VIII Read the following passage extracted from Expert on Cambridge IELTS Reading 1 and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer for each of the questions
Today, I'd like to begin a discussion on the problem of the heating up of the earth First, we'll touch on the relationship between fluorocarbons and the ozone layer You probably remember that the ozone layer is the
protective shield around the earth It is important to all life, because it filters out harmful ultraviolet light
from the sun Ozone itself, a form of oxygen, is regularly made by the action of the sun in the upper atmosphere It is also regularly destroyed by natural chemical processes
The problem now is that too much of the ozone layer is being destroyed Scientists suspect that certain
chemicals, such as fluorocarbons, are contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer And how do we use
fluorocarbons? The most common uses are in spray cans and cooling systems The chemical pollution from these fluorocarbons can account for some of the ozone losses that have been reported There are, however,
Trang 3new studies linking the sun itself to the depletion of the ozone layer We'll go into that new study more next time
Câu 27 What will the speaker probably discuss next?
A. How to make air conditioners with fluorocarbons B The make-up of the ozone layer
C Harmful effects of ultraviolet light D The sun as a cause of ozone layer depletion
Câu 28 What is the most important purpose of the ozone layer?
C.Destroying chemicals D Protecting the earth
Câu 29 What does the word "depletion" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A departure B deployment C reduction D. deletion
Câu 30 The speaker's main topic is
A the use of spray cans B air-conditioning systems
C fluorocarbons and the ozone layer D ultraviolet light
Câu 31 What is the ozone layer made of?
A Fluorocarbons B. Ultraviolet light C Oxygen D Shields
Câu 32 Who is the most likely speaker?
Câu 33. What does the word "filters out" in paragraph 1 probably mean?

XI. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer for each of the questions
Just two months after the flight of Apollo 11 astronauts made their historic landing on the surface of the
Moon This momentous trip for humanity also provided scientists with an abundance of material for study;
from rock and soil samples brought back from the Moon, scientists have been able to determine much about the composition of the Moon as well as to draw inferences about the development of the Moon from its composition
The Moon soil that came back on Apollo 11 contains small bits of rock and glass which were probably ground from larger rocks when meteors impacted with the surface of the Moon The bits of glass are
Trang 4spherical in shape and constitute approximately half of the Moon soil Scientists found no trace of animal or plant life in this soil
In addition to the Moon soil, astronauts gathered two basic types of rocks from the surface of the Moon: basalt and breccia Basalt is a cooled and hardened volcanic lava common to the Earth Since basalt is
formed under extremely high temperatures, the presence of this type of rock is an indication that the
temperature of the Moon was once extremely hot Breccia, the other kind of rock brought back by the
astronauts, was formed during the impact of falling objects on the surface of the Moon This second type of rock consists of small pieces of rock compressed together by the force of impact Gases such as hydrogen and helium were found in some of the rocks, and scientists believe that these gases were carried to the moon
by the solar wind, the streams of gases that are constantly emitted by the Sun
Câu 41 According to the passage, breccia was formed _
A from the interaction of helium and hydrogen B when objects struck the Moon
C from volcanic lava D when streams of gases hit the surface of the Moon Câu 42 The author's purpose in this passage is to
A describe some rock and soil samples
B demonstrate the difference between basalt and breccia
C propose a new theory about the creation of the Moon
D explain some of the things learned from space flights
Câu 43 What is the subject of this passage?
A Soil on the Moon B Basalt and breccia
C What the Moon is made of D The Apollo astronauts
Câu 44 Which of the following was NOT brought back to the Earth by the astronauts?
Câu 45 The paragraph preceding the passage most likely discusses
A the inception of the Apollo space program B a different space ship
C astronaut training D previous Moon landings
Câu 46 It is implied in the passage that scientists believe that the gases found in the Moon rocks _
A traveled from the Moon to the Sun B were not originally from the Moon
C were created inside the rocks D caused the Moon's temperature to rise
Câu 47 According to the passage, what does Moon soil consist of?
A tiny pieces of stones and glass B large chunks of volcanic lava
C hydrogen and helium D streams of gases
Câu 48 An "abundance" in the passage means
A a large amount B an insignificant C a wealthy bunch D a disorderly
XII. Mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the sentence that best combines each pair of sentences in the following questions

A Hadn't my father encouraged me in my choice of career, I would become a chef now
B If my father hadn't been courageous, I would never have become a chef now
C If it hadn't been for my father's encouragement, I wouldn't become a chef now
D It was my father who encouraged me to become a chef otherwise I had chosen another career
Câu 50 Maria was worried about the killer Her husband was only worried about the car
A Maria was so worried about the killer that her husband was only worried about the car

The most common uses are in spray cans and cooling systems The chemical pollution from these fluorocarbons can account for some of the ozone losses that have been reported There are, however,
Trang 15new studies linking the sun itself to the depletion of the ozone layer We'll go into that new study more next time
Câu 27 What will the speaker probably discuss next?

Just two months after the flight of Apollo 11 astronauts made their historic landing on the surface of the
Moon This momentous trip for humanity also provided scientists with an abundance of material for study;
from rock and soil samples brought back from the Moon, scientists have been able to determine much about the composition of the Moon as well as to draw inferences about the development of the Moon from its composition
The Moon soil that came back on Apollo 11 contains small bits of rock and glass which were probably ground from larger rocks when meteors impacted with the surface of the Moon The bits of glass are
