang 20The underlined phrases above are what the table shows There are four sectorsthat contribute to the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK over aperiod.
Response to Activity B
This is exactly the same table used in the previous lesson; so is the answer forthis part
Response to Activity C
There is an increasing trend of items in this figure, as what the line graph in theprevious lesson demonstrated
Figure 7 The Diagram
Trang 21The diagram below shows that the UK’s energy system, when the use of fossil fuels to
generate electricity is added to their uses in transport and providing heat, is reliant on fossil fuels.
The underlined words and phrases above are the major elements of the diagram. They are presented in a systematic way in order to be read and understood easilyand clearly
Trang 23Response to Activity B
The arrows serve as your guide in looking at the entire cycle Some directions, like upward, show where the carbon should be going Since the cycle is alreadynamed in the diagram, it is then very easy to connect the processes
Response to Activity C
A process diagram doesn’t have any trend at all
Trang 24Why is there a need to choose the points to be included in the essay?
Speaking of coherence, the data to be written down should be well chosen, andthe decision is yours only to make Each of us has distinct ways of writing Italso means that we have different styles in expressing our thoughts What isimportant in Writing task 1 is that you give what is required Answer the taskand support it with appropriate details As for the style, discover and master yourown
How are the major and minor details identified?
For the major or general details, look into the topic question or heading—if thereare any—first As learned in lesson 1, the keywords will give you the mainpoints to consider Confirm if these are really the major details by referring tothe chart, graph, table, diagram, or map The minor ones either describe orsupport the major details
Trang 28The two pie charts below present the UK’s total amount of carbon dioxide emissions, expressed in millions of tonnes, in 2004 and the percentages of the four components of residential carbon dioxide emission in the previous year.
Trang 29
Answer
In the first chart, there are 4 sectors that contribute to the total amount of carbondioxide emissions in the UK in 2004
The second chart on the right-hand side shows the four components of one of thesectors mentioned above, namely the residential sector This is a projection ofdata in the year earlier
Trang 30the projected amounts of carbon emissions in the UK from 1990 to 2050 and show the general trend respectively.
Answer
Trang 31
In the table, the first columns show the projected period of carbon dioxideemissions in the UK.
The next four columns are the respective amounts of carbon emissions for thefour sectors, namely ‘residential’, ‘transport’, ‘industry’, and ‘services’ over thegiven period
The last column contains the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions for eachdecade from the four sectors combined
The ‘residential sector’ has the greatest emission in 2050 This period also hasthe greatest amount for ‘services’ along with the whole decade starting 1990—the same time when ‘industry’ contributes the most For ‘transport’, the greatestemission can be seen in the decade from year 2010
Next to the table is the line graph which compares the total amounts of carbondioxide emissions for every five years with the same period (1990–2050)
On the vertical axis, the measurement in millions of tonnes is presented with aninterval of 20, and the highest in the scale is 200
On the horizontal axis, the chronological scale is presented with an interval of 5years–2050 being the final year
The smallest amount of emissions can be seen in 2010, whereas the greatest is in2050
Trang 32The ‘residential sector’ has the greatest emission in 2050 This period also hasthe greatest amount for ‘services’ along with the whole decade starting 1990—the same time when ‘industry’ contributes the most For ‘transport’, the greatestemission can be seen in the decade from year 2010
Set 7
The diagram below shows that the UK’s energy system, when the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity is added to their uses in transport and providing heat, is reliant on fossil fuels.
Trang 33
Answer
The five items in the rectangular boxes on the left-hand side are the sources ofenergy
Except for oil, the energy sources on the left-hand side may be converted into
‘electricity’, and for the UK’s energy system, they have their own contributionsfor the electric supply as indicated by their corresponding percentages
Trang 35a by product, being released.
Trang 36What are the advantages of knowing how to structure the essay for Writing task 1?
First of all, a well-structured essay shows a clear presentation of thoughts orideas It is also more convenient to write down your thoughts or ideas if youknow what appropriately to write and to avoid based on your planned structure
For readers, it should always be easy to perceive the ideas the writer wants toconvey
How is a task 1 essay structured?
You need to follow or develop a format of your own Then pay attention to themajor parts first For example, in the introduction, you just have to paraphrasethe question Then summarise the major or general points shown by the graph, chart, table, diagram, or map You also have the option to have this as the lastparagraph of your essay since you don’t have to write a conclusion anymore. Finally, it is a wise idea to have two more paragraphs to describe or make areport on the details Just make sure you always focus on the significant ones
What are some related points to consider in structuring the essay?
Unlike the opinion and other types, your Writing task 1 essay should not state
Trang 38I will write about the type or types of fuel with the highest and the lowestdemand over the given period Then I’ll mention the general trend that there is asteady increase of demand throughout the given period
Paragraphs 3 and 4
I will describe each year on the horizontal axis in terms of whether the demandfor energy, by fuel, is remarkably high or low It would also be possible to justmention which fuel or fuels has the highest and the lowest demand for each year
Trang 39
Here, I will mention which year has the greatest and lowest number ofvulnerable households in fuel poverty Next, I will state the gradual decrease ofvalues from 1996 to 2004
Paragraphs 3 and 4
The years on the horizontal axis are presented in an interval of two, so I will talkabout each based on what is very noticeable as far as the data on the vertical axisare concerned
Set 3
The pie chart below illustrates how the total amount of global emissions of carbon dioxide are shared by different nations in the year 2003.
Trang 40The two pie charts below present the UK’s total amount of carbon dioxide emissions, expressed in million tonnes, in 2004 and the percentages of the four components of residential carbon dioxide emission in the previous year
Trang 42(in millions of tonnes) The same will be true for the four components of
‘residential’ sector Since, there is no trend and the two charts can’t be compared,I’ll just mention that the second chart is a demonstration of what the components
of each sector would be in terms of their proportions to the total amount ofcarbon dioxide emissions
Set 5
The table and the graph below, with the four contributing entities, illustrate the projected amounts of carbon emissions in the UK from 1990 to 2050 and show the general trend for every five years respectively.
