I Aims:

- Pronounce the words and sentences containing these clusters correctly

- Use grammar

Conjunctions: both….and, not only …… but also, either …… or , neither … nor CLEFT sentences in the passive

Adverbial focus

Lexical items:

- Words and phrases related to language focus

Structure:

- Use these structures to solve communicative tasks

II Method: Integrated, mainly communication.

Teaching aids: Textbook, sub-board, lesson plan, cassette tape.

III Procedures:

Warm-up

* Introduce the new lesson:

Pronunciation : / ts / - / dz / - / t∫ t / and / dʒd /

Grammar: both….and, not only …… but also,

either …… or , neither … nor

cleft sentences in the passive

- Copy down

- Listen and prepare

Pronunciation:

- Introduce the sounds / ts / - / dz / - / t∫ t / and /

dʒd / then asks Ss to repeat them

* Listen and repeat.

- Guides and read example once or twine

- Explains how to produce them

E.g: When producing / ts /, Ss should produce / t /

first and then quickly switch to / s /, and so on

- Turns on the tape ( or read) and ask Ss to repeat

- Asks Ss to practice the words have the sounds in

each column out loud in chorus for a few more

times

- Call some Ss to read the sounds and words in front

of the class

- Listen and read in chorus

- Listen and practice the words have the sounds

- Listen and read silently

- Underline the words containing the target sounds

Grammar:

CLEFT sentences in the passive

- Explains Ss how to use:

Structures: It + be + subject + that + past participle

Example:

Active: My father gave me a lot of toys

Passive: It was I that was given a lot of toys

Active: He described his home town in his novel

Passive: ………

Both….and, not only …… but also, either … or

, neither … nor

1) Both….and

a) Both + noun + and + noun

Example: She plays both tennis and badminton

b) Both + verb + and + verb

Example: He both sings and dances

c) Both + adj + and + adj

Example: She is both beautiful and intelligent

d) Both + adverbial phrase + and + adverbial

phrase.

Example: We go to school both in the morning and

in the afternoon

2) Not only …… but also

Example:

There are problems not only with teachers but also

with students themselves

Either … or

Example:

Well, I think she’s either Russian or Chinese

Active: My husband waters the flowers every day

Passive: It is the flowers that are watered

by my husband every day

Active: They celebrated their wedding last week

Passive: It was their wedding that was celebrated last week

Exercise 1:

*Introduce:

- Asks Ss to combine the sentences using both

…and either … or, neither … nor.

- Gives Ss some new words and write them on the

board then explain the meaning

- Guides Ss to make some strategies

- Asks Ss to read carefully sentences

- Asks Ss to work individually and then discuss the

following pairs

Example:

Tom was late So was Ann

- Both Tom and Ann was late.

She didn’t write and she didn’t phone

She neither wrote nor she phoned

- Calls on Ss to answer and practice the sentences in

front of the class

Exercise 1:

- Combine the sentences using both
